Super Mario 3D World: New Trailer

I'm really lazy, so somebody please post some screenshots proving this guy's point wrong. There are so many things in this trailer that are nothing like NSMB, it's ridiculous that you would even make such a statement.

It's Anticitizen One. No use trying to show him things.

No, I'm going to have to flat out disagree with you on 64's later levels; if you couldn't handle them, then I feel it is your imperative to get better at the game, not to dumb down the controls so everyone falls to your level.

And even disregarding 64--Galaxy 1 & 2 worked pretty well without a run button, somehow. The gameplay style simply doesn't need one. As far as I can tell, from its inclusion in 3D Land originally, it's a needless concession to the 2D fans who could never get into 3D Mario, which is a point of view I find toxic to the series. Let them stand alone.

I don't understand how the concept of a run button dumbs it down, though. I have never played a single Mario game where I ever felt the need to walk, so naturally I just kept my finger on the run button while playing 3D Land and the classic games. The lack of complex jumping mechanics and more than 16 specific directions you can run, sure, that sucks, but having a run button simple makes things more precise.

Also, I'd just like to say that while 64's controls were amazing for just fucking around and enjoying the game, they really are rather poor by today's standards of precision platforming, Sunshine and Galaxy improved upon them 100%.

Of course Sunshine, Galaxy, and World were different than 64. 64 was one of the first 3D video games ever created. The former two were done on more powerful hardware and with more experience and the latter was done on a 16bit system.

Do you want Nintendo to hire Kutaragi and make Super Mario 4D World or something?

I want Nintendo to make something other than a NSMB type game recycling the same fucking enemies and level types over and over again with only minimal new concepts inserted here and there.

Look at the diversity between these 3 games:

Showed my wife, the very definition of a casual gamer, this trailer and now we are buying a Wii U in november. She lost her mind at cat mario.

My wife was sold on cat Toad in the earlier videos.

3DW is harnessing the power of the internets fascination with cats.

The run button doesn't bother me. I keep it held down for the same reason I keep it held down in the 2D games. w/e.

Same fucking enemies? Did you even watch the trailer? Tons of new enemies and new power ups.

I will however agree with you on level types. They need to mix that up.

So is Nintendo just going to stick to the NSMB universe/aesthetic/formula going forward? I remember when Super Mario 64 was a radical change from SMW and Sunshine and Galaxy were very different from SM64. I mean sure the HD graphics are nice (Which was expected) but everything else is just more of the same.

Super Mario 64 was a hideous mess... I mean... look at what they did to Thwomp.

The aesthetic they are going for currently is making the worlds and characters look like their character art and they're doing a damn fine job of it. Galaxy shares this same style.

Where's the "formula" here?

Super Mario 64 was a masterpiece at a time when Nintendo was about making exceptional mindblowing never done before titles. Maybe after this game bombs and Iwata steps down we can get back to that.

Seriously why are you guys even arguing with them at this point? Who cares? If they haters are still hung up on an outdated style of plarformer that Rare ran into the ground over a decade ago, then it's their loss. Just watch the gifs and smile...

The formula is strictly sticking to grass/desert/fire/etc levels, which 3D Land did. However, 3D World seems to be improving this by adding a bit more variety. Although I suppose not quite as much originality as you'd hope from the creators of Sunshine/Galaxy, it still looks pretty damn good and there are some cool levels such as a carnival, a highway, a battlefield, etc.

Don't worry about it, I'll sum them up for you:

"All of my observations on the game were completely accurate as of the time I made them and I still stand by them. It looked as bad as I said it did. This is Nintendo's fault for throwing together a bland build for their conference. Frankly it still looks quite poor and I still dislike the core of the game, that 8 way movement on blocky platforms. 'New' mechanics like a cannon block on Mario's head are as uninspired as 3D Land's propeller block and continue to demonstrate that this is a sequel, first and foremost. Some shiny setpieces aren't enough to elevate this game above the core of its mechanics, which we already know quite well. Still not what I wanted, but judging by reactions, it may be closer to what Nintendo needed."

