Can anyone explain why the game is so good? I read the first few pages of the thread and the announcement one, no one has yet to delve into specifics on what makes it "the best rpg ever". I know there are loads and loads of characters, and they're not entirely flat, but that's about all I know.
Is the combat amazing? Great story? Plot twists? What does this game have that really sets it apart? Does the game actually still hold up today or does nostalgia carry it?

A+ story & characters, great battle system, some of the best & last 2d spritework that really feels like a generational leap from SNES/Genesis days, incredible music, top-notch presentation with no load times and battles being only a few seconds long quickness. Lengthy story, lots of secrets.
Basically everything about the game is perfect. There is no area where the game could be improved.
Suikoden 1 is a very rough version of all that. Think Shadow Hearts 1 -> SH2.
