Whether the attention spans of hyperactive children or teenage duckroll could hack it is immaterial to me. The deliberate pacing of the film is conducive to the weight of the messages being expressed. Not every work of art has to have "entertainment value" as a top priority (or as a priority at all.)

But heck, kids can somehow apparently find My Neighbor Totoro more interesting than watching paint dry in real time, so maybe I am underestimating their attention spans. :p

All that said, I have not actually read NOTGR (English translations being hard to come by) or watched any of the animu adaptations of Galaxy Express 999. You are either trying to entice me or imagining lesbians (again) or both. :<

It's not really about attention spans. It's really about the quality of what you do with the pace you have chosen. The movie is paced poorly, and whatever impact the pacing is supposed to have and whatever feeling it's supposed to invoke is secondary to whether it is actually effective in engaging the audience into feeling interested in those feelings. The movie completely fails in this aspect. It's just boring.

I think you're talking about Summer Wars.

Hunter x Hunter TV anime series starts this Fall on Nihon TV. It will be a complete redo like FMA:B, from the very beginning of the manga. The staff and cast will be brand new. The staff was announced today. The cast will be announced in the near future.

My wish has been granted. When it starts, I guess I will start the manga too and read along. I love fresh faithful adaptations

Hanasaku Iroha 17
This episode didn't seem to have any conclusion to the arc. Shit hit the fan with the movie production an Kisuisso lost alot of money and then after Enishi running around like a chicken with his head he apologizes to his Mom and then thats the end of it? This arc seemed to be about Enishi's relationship with Takako and his sister but these never got explored very much and I'm left wondering what the whole point of it all was.

Nichijou 17
This show has gotten much more consistently enjoyable in it second cour. Its too bad it took a whole season to get there. The whole bit with the house of cards was wonderful using only music and animation to tell the story.

Nichijou 18
These last two episodes had a lot of call backs to previous jokes. I lost it at both the opening bit with Mio and Yuko at the coffee shop and the next episode preview with a talking frapaccino. Yuko constantly getting embarrassed on the train was another highlight. This show is always at its best when Yuko is suffering.

Mushi-Shi
Welcome to the NHK

For the record, I've already watched:

All Studio Ghibli films

Neon Genesis Evangelion
The Vision of Escaflowne
FLCL
Baccano
Now and Then, Here and There
Samurai Champloo
Serial Experiments Lain
Memories

Thanks guys!
You haven't watched Cromartie High School? What is wrong with you? Go watch the dubbed version right now

Penguin Drum 4
I already love the show but each passing episode is making me love it more and more. Great ending to the episode. I'm almost convinced that Ringo is a complete psychopath but I'm sure this is just some clever plot device to keep the audience guessing.

I also loved the Utena-esque sequences with Ringo and the "Princess". The actress song was great.

It will officially start airing on 2nd Oct 2011. It is going to air every Sunday at 10:55 am. The late morning weekend time slot, combined with the fact that this is a Madhouse production that is airing on NTV (the station which owns Madhouse now), pretty much confirms that the series will probably run forever. 999999999999 episodes here we come!

Why, where do you think it's going?
The place where people discuss how old a particular anime character is so to see whether it would be legal to have sex with them? Is that a good place?

It's just, compared to other Miyazaki works, it is much less lively and less interesting to look at, even the comparatively derided ones like Howl's Moving Castle or Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea. I don't feel it captures the everyday life vibe as well as a Takahata film. It's safe to say I don't 'get' the adoration for Totoro and never have.
I think that Kiki's Delivery Service is actually closer to a Takhata style work than Totoro even though neither revel in the kind of quiet mundanity that Takahata excels in. But I think that's fine because Miyzaki has a different style where he aims to breathe a little bit of magic and whimsy into everyday occurrences, something which Takahata has no interest in. Which is what most people, I assume, enjoy about Totoro.

As good a place as any within the realm of anime.

Not that it would make a lick of difference given the topic.

Nope. They're gonna run out of manga to adapt by episode 90. That is unless Togashi decides to get off his ass and do more than 8 chapters every 2 years.

It felt a bit like three different groups of people made the three different toned sections of this episode. The flashback segment with it's weak storyboarding and poor animation coupled with really hackneyed dialogue, the wacky home sections and finally the 'main plot' which felt like a fairly normally piece of the show.

I don't think cramming all that stuff together works unless the people making a show are more skilled than this team.

Also, everyone knows that "all the powers" is really the most hax power ever, only used by lazy writers!

Well I think the announcement of this anime reboot is supposed to coincide with the announcement that Togashi is once again getting off his lazy ass and resuming the manga serialization. Whether he sticks with it is another matter. :P

Sailor Moon Kai? What is there to change? It was a monster-of-the-week-anime type to begin with. Unless they're starting from scratch and are going to do the manga straight as it was.

Would be nice. I wouldn't even care if it was all scribbles again now that we have another anime. I doubt he'll stick with it though and end up replaying the entire DQ series while boning his Sailor Moon wife before doing another chapter.

Holy crap, I came out of lurking just to gush over this dream come true. HxH is one of sadly forgotten shounen anime I have fond memories of. So good~

Maybe it's time for me to finally get into the Hunter x Hunter manga. I think I remember reading up through volume 5 a long time ago.

Anyway, time for the most boring day of Saimoe results since the first. Interest seems like it's waning all around now.

[Hanasaku Iroha 18]

This show still knows how to be pretty darn good, even when they have fanservice all over the place. This isn't too surprising though, because the show has been inconsistent throughout.

This episode was as good as any of the first half episodes, bar the pilot and the Tokyo arc.

Utena 35~End

Loved how they built the final climax in eps 35/36/36. Totally fabulous episodes. And I mean FABULOUS MAX.

The character development, the atmosphere, the music, the final revelations,
the slightly bittersweet ending
... everything was perfect.
The sword impalement scene left me quite shocked

One of the best animus I've ever seen. I'm gonna miss you Utena ;_;

Now I'm prepared to fully enjoy Mawaru Penguin Drum!!!!

An anime adaptation of Tomohiro Matsu's Papa no Iu Koto o Kikinasai! (Listen to me, girls. I am your father!) light novel series has been green-lit. The "slapstick at-home romantic comedy" revolves around Yūta Segawa, a 19-year-old college freshman who suddenly discovers that he must be the father of three girls.

Segawa had just gotten into college and settled into his first semester with new friends, but the plane that his older sister and her husband were riding went missing. As a result, Segawa has to watch over the middle school girl Sora, the fifth-grader Miu, and the kindergartener Hina in his tiny 3-meter-by-4-meter (9-foot-by-12-foot) apartment.

Matsu also created the Mayoi Neko Overrun! light novel series and oversaw the scripts for its anime adaptation, and he wrote for the Queen's Blade: The Exiled Virgin anime. Matsu has written seven Papa no Iu Koto o Kikinasai! light novel volumes since 2009, and Yuka Nakajima illustrates them. Yōhei Takemura will be adapting the story into a manga in Shueisha's Jump Square shōnen magazine on August 4, while Tomō Katō will be adapting the story into another manga called Papa no Iu Koto o Kikinasai ~Miu-sama no Iu Tōri!~ in Shueisha's Cookie shōjo magazine on August 26.