You forgot "It's not for me, but if an expanded level pack is what you're looking for, you'll be well taken care of."

The only thing more safe than what Freezie KO thinks this game is is predicting what Freezie KO thinks of this game.

Hahaha I'm dying here

Wat. Your complaints are not valid at all with this game though. Seriously wat. Have you played 3d land? Did you bother watching the trailer for 3d world?

Either you're trolling or you're naive.

Based on 3D Land sales, 3D World is exactly what Wii U needs - and that's ignoring what you or I think about the quality of the game on a personal level.

Kind of hating myself for selling my Wii U a few weeks ago, but I kind of needed the money at the time.

PS4 will keep me busy, I'll pick this up a couple years from now.

"If only it had big wide-open areas with repetitive tedious goals like Sunshine."

I think Nintendo took the E3 critiques to heart.

Other than the improved graphics, I'm almost positive that everything else you listed was already in the game and they just hadn't shown it yet. I'm sure they thought a 4-player 3D Mario would be a bigger crowd pleaser than it actually ended up being, so they focused on that during E3 instead of the cool stuff they showed today.

I'm confident Donkey Kong will be great, too, but there's no hope for that abominable-looking Yoshi 3DS thing.

Did you just wake up or do you enjoy being reductive to the point of never being wrong?

And no, I'm not gonna write a list of every new mechanic so you can explain why they don't count.

But there are some. And they look cool.

You don't have to write a list and I agree with you that there are some new things going on. I'm just saying Nintendo used to do pretty radical shake ups of the Mario formula each iteration and I feel that recently all of the Mario titles have started to feel too samey. Even the music they have previewed so far is more in line with the forgettable music of the NSMB series and is nowhere near as iconic as anything from SM64 or Galaxy.

Lol stop buying consoles at launch... I think this is the lesson you should take away from this story...

Yes I have played 3D land (I actually love that game. It's great...as a handheld mario experience.)

I believe 3DS had a bigger installed base and Mario 3D land was the perfect title to demonstrate the hardware. I honestly don't believe this game will do much for sales. It move some units but not enough to move the needle. But we'll see.

In attempting to demonstrate incredible diversity and not "recycling the same fucking enemies," two of your three screenshots contain piranha plants.

Looking much better (in terms of single player content), although the game was largely impressive, from the get go.

Mario 3D Land is my all time favorite Mario game and by extension, this game looks to carry the tradition.

When Mario 3D Land was first shown off and demoed on 3DS (at events), there was skepticism and hesitation; we all know how the game ended up.

EAD Tokyo are fantastic developers and work magic with Nintendo hardware.

I expected a sequel. I expected it on 3DS. I expected (check post history) it would be called Mario 3D World. I didn't expect WiiU.

I have a WiiU, I'm most excited for this single game. This is the title, that FINALLY justifies the system, for me.

I do hope another installment arrives for 3DS as well.

Well, getting away from 64's controls, which I would agree with your assessment (for the most part, to say they are poor is just wrong), it really does just come down to personal preference. I really have nothing more to say on it--I really like full analogue control, and I dislike useless run buttons in analogue controlled games. I don't find it add to precision, I find it to be unnecessary. I have no problem walking slowly when I need to--I really do just like lightly pushing a stick to move slower. I feel the run button simplifies it too much and reduces the inherent complexities in movement.

If you prefer it in button form, then more power to you. We are pretty clearly at an impasse, so I see no further reason to argue it. You like what you like, I like what I like.

The run buttons there because some people will be using the sideways wiimote control and it needs a run button, so everything's working off the lowest common denominator.

Can someone remind of great looking holiday titles coming this year? Because right now I think this trailer propelled 3D World to the top of my holiday list. The variety... Simply amazing.

Not to go off topic but Tearaway looks amazing (too bad I don't have a Vita).

But yeah this game pretty much shot to the top of my most wanted list for this year as well.

