Subnautica dev fired over 'insensitive tweets'

Professionals of the world... STOP USING TWITTER. That platform has become so toxic and a parody of it's former self. Time to let it die...

Here is a supposedly controversial post, PDP said "nigger" so what??, does that make him racist? or you were offended just because he used the word??.
Why is the word in itself bad?? it is the context and the person ideas and morality that makes a person racist, we do not know he is, we know nothing we just presume with our huge egos like we know better, and you can apply this to almost everything.
I have friends that are black, i have trans people who are my friends, i joke a lot with it, about it, does that make me a recist?? ignorant?? no it does not.
Neither does a man saying nigger make him racist, nor does a man needs to be fired because hu used some of his dark humor or because he joked on the internet.

Sometime I really start to think that the world is crazy, everyone seems spoiled and cries for everything, and everything is a problem and everything needs to be fixed.
Why all the protection against everything, why all the fuking egos inflate so much, breath people, if you want to go nuts abut things go about things that matter.
Here's some context:
Pewdiepie was playing against a hard to kill adversary and, enervated, called him "what a fucking nigger".
He couldn't know if that player was black. He used the word as a slur. Black person = bad.
There's your fucking context.

I get it, but i still don´t think an insult or word can describe a person or how they act in real life, i very sure every person did something like that at one point in they´re lives, and they are not more racist because of it.

Your logic applies if the person in question, keeps repeating insults and racist acts against certain people, besides that what else do people have on him.
It is pretty easy to judge someone´s life just by looking at a video, but life is not a video

If people say racist slurs, they're an asshole, full stop. I've found it very easy to not say racist slurs throughout my adult life, like super easy. I can understand if he's young and has some growing up to do, but this grown man is 28 years old. We need to expect better from people. This whole "maan it was in the heat of the moment" thing is not a defense, it almost makes it worse that you automatically call people racial slurs when you get mad. The whole "well, I know he said something racist, but you can't prove he's a racist, he has black friends", I'm tired of it. I don't care what's in your heart, I care what you put out into the world, and what he put out was hatred.

You are totally right, but it happened once, how many years has he been on youtube?
If he were to be saying racial splurs all the time, don´t you think it would happen more?and besides, just because he did something wrong, does it mean he deserves all the hate he gets??
People always criticize the bad but never remember the good, It is almost hypocrisy, you can insult and make a guy get fired for saying a slur, but you accept your president and politicians to do 10x as worse as him.

If you're using racist insults, you're more racist for it.

Can you really judge so easily someone??
Things are never that simple, sometimes things are black or white, where is the gray line?? not saying you are wrong, but can´t you see that lately everyone judges without facts or understanding anything, if this was a normal man, he would have lost his job (like the developer did) and why, because of something so stupid. Why are you all so extreme.
Were you so bullied as a child? why so angry? why always shot first and think later?

I'm not angry. Don't group me with Twitter activists.
It's not extreme to call the man's faux-pas racist. I'm not saying he's got a white hood in his closet, mind you. I'm saying he didn't think enough about the meaning of words. This negligence resulted in him being racist. You can not only be racist for having bad thoughts, you can also be racist for not thinking.

It was not my intention to group you with the extremists, sorry.
Just saying that this might be more stupidity than racism, and people need to get that and not linch the guy, we were all in one point of our lives stupid with something
Or yes criticize, but the result is to extreme, he did not deserve that much backlash, not saying you, but people just seem like starved dogs, waiting to kill at every step

We all know the internet can be rather shit.
He surely deserved backlash, but not all the backlash he got. I can't quantify how much exactly, only say it shouldn't have dropped below a certain quality it most certainly has.

The incident being stupid doesn't make it not racist. It's both. It's stupid racism.
Would it be okay for a company to fire someone for that? Of course.
Would it be okay for a company to not fire for that? I guess, but they'd need to do some explaining.

Don't make it bad for business to have you on board, At end this business wants to sell to everyone regardless of political affiliation.

I feel you mixed the answers up? Right?

In the context of how he said it, it was bad.

His reviveable team mate was killed in PUBG and he called out the player as a "fucking nigger". It was said in an entirely negative and non joking manner. And as yet, we aren't so far removed from history that the word has lost it's demeaning nature.

It was said during a public live stream, it's pretty "real life" so to speak.

I get what you're saying and can tell you're generally playing devils advocate, but there isn't much leeway in this case.

p.s I'm not saying he is a white supremacist or a nazi or what ever, but there is a definite level of prejudice based on race.

Agreed, good job.

I keep hearing that reactions like that come from "vocal minority", which, if true, means there would be no real effect on business.

Thanks for the thoughtful response, good to see someone not typing angry for a change, all i was defending is that you can not judge a person for a live stream, you nee more than that, he deserved backlash, but not what he got.

in these days it is very easy to destroy a life, and most people sometimes we included don´t think about the effect on the person´s life or if he deserved it

It would be okay to not fire him too, You are exaggerating, he needed to apologize but no, never lose his job over something so stupid.

Something seemingly just stupid to you, something hateful and demeaning to a lot of people. A company is not under any obligation to keep someone who says stuff like this. Someone who uses hate speech to demean a portion of their customers. Again, it is very easy to not say racial slurs.

Almost every company nowadays has a social media clause in their contracts. This dude was clearly violating that, you can violate these kind of things with much more innocent tweets than this guy was posting.

The guy is a moron.

The question is did a small indy studio had these? IF so? then yes he was stupid if not I think he did not deserve to be fired.

Almost everybody has these, regardless of the line of work. An indie game studio DEFINITELY has these. This has been common for a very long time.

Even in a fantasy world where they didn't, he still deserved to be fired. If you're tweeting out toxic bullshit from a platform where you associate with your company, it's in their best interest to terminate you.

In many cases, it's just people punishing themselves. How many people have to ruin themselves on social media before everyone else learns? I am against someone else ruining you on social media but if you ruin yourself on social media....well....I guess that's on you.

Let me be clearer. It doesn't matter which side you choose, if you give your opinion on a controversial topic on social media (where your real name is attached) then you brought it on yourself.
