Super Mario Galaxy & The Wind Garden Music

Threi said:
You guys really need to go and listen to the Chrono Cross OST. The sountrack ranges from this to this for goddsakes.

The game is UNMATCHED in music.

Eh, it's good. But if you've heard one Mitsuda track, you've heard em all.

Nah, very few of CC's songs can match the many, many CT songs that rocked hard. Trigger crushes Cross, IMHO. Cross does, however, feature the greatest opening theme ever. For the most part.

Well then we are going to have to agree to disagree then. Because for me CC's music crushes CT's (which is a bit over SMG right now).

And on top of that CC is my favorite game of all time (yes, even over CT) so hey im probably not the most unbiased person in the world in that area =P

Well it's not my favorite game, but I still think its OST can't be denied.

Seriously people, go listen to this:

on a small sidenote, I think this TP track has been immensely overlooked and underrated

at 01.05 it becomes Star Wars meets Indiana Jones meets Zelda meets Jesus. What an amazing piece of orchestra here. 110% epic, and as good as Wind Garden (if not better)
Too bad it was like the only orchestrated song in the game.

Me and Beef, we are on the same page here.

If only they could have somehow implemented that into the actual game considering it was better than anything in the game.

The trailer was so good that the game let me down.

This was my personal fave and they only played it once in the whole game:

yep. What a dumb decision to include one of the best tracks of the last years in a effing pre-intro trailer, and keep it confined there

Looks like all of my favorite tracks have already been mentioned numerous times already...so, here are some of what I think are the underrated, sort of hidden gems of this soundtrack :

- Into The Galaxy (the theme you hear when you finally leave the Gateway Planetoid and get into action. "Wow" moment)

- To the Gateway (Gateway Galaxy Theme)

- Get Star Chance (when the Star is ready to be grabbed, sweet)

- Cosmos Illusion (kind of ethereal theme you can hear thoughout the game)

- Megaleg (tripod boss theme)

- Teardrop

- Family (piano version of Rosalina's theme, beautiful)

- The Wish ( :[ )

- Birth (beautiful track, at very end of the game. A large part of this track - the best part- is actually not present in the game IIRC)

Oh God, I love this game. I would immediately replay it and try to finish it for the fourth time if I hadn't lent it already...Dumb me :( .

well it's not actually completely new. sounds like a mixture of old and new things. but the first time (for me atleast) to hear it fully realized ingame, nice arrangement, fully orchestrated etc.
yea, it's pretty awesome.

edit: of course it's the classic tunes mixed with new.

Out of all of the songs posted in this thread, I still haven't heard anything better than Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger, Star Fox or just about any great SNES game's music.

Fire Emblem 4 opening theme ftw.

I disagree, but I have to give props to someone who also realizes that complete and utter awesomeness that is the original Star Fox soundtrack. In my opinion, it's infinitely better than any of the Star Fox music that has come after it. I wonder what Hirasawa has been doing these days?

Final Fantasy 7 and 8, Chrono Cross, Ocarina of Time, and Metroid Prime are all just as good IMO.

And you left Final Fantasy 6 out of your list of great SNES music.

I don't know why the frig Nintendo would go through such lengths to make such fuck awesome music and not incorporate it in the game.

It's good but I can never recall the melody when I'm not playing the game. Sunshine, Mario 64, World and SMB3 all have infectiously easy-to-remember themes. Unfortunately Galaxy does not.

I catch myself humming the Delfino Plaza them a lot, and I haven't even played Sunshine all that much.

I didn't find Galaxy's music to be all that mind-melting, but it is good. That Good Egg Galaxy tune (used in the first real trailer) is probably the most memorable for me.

I'll agree with one exception:

Mitsuda's regular battle themes still suck.

when I first played Chrono Cross, I was of the opinion that the Chrono Trigger OST was far better than the Chrono Cross OST... but when i continued to listen to it, it grew on me and now it's up there with CT.... while it may not be as "heartwarming" as the CT OST was, Chrono Cross is definitely one of the best game OSTs ever. favorite Chrono Cross song: http://youtube.com/watch?v=wMntblDX0Bg

and... on topic... Mario Galaxy's OST is freaking amazing. I loves it.

I think that is because the previous Mario's had more simplistic, catchy "ditties", as opposed to the epic, sweeping songs in Galaxy. Although, I can definitely recall the Gusty Garden theme when I think about it.

It's just about my favourite soundtrack!

Well I can recall Buoy Base and Battlerock galaxy...I mean people can remember Dancing Mad verse for verse and do a pretty accurate rendition just by humming or whistling. I dunno if it has to do with simplicity as far as memorization goes. Its probably just what hits you with that certain "feeling".

I really like the NiGHTS Journey of Dreams soundtrack too. So many great soundtracks in games lately.

Heres a couple other ridiculously catchy themes I have come to love

FF4 battle theme
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=nyFMYS_oZHk&feature=related

CHrono Trigger- Robos theme
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=eOWf_T0jdgQ

Megaman 3 title theme :D
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=1_Mm4FMA3ks

Little Nemo Dream MasteR: Mushroom Forest
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=vxnJ7mBrEAk

Thanks for reminding me!

The Ultimate Boss battle theme

This one track alone is what made me REALLY start liking VG music. I mean Megaman and Sonic were catchy before...but this...wow :D

That along with FFIX, VIII, and VII's boss battle music were some of the most urgent sounding battle themes EVER. Really has a "Damn, everyone is depending on me!" tone to it.

What makes the Galaxy music so perfect is how it fits so well with the game. It's not exactly as catchy as some of the tunes in older Mario games, but hearing these themes again makes me remember exactly how I felt as I played through those segments. The music really felt like it was part of the gameplay somehow. Amazing job.

Out of all the game music mentioned in this thread, I will add the OG music from Street Fighter 2. It's not gonna win any awards and has nothing on stuff from those Square games. But from a purely catchy and memorable standpoint, those themes are immediately recognizable and VERY strong

Ken and Zangief stage ftw.

EDIT: Is there an up to date VG composition appreciation thread? If not, there should be.

I'm not impressed with the Chrono Cross tracks linked. I'm sure it's an excellent game, but I haven't played it.

I don't think it's all that presumptious to say that sound in SMG is quite an achievement if you read and know about the game's extensive sound design.

Galaxy's music is fucking mindblowingly good. It's a real notch above anything Mario in the last...god knows how long.
