Super Mario 3D World: New Trailer

I'm on the I've-seen-this-trailer-more-than-10-times team.

Can't wait to use all the new power ups. Can't wait for 4 people multiplayer chaos.

It's literally a console sequel to 3D Land. It'll always be a console sequel to 3D Land. There's no room for the words "essentially" or "still" here.

Love your description, though. A console sequel to 3D Land that's also basically an isometric/3D version of the NSMB games. Makes total sense.

Killzone:Shadowfall (Ps4) is a sequel to Killzone:Mercenaries (Vita) and Uncharted 4 will be a sequel to Uncharted Vita.

3D Land is also a critically acclaimed game that has sold upwards of 5 million copies.

.....maybe there should be a separate post on what the definition of a sequel is?

Well...this trailer made this game jump up my christmas list my wife ask me to write for her. It wasn't even in the list to begin (was planning to get it later), that trailer sold me the game in an instant O_O...same for Zelda 3DS, jump up my 3DS list (and is quite long giving it includes games from LAST year).

I just don't get the hype. Personally, the only thing that trailer had going for it was the music.
Yeah I can't either. Game looks charming as expected from Nintendo, but....I'll just keep my mouth shut.

But for those really excited for the game then awesome. I hope this will turn things around for the WiiU

As someone who considers SMG2 to be if not the best game ever, one of the top 3, the reveal of 3D World was really lackluster for me. That said, this trailer basically sold me. It's still based on 3D Land's gameplay, which I don't mind at all, but now they've shown Galaxy levels of creativity and it is a joy to see.

If there's one thing Nintendo nailed when passing to the HD era, it's the lighting.

God DAMN that lighting!

one thing for sure, I'm really jealous of those buying a WiiU along with this game. It will feel like Chrismas morning

Well, it is possible to be critical without trolling! I'd be curious to hear the other side, as I'm really pumped by that trailer, and so much reaction has been so positive.

I think lighting is the real next-gen thing, more than particles everywhere kinda thing. GTAV has a lot of technical flaws, but its lighting is incredible, and that's what makes it look as good as it does on old hardware. Mario Kart 8 direct screens aren't the prettiest things in the world, but the videos look impressive because of the great lighting. I think they must've borrowed some of that tech from the MK team for this one.

It's not really relevant in this case, is it? It's redundant to say 3D World is "essentially a console sequel to 3D Land" on the basis of their similarities, when it's literally a follow-up to 3D Land. I suppose you can argue what exactly 3D World is, but whether you use the word "follow-up" or "sequel," the point remains the same.

As for Uncharted Vita... I thought that was a prequel? ;)

For me it just showed a huge depth of variety. Lot's of enemies, power-ups, and level-styles. It was also nice to see some of the bigger environments. A confirmation of every possible Wii controller method was a nice touch too.

It also looks to offer a nice difficulty. The e3 stuff looked way too easy.

I was just tired of seeing 'sequel to 3D Land' used in a negative, derogatory sense. Sorry if I misinterpreted your post. The game looks fantastic regardless of what it is.

If Nintendo revealed this exact same game with a complete different title, none of these arguments would even exist

Bless, Gaf. I'm glad someone can see the silver lining. The isometric view and overall look of this feels less epic then I would like. Nowhere close to Galaxy caliber. This looks like another Mario game going through the motions. Sorry to play devils advocate :(

there's also no reason for anyone to eat crow for having an opinion based on the information Nintendo fed in that first trailer. Makes no sense.

Well, I can say that it is sort of in that category of games that aren't quite hype-able based on appearance. For some reason when 3D Land was coming out I didn't spend that much time hyping that either. I was coming from the experience of 3D Mario being similar to the Galaxies, and I actually wasn't the greatest fan of the Galaxy games. Barely talked about that game at all. It was just something that was there to me, like Mario Kart. Maybe "going through the motions" Mario might've been a way to describe it. The image the game had was just not very grabbing - yet I ended up beating it twice to completion. I think I've started on it a third time now. I put massive time into that game. So my excitement for this one is based in how absolutely grabbing 3D Land managed to make itself. This one just looks even better in every way imaginable. It looks like it'll be like what NSMB:U was to NSMB2. Similar in concept, yet the console one is incredibly fleshed out in comparison to the fun yet shallow handheld game.

