Toradora was one of the better high school romance shows out there. Outside of say School Rumble but that one won automatically because it had the manliest looking lead ever.

Fate Kaleid prisma Illya 2wei - 02

Alright, thanks for replies guys, Toradora it is. School Days sounds morbidly interesting but I need something at least decent to wash down Omega.

Will check out Oreimo at some point in time too.

I also don't recall a lot of comedic violence in Toradora that usually irritates me, though I'm sure it was present, but even when Taiga would tsundere at Ryu it usually took the form of being an irritable grouch rather than LOL HAHA LOOK SHE'S HITTING HIM. Except that first time when she was swinging the sword around.

I hate tsunderes. I think they are stupid.
There we go again with the tsundere generalisations.

I really hate the hard press tsundere whose tsun sides are unreasonable (beating the protagonist just because or because he said something nice that embarred her). Happens somewhat often in fantasy settings, because its funny when the protagonist gets thrown trough a wall, gets electricuted or something like that.
But there are milder forms of tsundere out there. The important thing is how the tsun shows. If the character just shits on the protagonist all the time or if the character is just a bit harsher with the protagonist than with everybody else.

I enjoy Toradora. Not exactly my favorite anime ever, but i recommend it more than School days and Oreimo

Note: Marie my 1st playthrough waifu in P4G. She's cool yo. Her poet on the otherhand, is so damn cringe worthy.

The show's formed so many units and sub-units from its cast by this point. I am glad that getting Yurika a new singing voice means she can be part of the bus tour, and Ran and Aoi have excuses for why they're absent. The main thrust of this storyline looks to be Ichigo and Seira's friendship once more. I'm okay with that, this season's done a decent job at balancing everyone. And since the last Constellation Dress is Gemini, there's no one else that can be but Sakura. Maybe a few episodes from now, once the tour's over.

Lets take a stroll down memory lane (although I still don't know how frequently these articles will be published).

The Escaflowne movie and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust were the definitive standouts for me that year. The art style and direction ( at least as far as individual scenes are concerned; they were a bit disjointed on the larger scale) of both are still among the best even to this day.

My bad, my bad... I knew I shouldn't have doubted you on this matters, comrade. :)

Ikuko Itō is the queen of that stuff, and the best thing is 'Master of the Freeze-Frame' crobdan already makes for you the screenshot selection (http://crobdan.tumblr.com/tagged/Ikuko-Ito).

Amazing. Going through those pictures right now. They really are very good!

I support this.

Taiga wasn't even my favorite girl, but I was satisfied with the story. She got better fast with her tsundere antics and I really liked how she wasn't violent exclusively for Protagonist.

I like Taiga. Shes really adorable. At first she was the same sort of tsundere that annoyed me but quickly her dere side showed up and hnnnnnngh. I have limited tolerance for this kind of character but when its done right she turns into a sweetheart. I suppose it just comes down to how well the character is written and whether they stay abusive or open up to the MC.

Yeah unless you have an overwhelming urge to complete it, stay away. It's really terrible and laughable. Whatever budget they had left, it feels like they put half of it into atrocious cloth designs.

Someday a miracle will happen and TMS will produce another season of Lost Canvas.

Hmmm School Days and Oreimo are supposed to be train wrecks correct ? Think i'll go for Toradora.

School Days is a train wreck, but its one that everyone has to pull over to the side of the road and look at.

Oreimo is a heartwarming tale of two siblings who overcome all odds to show their true feelings for each other. Also, eroge.

Toradora is good too. You should watch all three.

Oh this is AWESOME! Thanks for the link as always /XX/. Not only is this a massive nostalgia trip right back to when I was just getting into anime, but it's massively well researched and has some detail I didn't know - particularly about some of my favourites from that list. I had no idea, for instance, that the Escaflowne movie was limited by funding rather than ambition. The focus both on technical elements and storytelling is much appreciated; I wish I could write like this about anime.

EDIT: in light of Midonin's defence of the harem genre the other day, the section on Love Hina is particularly interesting. I won't apologise for the long quote although I've taken out the interesting digression on the reasons for Love Hina's popularity - the original article is much longer and very much worth a read.

tamerlane said:
Though shows like Urusei Yatsura and Tenchi Muyo were precursors in a sense, it was Love Hina that was responsible for the spread of the harem genre. All of the central characteristics of the genre, like the everyman audience insert main character and the smorgasboard of cute girls all inexplicably in love with him, are epitomized in Love Hina. It’s easy to see how this type of writing could devolve into tedium: the show and manga both try to defer any kind of romantic progress as long as possible so that the audience can entertain their ideal matchup (bland MC and the girl of their choice) until it no longer proves convenient. Many of the show’s jokes revolve around Naru getting mad at Keitaro for getting into romantic situations with the other girls and violently overreacting, almost as if Akamatsu built in this narrative device to prevent his story from ever going anywhere. It’s a lazy, consequence-free way of doing romance and when the humor falls flat as frequently as it does in Love Hina, it’s difficult to stay engaged.

