Super Mario 3D World: New Trailer

Maybe I'm just becoming worse at games as I get older (this is entirely possible), but Galaxy 2 seemed to me by far the most difficult 3D Mario game to-date.

Yeah, I can completely understand how a direct sequel, released a year after the original is harder, in fact it has to be harder, objectively.

I should re-focus, I'm just wondering if the launch of a new "brand" of 3D mario hasn't seen the difficulty drop each time. And whether this title will feature a significant drop in challenge.

My first play through of Galaxy 1, although filled with joy and bewilderment was very very easy.

That would be a solution, sounds about right.

But not the ideal which is a focused challenge curve rom the outset for a managed and increasing challenge with fresh world imagery and no remix/revisit fatigue that I feel can set in (personally).

It was a nice curve in 3D Land I felt. It was like 16 worlds. It's a bit easy but I feel like a pretty masterful Mario player at this point in my life.

Ok so everyone gave me shit for hating on this game after the E3 trailers and what not.

Its still not what I wanted for the first true WiiU Mario game...

But this looks alot better than I originally thought. Im much more excited after seeing this trailer than anything else ive seen out of the game before.

I agree with the other guy that Sunshine is the hardest to 100%. It's my favorite in the series, but they're all amazing.

Welp.

I'm actually really excited to play Wind Waker again, and Nintendo land wasn't bad for $15 used.

Up until now I was looking forward to Sonic Lost world more then this game. That trailer has changed this. I'm still getting S:LW but right now SM3DW looks more promising.

Well, I suppose we'll just have to wait and see! I don't think it's deniable really that 3D Land is the easiest 3D Mario game (except for the final bonus level which was fucking insane), so who knows, you might be on to something. But a pattern of one isn't a pattern.

By the way, SMG2 was released 3 years after SMG!

Ok, I'm sure someone else has put this in way better words than me. But holy shit, Nintendo have mastered lighting on the Wii U. What is the special sauce they use to get such gorgeous lighting? It's the same kind seen in Mario Kart 8 and in some spots of Nintendo Land. That look of bright light hitting different surfaces and the clean, sharp as hell shadows. I don't know how to explain it, but it looks so good and it's all over the place in this trailer.

This looks absolutely amazing! I was wholly un-hyped for the game (and not considering a WiiU until next year, if that).

I do not intend this to be a statement against Nintendo, just my personal tastes. I'm happy everyone else is excited.

Unfortunately this game is the exact reason why I have decided to skip a Nintendo generation (at least so far). I am just tired of the same theme and general gameplay premise of Mario.

Mario, in my opinion, is the COD / Halo of Nintendo gaming. Both are fun times but they have become the same thing to me. I'm also tired of COD / Halo / dudebro shooters the same way.

I just want something different. I know they have tried with things like Wonderful 101 and it looks interesting, just not the type of game I generally go for so maybe X will be enough for me to change my decision on Nintendo this generation.

Wonderful 101 is the answer.

This game is throwing dozens of new things, I don't know what you are talking about. Unless you just don't like 3D platformers period, which would be a shame.

He's tired of the run-and-jump-man gaem. It's completely understandable. He'll take a generation off to recuperate. Maybe replay Xenogears or Mass Effect 3or something in the meantime.

I don't know if you're joking but I love those games! ME3 had a pretty weak ending but the ride was awesome.

But I think it's a combination of being tired of the run and jump game, and just the same setting / theme. I also really like to have a story to engage me past the gameplay. I'm also just tired of the same characters for 25+ years.

I personally do not see the difference between the incremental changes in Mario to a series like COD / Halo. Maybe a generation break from both types of games will do me some good.

Sorry about derailing the thread, just wasn't sure where it would be best to voice my displeasure with another Mario game.

EDIT - And just so we're on the same page, I made a thread a month or 2 ago how Mario 64 was the greatest launch title ever.

It still looks like 3D land HD, which is perfectly fine with me considering 3D Land had better levels than the galaxy games.

I don't understand why people can call 64 vast compared to games like 3D World. One level in this game is probably the size of an entire world in 64 if not bigger lol.

People really overestimate the size of Mario 64 worlds.

I mean, take Whomp's fortress for instance

You have the top platform, the cage, a ramp, a rotating platform, a cannon, some piranha plants, and the flagpole.

only 5 or 6 of the levels were actually "big"

Finally watched the trailer. Damn, it looks awesome! I was exceptical with this (even knowing 3D Land was incredible, my favorite Mario game in years) but this might have the potencial to be even better!

As a jazz fan I really dig the big band swing soundtrack in this trailer. Hope the whole game as a similar sound.

Totally agree! I found myself humming the song. Now all can i do, is hope all the goes to the Big Band style.

I am not saying this in an accusatory or inflammatory way, because I'm genuinely curious. These games aren't my cup of tea anyway, so I'm fairly ignorant.

I would love to see a list of the "incremental" changes in a Call of Duty game alongside a list of "incremental" changes in a 3D Mario game.

It's all good. You're just not in the mood for it.

There probably isn't a single level in SM3DW that is smaller than this entire world. If they went and designed their levels like this nowadays, people would scream that the game is being artificially inflated. Why you gotta re-use the same level 6 times, Nintendo? Isn't 8M~ copies enough sales to make a real game? It's not the '90s!

I think I've watched this trailer 5 or 6 times today. Can't wait to get my hands on this.

The main theme is extremely catchy, too.

I think I've watched 15x ...

Yeah, look at 1:56. That level looks huge.

I can see why people think it looks smaller, because the camera movement is so much more steamlined and automated now. But some of the new levels are still going to be big. Maybe more linear in a sense, but still big.

I'm just imagining the 4 characters are in the middle of dodging fireballs and bullet bills, and one of them says "Why the hell are we jumping around platforms, over spikes, why are these mushrooms out to get us, what the hell have we gotten ourselves into?..." and one of them has to go "Don't ask questions, just go with it." The music's got a "What the hell are we doing?...Just go with it" sound to it. It just oozes fun.

I thought Sunshine was MUCH more difficult than Either 64 or Galaxy if we are talking about 100% completion. Anyway, let's just enjoy this awesome looking game.

Toad messing up everyone's fun off day.

You know what stands out most to me in this (amazing) gif? The animations. The goombas' reaction to Toad jumping in the water looks almost Pixar.

Nostalgia really clouds peoples judgements of the actual levels in SM64.

this trailler looked incredibly incredibly incredibly fun! Im glad i always have 4 people to play this game with when i get it

I lol'ed at the goomba suit scene.

The trailer certain got me more excited. I was most looking forward to Donkey Kong in terms of WiiU exclusive, but this looks good. I didn't like 3D land at all though, so I'll have to wait and see.

Ehh, zooming that far out kind of changes the perspective quite a bit. The level does feel large when you're at ground level and controlling Mario and navigating the level.

Pretty sure you've been saying this for the last decade, Tabris. You were never really on board the Gamecube, Wii or DS either. Not really anything new here lol

After the incredibly "meh" E3 reveal, this looks so much better. Went from "might purchase it someday if I don't have anything left" to Day one purchase. This should have been the reveal trailer.

Quick question for someone whose trying to avoid watching more footage. Do we know whether the levels/worlds are like 3D Land where there were multiple different themed levels in a world (Like having an ice level and grass level in a desert themed world), or are they more like 2D mario games where levels follow the world theme?