Im actually surprised a few seem way off the deep end in this thread compared to previous 3d world discussions

I don't think that's possible. The previous thread was like a war zone lol.

I saw the trailer and loved it, even though I was already sold. Really pleasantly surprised reading the reactions in this thread. It appears most people were genuine in that they just wanted to see some more creativity before getting on board.

Looks great for what it is.

But I wanted it to be more like an open world game. But then again not everything has be the way I want it to be:(

The scenarios certainly look a lot better than what they showed at E3, but the structure of the game is still very much in the 3D Land mold: 2D-like, highly constrictive environments, constant forward progression, and levels built entirely around one idea (transparent pipes! conveyor belts! rafting!)

It's ironic that Nintendo has managed to make the levels as restrictive as anything this side of Crash Bandicoot. Which of course is why so many people who disliked 64 are loving this.

But it's clearly a big step back from the Galaxy series in level design and variety. Galaxy levels would regularly throw three or four distinct challenges at the player, effortlessly blending 64 style tropes with a more linear approach (to the point where people still miss the obvious 64 influences in the game); 3D Land/World are just not doing any of that.

That's where "Nintendo magic" comes from. EAD.

Can't sell my boy Aonuma short, though. He takes crap from time to time but overall when it comes to the Zelda series he's been outstanding. Remember, Wind Waker is considered one of the best Zeldas, and that was done on his watch. He's the man.

I feel this game was terrible at E3, but now I think it's awesome.

But browser kidnapped an elf using bottle? Dosen't link always do this kinds of things?

EAD Tokyo Group No. 1 - Producer Shimizu
Photo Together with Super Mario AR (maybe?)

EAD Tokyo Group No. 2 - Producer Koizumi
Super Mario 3D World
Flipnote Studio 3D (we assume they are handling this update)
Secret Project

They said Photo Together was done by the Galaxy team, so in my head I had Flipnote being done by No. 1.

We all know Link violates basic human and creature rights on a daily basis.

Wow, this and the WW HD makes a compelling case for me to get this over the PS4 in November, since all the launch games I want are also coming out for the PS3.

Iwata said himself in this direct the two teams (ead and zelda team) work side by side in the same (big?) room so yeah that's a clear reference to them.

It looks fantastic, but I'm still not buying a Wii U until it's either $200 or less, or an amazing 3D Zelda is released that I didn't play 10 years ago.

I love how the game looks, but in the end, all that matters are the ideas and what the game does to keep you entertained. Mario galaxy was a beautiful game when you consider the hardware for which it was designed, but what made the game stand out was the brilliant execution. The new gravity mechanics and how the game felt fresh and made you want to explore all the mini-galaxies. Everything else was a bonus. The visuals and the amazing art-direction, the superb music and all the little touches that demonstrate all the effort and care that went into the game were just a plus. Like a beautiful packaging for a gift you really wanted to receive.

This trailer gave me the same feeling I got the first time I saw a SMG trailer. I want to explore that world. I want to use the power-ups. I want to play as Cat Mario and climb Thwomps. I want to use the Boomerang. I want to walk on invisible walkways and I want to disguise myself as a Goomba and walk around undetected. I want to use the boomerang, and shoot cannonballs and fireballs with a little army created with the help of Double Cherrys.

Can't wait.

Different Mario teams. Zelda and NSMB teams are on the same floor in Kyoto, 3D Mario is about 2 hours away by bullet train in Tokyo.

The worldmap/over world looks very interesting. Can't wait to see more of that (and its secrets!).

Yeah, I just hope it has a bit of depth to it, and not just like ground pound specific spots to get 1-ups. It looks like a very neat idea, though. Best part is it seems to be completely optional (as in, you can just run directly from stage-to-stage, rather than wandering around).

Hopefully there will be secret or bonus levels you can uncover unlock by exploring.