...

That isn’t to say raunchy comedy is itself bad. While most film scholars recognize that porn can be art (for a Japanese example, refer to the “pink eiga” genre), and even a select few hentai are usually considered ‘artistic’ by anime fans (e.g. Cream Lemon and Umetsu’s porno thrillers), the related ecchi genre is held in general contempt. Fanservice has been around since Go Nagai, but often it’s coupled with something of narrative interest: period piece, sci-fi, police thrillers, what have you. With the rise of the harem genre, entire programs could now be little more than glorified vehicles for fanservice, with a buffet line of fetish-satisfying potential girlfriends running through a procedurally limited set of motions. As a result, there emerged a puritanical backlash to fanservice of any kind among some viewers. Many of the complaints leveled against the ecchi genre have merit: the fanservice is often the same uncreative and repetitive T&A shots, the shows never do anything interesting thematically with the fanservice, and there’s a strange underlying uneroticness since the characters rarely ever sleep with one another. Also, unlike most examples of art porn, shows of this genre are more likely to carry a pernicious, casually misogynistic sentiment. Yet these underlying problems are often conflated with the use of softcore sexuality itself, a valid means of engaging with your audience.

(also I love the paragraph on Cardcaptor Sakura. I love this whole article, basically.)

WELL. It was ok, not as good as Heartcatch or Smile's movie, though.

However...

BLEEDING PRECURE WHAT THE HELL.

Thanks for the link.

I know this is a shounen manga but the aesthetic is the perfect distillation of shoujo. The wispy edges on the backgrounds, the designs, the cherry blossoms. It's also just plain interesting to look at - the shot early in the CM where someone is composing at the piano just out of shot makes interesting use of angles, and the characters are attractively shadowed throughout.

Everything about the promotion of this series seems almost "cinematic". It feels much more like it's appealing to the "live action" audience that noitaminA was once about than even fans of this type of anime usually - this CM with its floating text, quick cuts and series dialogue rather than narration etc. made me think of this in particular.

I'm looking forward to this show a lot!

Tsunderes are at their best when the show is a SoL and they're just jealous one friend is getting more attention or they don't know how to get a certain gift for a friend.

Sharo from GochiUsa.

tsundere girls in an all girls cast is cheating since it creates a crutch for tsunderes to avoid their problems.

School Days is actually pretty good. It's one of my favourite series (the games). Just don't take it too seriously and it is pretty funny.
Oreimo and Toradora aren't very good though, with Toradora being less bad, but it's still pretty ruined by Taiga's existence.

On tsunderes... Tsunderes are good when they are actual tsunderes. When they just become abusive girls who say the opposite of what they mean 99% of the time, well, that isn't really tsundere any more, and yes it does suck.

Glasslip 03

Camping trip! The hair dryer moment was a bit expected, but the whole thing was mostly just a lot of fun character interaction. While the glassblowing isn't quite as prominent as people were thinking, there was a decently long sequence of it this time, and I'm thinking more about how they may be trying to play metaphorically into the larger parts of the shows. Something fragile, but ultimately beautiful.

Wouldn't that just make her an exception?
And I'm talking personality-wise
True. Sharo actually has the drive to provide for her family since they are poor rather than it just being a "Hey my family is poor ya know!" Her's is "Hey my family is poor and I work 3 part time jobs to help out!"

Oh fine I admit that those tsundere get it easy because they don't really have to face their flaws. Course it tends to be none of the girls in those shows do except for the MC usually.

At least we know Ultimadrago is still up-to-date on this matters, so that means he just doesn't want to be with us on this thread anymore. :'-(

Sharing is caring, and if true 'connoisseurs' like crobdan or busterbeam Gutsy Frog aren't here to do it for themselves I'll gladly be the peasant messenger... :)

Thas a pretty nice anthology but it will be alooooooot of work to complete that.

What is this magical console that only needs a HDMI cable for the sake of hooking it up to your TV? No power cable or cable to the Kinect appear to be necessary
