Suikoden II |OT| The Affordable 108

Beautiful OT Ultros! Nicely done! :D

This game man, so much memories...

One of the first RPG I've played. I was interested in this game back then long time ago when I went to gamestore to buy game. Suikoden II's cover got me interested because I saw the circlet on Riou's head, back then I thought this was some kind of Journey to the West adaptation game. I thought Riou was like Sun WuKong lol. After went back and playing it, it wasn't what I expected! But it was better than what I was expecting. The opening left a deep impression on me, the
jumping off the cliff
scene. I never seen anything before like that in game, it's like one of those Chinese Wuxia drama I always watched about brotherhood and chivalry. And then plays "Reminiscence", holy crap goosebump all over my body, you could never get this melody out of your head. I think I played it until I had to buy some floor. The next day I talked to my friend about this game, turns out they had played it and told me to play Suikoden, so he borrowed me the first Suikoden game and I never realized I was pretty OCD back then so I stopped playing Suikoden II and starting to play Suikoden I instead.

Playing Suikoden I after seeing Suikoden II's more refined pixel art and animation also more beautiful portrait illustration is quite dissapointing. Without internet and guide, I had to rely on my friend who borrowed me this game. Everyday in school we talked about what I played previous day and where I had to go next and discussing some game he played on PS1. So really this game also brought me a friend, there's also a Pokemon craze back then and he got a Gameboy and asked me to get one and played and trading but that was another story.

So I managed to beat Suikoden I with guidance from my friend but I think I only recruited 80+ people and I remember I had one person died, it was Luc I think lol. The game turns out really good, great story. I remembered I had trouble a lot for that goddamn Neclord castle, it was the painting puzzle. So I started playing Suikoden II after that and turns out another friend in our school had the magazine guide for both game, there was a Chrono Trigger Guide too but we only need Suikoden I and II, so we printed out that copy and I went back and played Suikoden I again to get perfect 108 because I'm such a OCD lol.

After replaying Suikoden I and getting all characters I realized this game is phenomenal, it's insane. This game is really short, upon replaying with guide I beat the game in 20 hrs with all characters, and quite honestly still better than some of other long 60+ hrs RPG.

Finally started to play Suikoden II and importing the complete save file from Suikoden I which I was spoiled on the guide about the importance of it. After the opening, you're saved by the returning character, The Bear from Suikoden I, I mean Lion... actually just call him Viktor and I loved it. Viktor is possibly my favorite character of Suikoden series, Suikoden II fleshed out his character and backstory more. I knew I had him all the time in my both Suikoden playthrough. So after running few errand for the Mercenary Fort, we came upon the greatest of all time Luca Blight
burning village
and his most famous line
"Die Pig!"
, and with that I realized this game is indeed insane, this game is serious, it's about war, it's only realistic to had someone getting hurt in war time which some game I played recently dissapointed me a bit (looking at you
Sen no Kiseki
).

And now I just realized how long my post has gotten and it is indeed my longest post here lol. And honestly I still had a lot to talked about Suikoden II, bonds between Riou Jowy and Nanami. Lots of memorable scene,
Mercenary Fort burned down, asking Shu's help (this one must be inspired by Three Kingdoms), escaping Tinto mine
, and more and more. Insane game that the game was about 25+ hrs too. I'll just leave it at that this is the BEST game I've played. Nothing could've topped it. And I still want to know about Pesmerga and Yuber, secret of Cindar Ruins, Holy Kingdom of Harmonia and Hikusaak's mystery, the rest of True Runes. Please Konami, don't let me die regretting not knowing all that ;_;

There's a few very easily missable characters, and you need 107 stars in order to get the last one before the last dungeon so a guide could be helpful if you're not interested in spending tons of time figuring it out.

I forget who the missable characters are now though unfortunately.

That's why I said "If you like exploring" :P If you visit all the towns after big events, and come back to dungeons, it's pretty easy to get them all.

The biggest problem is the deadline to recruit all the characters, and the parts where the game loves to put people on your party.

Oh, and remember, NEVER KILL ANYONE. Also, train Pahn.

...yeah, it may not be so easy to get them all. But if you want to go spoiler free, Training Pahn and saving before big events/battles, and visiting every town after big events nearby and dungeons after you finish them would probably be good tips.