I remembered when I showed my little brother the first trailer (he's 12 btw) and his reaction was pretty much," Well, looks okay I guess..." He was a big fan of 3D Land too, so seeing him underwhelmed like that was really something else.

Fast forward to today
I see the trailer when I'm at work and am amazed. I come home after work and tell him "I've got something to show you." We go to my computer and I pull up the trailer. He looks at the name of the trailer and says "Hey, isn't that that Wii U Mario game you showed me a while back?" "Yep" I replied. His face immediately almost looked tired, like he was prepared to be underwhelmed.

Then the trailer started...and his face pretty much went from this
to this
amazed-face.jpg

followed by him saying stuff like "Wow, that's awesome!" and "That's so cool"

And when the trailer was over he looked at me and said "Chad, hurry up and get that Wii U...I NEED TO PLAY THIS!!"

I really like the hub! notice that little secret entrance to the bush in the background.

I think it'll be really fun to explore!

Yeah, I like it too. They're trying something different that skews towards traditional but lets the player have fun. My fear of a repeat 3D Land "hub" has been dashed. Thank God.

Wat. Your complaints are not valid at all with this game though. Seriously wat. Have you played 3d land? Did you bother watching the trailer for 3d world?

I don't see how his complaints are invalid, though. I am currently an advocate of 3D World, I think it looks great, but even with all the gameplay originality there's throwing in here I don't think it's too completely out of the ballpark for people to wish for more diverse environments. The game takes place in a new kingdom, so why not deck it out and make it look completely original, ya know? Sunshine took place in Isle Delfino, so the whole game took on a beach aesthetic, for example.

I think the game is shaping up great and after seeing all this new gameplay I think the minimalist design suits it quite well, but there's nothing wrong with wanting something new aesthetically when every Mario game since NSMB has had the same looking worlds.

The run buttons there because some people will be using the sideways wiimote control and it needs a run button, so everything's working off the lowest common denominator.

I also feel that a run button makes it so they can have more precise platforming (not that you can't have that with analog stick mind you). It works great when the game is designed around it (3D Land), but obviously garbage when it's not designed around it (64 DS port is really bad with a run button)

Super Mario 64 was one of the first landmark polygonal titles.

You're not going to find a more visually revolutionary game, period. So it's kinda pointless (and daft) to expect this game to accomplish the same feat.

Can we at least get a fucking sequel instead of Galaxy 2, 3D land 2, and an ongoing stream of NSMB games?

Oh I know that part. That part is just bullshit. It's like removing analogue control from Smash Bros. to accommodate the Wii Remote only control scheme. Have the Wii Remote users double tap or something, or give the option of analogue running to those who don't use it. Don't have the lowest common denominator define everything.

EDIT: I will say the hub overworld is probably the coolest thing shown in the new trailer. Very Kirby's Adventure-esque, better than the bullshit they pulled in Galaxy 2 and 3D Land.

The trailer looked amazing to me. I can't wait to play it. Buying a Wii U for the (Japanese) Wii Fit U, Wii Party U, NSMBU back, but this will definitely also get picked up.

I remember being in awe when Mario 64 came out... but ultimately I never actually liked the game. The only "3D Mario" game I loved was Sunshine. I guess my tastes are different than those who are angry.

Also, 3D Land was my favorite Mario since Yoshi's Island.

Anyways, I'm happy and looking forward to get a Wii U now. Was really happy to see how the trailer looked last night.

But it was in 3D Land as well and everyone had a circle pad. Seems like it's a design choice.

I'm sure it's a concession that was palatable because it was done before.

Circle pads aren't analog sticks and I think it was as much of a concession there as it is here. In 3D Land, it was so you didn't push too hard and go flying off an edge.

But it also didn't bother me there so I'll live with it here.

Yeah, I have no problem with it either. 3D Land was pretty close to perfect, run button and all.

The problem here is that there's no incentive for Nintendo to go any further. Their sequels like Galaxy 2 get 9s and 10s. Why go for making a completely new game that deserves to get a 14 by rights when the scores are still capped at 10? Just relax and shit out another 10/10 game and call it a day.
