Suicide Squad by Rocksteady has a Battle Pass

RockSteady is probably one of the only studios out there that can figure out this genre design.

They essentially invented a combat system based on rhythm which didn't exist prior and now it's extensively imitated by other action games.

But then again some of the heads leaving is ominous.

The Same parent company of Rocksteady made another developer stick loot boxes in Middle earth shadow of Mordor. Sucks when business people and economists need to meddle with what should be an entertainment product.

"alright guys, how do we tell people that our game is going to be GaaS? we don't want a scathing reception"

"just allow a "leak" two month before the launch, to absorb the shock.. people eventually will accept that by the launch time"

This is exactly what I think happened ... These type of "leaks" don't happen randomly

Well that just sqaushed any interest I had. Maybe when it's in the sales for a £10 I'll bite.

I can't stop laughing, is this from something specific?

Thank you 😊. I'm glad someone said it.

Do people really think Rocksteady wanted to put GAAS in Suicide Squad? I'd also go as far as say that SS is near the bottom of the totem pole in terms of games they wanted to make. 🤦‍♂️
yep. the developer may retain the name, but i'm thinking this isn't really the same studio that made the arkham trilogy. different time, different circumstances. we're now 8 years on. that rocksteady's gone...

8 fucking years and this is what they're giving us.Another gaas garbage waiting to implode on itself.

8 years....They made the entirety of the Batman Arkham trilogy in less than that. This industry is a goddamn joke!

8 years for this shit. Even if it's "just cosmetic", we already know that they were at least aiming for a full blown GaaS before the game was announced officially. Chances are they saw Avengers, and most other non-Destiny live "service" game flops and reversed course. Just like with Gotham Knights. That basis can't be removed from the game design that many years into development.

What a joke WB Games has become. Their studios take the vast majority of a decade to put out games and 2 out of 3 recent ones are/will be outright failures. Hogwarts Legacy looks good enough and will do well, but DC games are fucked. There's a lot riding on that Wonder Woman game. And Monolith's going to reach 6 years with no output this August.

Can someone explain to me how is this a bad thing?

Like, do we know it will affect game design and Dev's will deploy predatory practices?

Coop gameplay looked sick in last video. Definitely will play at some point.

Yeah you could be right unfortunately. And both co-founders leaving before doesn't help either.

I think that these hot takes are correct, sadly. This single screenshot of a game still in development that nobody has seen running or knows much about is enough to warrant closing the studio and putting all the employees out on the street.

Sorry Rocksteady, your well respected legacy has now been destroyed.

It was already known this would be a GaaS when they said it as mp-focused, so why the surprise over a battle pass? Everyone and their dog in the AAA space is doing it or some form of it.

Could be interesting, I will trust Rocksteady and will hold judgment for later. As for the six currencies, couldn't they be something like resources that you collect to unlock stuff in game?

I had a look at glassdoor to see what current or ex employees have said at Rocksteady.

This one was quite interesting:

"The company is exceedingly poor at recognizing and promoting talent. The company has terrible turnover as a result of bad morale because of how badly managed the project is. The design direction is chaotic, murky, obtuse and above all doesn't care about opinions from anyone outside of the "annointed few" who founded the studio or have been there a while and continue to spout off about their design philosophy without realizing the games industry has moved on in the 6+ years since the shipped a full product. It's like watching an indie developer learn GaaS and making every single mistake possible along the way."

Multiplatform game from beloved developer using a bunch of characters nobody cares about who were recently featured in a movie nobody cared about?
Vs
Arkane game (known for fantastic gameplay) with vampires, alot of people still thinking its a Left4Dead-esc game and it's also exclusive to the Xbox and PC, plus ......everyones favorite Game Pass.

Gee.....I wonder.

Fixed that for you.

Suicide Squad's already mired in shit over the Battle Pass/GaaS reveal. Arkane has an amazing pedigree that crushes Rocksteady, and their game's on Game Pass.

Suicide Square will be in the bargain bin, and almost guaranteed to be the lesser quality game.

Thats certainly a take.

The Arkham games were among some of the best games I've ever played..
I just cannot even bring myself to care about this or knights.

I replayed arkham knight few weeks ago, it was more impressive than 99% games released since then. I feel dumb for doubting rocksteady, but i know better than to trust a well established game studio. Sad to think that they might have the same downfall as Bioware, Blizzard, DICE and Crystal Dynamics.
I hope its good and that they wont join the ranks of Bioware and CD.

Are you kidding?

If a game has a bp and mtx, the game is designed around the bp and mtx.

Assassin's Creed games have this stuff.

Didn't felt Odeyssey was designed around this stuff.

People are jumping to conclusions. It all depends on how it's implemented.

I told this game looks like a live service to which so many gaf members replied nooooope.

But its rocksteady. Its gonna be amazing.

Destiny 2 isn't.

Never will understand the kneejerk hate a GaaS game gets. If it is good, what does it matter that they want you to keep playing?

. . .honestly the most shocking thing from that photo for me is that this is going to have full crossplay (not sure if that was already known; probably was).

Odyssey had microtransactions and DLC but it didn't have a Battle Pass. (Also IMO the progression in Odyssey was rather slow and they had annoying level gating which I DO think was mainly because of their Xp boost DLC)
Battle passes are designed around tedious grind and if they are intending to make money from it you already know that tedious grind will be a core part of the experience.

Also it's a $70 dollars game, IMO cool cosmetic options should be included in the price, like in good superhero games:

I've never agreed with this notion that it's ok for full priced games to sell cosmetics because "they don't affect gameplay". To me unlocking new suits in Spiderman was a ton of fun.

I miss the days where everything was in the game at launch, waiting to be unlocked. So many characters, costumes, secrets, etc.

Now it's just:
  • Push out a game in beta, call it launch ready
  • Patch game after launch so it is actually complete and fully functional (this may take up to 1 year)
  • Majority of characters, costumes, etc. come after launch as paid content
  • Make sure battle/season passes are available to purchase day 1, even if the content in them hasn't been finalized
  • Bonus: require online connection, even for single-player modes
It's no wonder I just keep replaying Dark Souls or Elden Ring; modern gaming doesn't give much to be excited about anymore.

Destiny 2 isn't.
Destiny def is. You cannot catch up in Destiny if u want to finish the battlepass. I haven't finished the Beyond Light or Witch Queen campaigns because of this. Unless u play the game daily ur not going to be able to enjoy all of Destiny's content AND finish the battle pass at the same time. U gotta pick one or the other

This is definitely not the case with Destiny as it's BP is one of the most easiest one.

Catching up in destiny is just better gun perks and xp grind, the latter contributes automatically to your BP. Nothing in BP makes you better at the game or helps you other than cosmetics.

I play 4-8 hours on Saturdays/Sundays only and just normal bounties are enough to reach 200BP.

And the "campaigns" are short shit content with barely 8 missions. Name of the game is have fun and always have done bounties active for that content.

are u just going to ignore strikes, seasonal activities, dungeons, raids, exotic quests, other secret quests etc. There is a fck ton of content. Half of it isn't going to help u rank up the battle pass. As the best way to rank up are weekly quests and bounties

Yes and every of those activities have bounties linked to them. Are you only doing end game content all the time ?

8x4 bounties in a week and 2 Challenges per week should be enough to get 100 in 3 months.

I wonder if the former Rocksteady execs saw what was coming on the horizon and decided to bounce to take their vision elsewhere.

GAAS for something like this isn't gonna end well. Look at what happened with The Avengers. Grind after grind after grind.
