Nichijou 16 - Yes, I know I'm behind again. At least I started to catch up... and yeah, great episode. This show sure is consistent, most of the first half was more Yukko getting trolled... still, it was mostly funny though, and the second part, where Yukko visited Nano's house, was pretty sweet. She sure is easygoing, has no issue with Nano being a robot, etc. Also, Yukko and the Professor get along really, really well. :)

Sounds like something to wait for the Blu Rays for like Manyuu Hikenchou, but I'll definitely check it out after K-On!. Dunno about it being better than Mayo Chiki though; I think I lean fetishs on the fetish vs. pantyshots scale, not that I don't love a good pantyshot.
Yeah, waiting for the Blu-Rays is what I'd recommend, but perhaps try it then.

It isn't terrible but R-15 isn't really in the same league as Mayo Chiki. It is basically a series of misunderstandings with girls in animated form, and it never really moves beyond a small set of jokes.
Oh come on, as if Mayo Chiki is really anything special? It's a collection of fetishes in human form interacting with eachother, essentially. That's all. That's not exactly something I'd put so high over R-15...

Anyway, it's not all misunderstandings. What are you talking about? Do you mean the "the MC keeps getting blamed for things he sort of didn't do" stuff? That does happen multiple times, but in different ways each time and that's not the only joke the show has.

Kawaii?

I don't get why they are still introducing girls so late into the show. They are not trying to hide this is all for figurine sales. I would drop this already if them feet weren't so alluring.

On that note, are there any anime series based on light novels where the novels actually finished and the anime actually adapted it all?

Toradora is the first one that comes immediately to mind, and I THINK Gosick ended up adapting everything too.

Gosick anime ended before the LN.

You sure Toradora adapted everything? 10 volumes condensed into 25 episodes seems pretty hard to do.

All my designs passed, happily.

Here they are for those who missed it:

Hanasaku Iroha 14

What a boring pointless episode. I have no idea how long I can last keep watching it. On one hand a bit more than half of the show is done, but still that's a lot of episodes left.

Kamisama no Memochou 3

Decent episode but felt weaker than the premier one. Plus the fact that I watched this one late made me forget everyone names so I was clueless most of the time about who they were mentioning.

Steins Gate 1

I should have started watching this earlier. Any anime with time travel deserves a watch no matter how terrible it can get.

alright animegaf i caved and have watched all 4 episodes of Penguindrum. all i can say is WTF?!?!?!??! it isnt terrible but it isnt completely and utterly fantastic. its just kind of there. this shit better pick up is all i can say.

Too much pony has made you unable to appreciate the penguin.

I don't understand how people can say Penguin Drum is boring (or "just there". As an aside, what the hell does just there even mean?)

I would understand someone hating it, sure. The brand of humor and the sight gags or the setting might not be for everyone. But boring? How?

Agree with you. Penguindrum is anything but boring.

Because it's directionless and nothing happens.

YuruYuri 5 - Holy shiiiiiiiiiiiit. Spoilers!
I definitely was not expecting the kiss to actually happen. I just assumed that the show would be a big cocktease with nothing ever happening.
Fucking incredible. Looks like I definitely chose the right team before the season started.

Ouran High School Host Club 1 Rewatch:

Man this really is the perfect anime to end a horrible, boring day. Sometimes all you need is an actually good show, that makes you laugh and lets you simply enjoy it. After getting burned out on the offending shit I tried to watch the last few weeks rewatching Ouran is a godsend. Maybe I am no good at watching offending shit like Angel Beats! just to be able to shit on it?

Why did you decide to watch it anyways?

i never said it was boring... its just not super exciting. its amusing but i just dont think it is all that great. i will admit some of the sight gags are great.

No on both counts.

Well, people can find anything boring, but "just there" isn't really a form of criticism.

zeroshiki said:
So you hate it?

I think it's boring. If something is boring, I do not like it. Now I haven't watched episode 4, but I doubt it will change my opinion unless someone dies or goes REALLY insane (not the mild insane
Ringo
displayed in 2 and 3).

The penguins don't transform and punch each other with flaming fists 1000x times. Clearly its boring and directionless.

This is really rich coming from someone defending 100 episode shows a few weeks ago.

So basically moar shounen is needed then?

still letting this series pile up some more before i take a view.

It sounds like you should be watching episode 4.

Penguin Drum's probably not your kind of show (unfortunately for you, since it's amazingly well-directed), but you should at least watch Episode 4 before giving up on it.

Even with those shows, the framework is usually laid down in the first few episodes. I will almost always know if I'll enjoy it from episode 1. The rare examples where this isn't the case are series that undergo a genre shift.

Right now, I still have no idea what Penguin Drum is about. A basic plot beyond "find the Penguin Drum" (which we don't even know what the thing is) hasn't been established as of episode 3. I consider that directionless. Without any kind of direction, I get bored.

Just my 2 cents.

How is "find the Penguindrum" not a quest? what the hell. Directionless? Yeah, if you have the attention span of a dead chicken. What is the penguin drum? Quest. Who has it? Quest. Where can we find it? Quest. How can we get it? Quest.

Hell, I find it way more interesting because I don't know where it's going. Being able to predict things is boring.

What's Ichigo's objective? Goku? Naruto wants to be Hokage but the story is nothing about him becoming Hokage. Luffy? We don't even know what the One Piece is!

But there's still a framework there! One Piece is about an ocean adventure, Naruto is about ninjas fighting, Bleach is about swords and ghosts and Mexicans.

Right now, we barely even know what genre Peng Drum is.

Of course Cosmic I agree with the assertion you can generally tell if you'll enjoy a show or not by the end of the first episode, and I totally respect your right to not like Penguindrum. Just... directionless is not a legit complaint about it.

Right now, we barely even know what genre Peng Drum is.

Have you considered the idea that stories are not bound by genre limitations

That's a WHOLE different discussion right there. I personally believe that there should be some way to categorize things just so you can figure out what you like. For me, Penguin Drum is out there, and not in a good way. It doesn't seem like it knows what it wants to be, and at that point, I may as well just call it slice of life. In that case, I'm gonna find it super boring.

It's handy, but it's not a requirement. A story is a story is a story. I still have no idea what Haruhi actually is, but I found it interesting and enjoyable.

For the record, I think that Penguindrum knows exactly what it wants to be, it's just not letting you in on it yet.

Yeah, it was a bit surprising, though once the skit started I was expecting something to happen in the end, they went a bit farther with it than I'd have guessed... poor Akarin.

As for show of the season though, no, Nichijou and Dantalian are better, but it is quite good.

It's hard to explain, but R-15 is very vapid in comparison to Mayo Chiki. It checks boxes for character types, it relies on heavy handed exposition and over the top antics/animation for humor, there are few world rules in place so anything can happen with little to no consequence. It doesn't take itself seriously but it isn't funny enough to get by on that, so it just feels sort of...trashy and bad. I would imagine that's why the gratuitous nudity comes into play, because there's little of substance to be found elsewhere.

Dantalian no Shoka 2 - Hnnngghh, Dalian. I'm not quite sure what it is about this show, but I really enjoy it. Classy as hell, awesome music. Maybe I'm just a nerd for the setting. I don't know, but I love it.
