The Irresponsible Captain Tylor 17-19
Episode 17:
Yet another curveball thrown at the audience regarding Tylor's personality. Here he is, brainwashed and still manages to provide a critical insight that only a few Raalgan have picked up on! Is he really an idiot? Is he really just a lucky guy? Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your view of how long this arc
should go), this is not pick up on by Azalyn and the only other people there already know it (damn you Wang for manipulating our precious Azalyn!).
This episode also marks a key turning point for the crew, where they basically "Tylor" themselves out of a very stick situation during their escape (it involves a machine gun and some rather stupid officers but hey....). We now really get to see glimpses on what this show is trying to achieve and that Tylor is actually starting to have a positive effect on his crew!
Episode 18: Another mix of drama and comedy, we see some development in Yamamoto as well. He effectively pulls a Tylor to save his crew! Not only that, but the entire rescue operation is a complete Tylor move. Go up against a super battleship with only a simple Destroyer? Eh, we'll make it up as we go along!
It's nice to see the unpredictability of the show return in this episode as well. How the entire rescue operations resolves itself is something few people will be able to predict (I mean, it involves a failed assassination attempt for pete's sake). We also now start a major dramatic mini-arc as Tylor isn't doing so hot!
Episode 19: This is a very important episode because I think it marks the first steps towards Yuriko finally becoming a likable character. In all honesty, she has always been the annoying croon of the ship and hasn't done a lot to warrant any love from the audience, except in her roles as a foil to Tylor's antics. That she herself volunteers to rescue him is surely the first sign that she really cares about him as more than just a Captain!
Another interesting thing about this episode is that we finally get a sneak peak into Tylor's mind! I know I'm not the only one who wondered what goes on inside that brain of his, to be able to remain cool in insane situations. The "multiple Tylor syndrome" we see in there is a mix of what he puts out and what he either holds in or is programmed with through the brainwashing. There are signs of genius in there, of cynicism, etc. Which ones are real? The series trolls us a bit as we never truly find out (maybe the series is asking us to draw our own conclusions!). In what is surely a sign of things to come between Yuriko and Tylor, Yuriko ends up being the key to rescuing Tylor (as Azalyn eventually becomes part of the problem)!