To anyone who is waiting for a "sale" on this release for the sake of a couple of dollars is really doing this wonderful series a huge disservice. The game is already a bargain at $9.99 and I urge everyone who is having second thoughts to pick it up. It would be awesome to send a message to Konami that there is still alot of interest in Suikoden so that we may receive more and that won't happen unless people buy it. You won't regret it!

Is the second one a sequel or are they like Final Fantasy¿

The second has its own storyline but there are connections. Unlike Final Fantasy, the Suikoden games all take place in the same world with each game taking place in a different region. Suikoden 1 & 2 are the most connected in the series, with 2 taking place about three years after 1. There are many references to the first game, and they share many characters. You'll definitely appreciate 2 more if you play 1 first. 1 is still a really good game, and not terribly long.

I think he's probably the hardest one and probably the one most people miss (I'm trying to remain spoiler free but you know what I'm talking about).

Good stuff! 😃

I don't think finding 108 stars matters in terms of save transfer, but it definitely matters in order to get the proper ending.

Also finding the 108 stars is a huge part of what makes Suikoden games so fun. You should definitely make sure you get them all.

Thanks, will definitely give it my best shot. This is going to be a fun xmas break!

I recommend playing the first game, even though the second one is improved across the board. It just has more impact if you are already familiar with the world and concept.

Man, I hope Vandal Hearts 1+2 is next.

I tried but didn't really like Earthbound, Tales of anything, Persona anything, Dragon Quest anything, Star Ocean anything, Grandia 1 or 2, Nier, The Last Story, or Xenoblade.

But Suikoden II is a masterpiece. I don't think I'd recommend starting with the first one because I did and almost never played the sequel. It's just not nearly as good (though the battles are slightly better balanced and more challenging, and some of the music is great). But the graphics and level design were terrible and the plot and characters were not nearly good enough to hook a skeptic. Once I finished II though, I was happy to play the original for backstory.

If you get all 108 stars in Suikoden you
bring Gremio back to life, who then shows up in S2
which I really loved.

Nice story, pal.

I still own my original copies of Suikoden and Suikoden II, but I'm still buying both of these. Being able to play them on the Vita will be awesome.

I wish we could have Valkyrie Profile is some form, whether as PS1 classic or the PSP Lenneth port they did. I love this game so much, but it seems that history wants it dead or something :(

Love JRPG's, never heard of this. Unfortunately being on EU, I'll have to wait a while to get it. Sounds like I will enjoy it though.

By the way, if anyone played these and loved them but then played 3 (or 4) but hated where they went, or just stopped playing Suikoden after 2 anyway, I wholeheartedly recommend Suikoden V. It's slow starting which sucks, but man, once it gets going it's as good as 1+2 imo.

Can't wait to play it in January.

This picture is from one of Konami's artists that appeared on the Twitch stream. Perfect for this thread.

And you will! It was a pricing glitch. It's actually $9.99

So that's why I don't see it on the store? They took it down to raise the price?

Now I'm disappointed I missed it.

Also, I forgot how terrible the store on the PS3 is. I swear it gets worse with every update too. Took FOREVER to start and it's so slow.

Agree with you on Vandal Hearts. Loved those games and still have the discs. Would love to see them on the store.

I might have to watch a synopsis on Youtube about Suikoden 1. I finished it about 4-5 years ago. As soon as Tearaway is finished I'm jumping in this. Screw the backlog.

Sorry for the hiccup, folks. Sony is currently correcting the pricing, congrats to those that managed to snag it earlier, but as originally announced it will be $9.99. No official ETA but service will resume shortly.

Ha! I lucked out. I wouldn't have given it a try at $10, though, so I don't feel bad for taking advantage of the apparent pricing error. I hope it does well for you guys. Lots of folks clamoring for a continuation of the series. Maybe I'll be one of them soon!

I've only ever played one JRPG all the way through, and that was Suikoden 3 which I absolutely loved. For some reason I could never really get into any others. I've read 2 is a better game so I may have to give it a try, however I would kill for Suikoden 3 on the PSN.

Oh Pahn...

I think he's probably the hardest one and probably the one most people miss (I'm trying to remain spoiler free but you know what I'm talking about).

Yep. SAVE BEFORE THE BATTLES (When the strategist asks if you should deploy, say no, save, and go back) is probably enough, though. You can always grind a character before events if you need.

I actually used Pahn my first time playing the game, had him fairly built up, and well equipped. That one battle I actually won my first time.

Yup it's up at $9.99...just need Suikoden to go up now. Weird that they haven't updated it for Vita.
