Super Mario Galaxy & The Wind Garden Music

Slightly OT, but I never really understood the hate for NSMB's soundtrack, I thought it captured the spirit of the original Super Mario Bros. music perfectly. Plus how can you hate enemies that move and jump to the beat of the music?

There were a couple good songs, true. But does it even remotely compare with SMB2 or SMB3? C'mon man. Part of the reason it has so much hate is because of the greatness that came before it, which is also why SMG's soundtrack will also stand the test of time.

I would be fine with that, but, at least in the posts I have seen, it's more "Bioshock actually had a score?" or "SMG is on a whole other level; Bioshock winning is a disgrace," not "Both are great but I prefer Galaxy."

Okay, yeah then nevermind. :P

I think there was probably one good track in the game, and that was the main castle theme. Everything else was bland, forgettable tripe. Worst music out of the main Mario games by far.

Whaaa? The overland level and beach level songs were catchy as hell, and each piece did an excellent job of capturing the setting of the level in which they took place. The underwater music and the castle music in particular were highly reminiscent of the tunes from the original SMB, not to mention the underground music which was a remix of the SMB1 underground music. Anyone who hates on NSMB's soundtrack simply doesn't understand what Mario music is about -- simple, catchy tunes that do an excellent job of complementing the setting of each level.

The underground theme was decent, but that was a remix of a good song, so it'd be hard for even Atsuta Ota to fudge up. But the underwater music was garbage, dude. Dunno what to say.

Seems the composer didn't understand either. :/

Listening to this music makes me want to play the game again. ;_;

Me too, and I've already finished it twice!

Damn Xbox 360 games need finishing first before I can return to it.

Well you'd have to be pretty ignorant if you can't hear the influence of the original SMB soundtrack in NSMB's music, especially in the underwater music, which is pretty much a slowed down version of the underwater music in SMB1.

Oh, I'm fully aware of the influence of SMB. That doesn't mean it was accomplished well.

Super MArio Galaxy IS one of the greatest videogame soundtracks of all time. Whether it is your personal favorite or not is the hting thats subject to debate. but theres really no way to suggest that this music is anything less than extraordinary, especially for a platformer. I mean seriously...

I'm in love with NSMB, too. I think it's the best of the traditional sidescrollers, and it's music is quite fitting for what it was trying to accomplish. I think it captures that "cheerful spunk" of Super Mario. I really, really like the Brawl arrangement of the Mushroom Kingdom Overworld theme:

my favorite SMG themes in order:

Gusty Garden
Star Festival
First Steps
Buoy Base
Good Egg
Battlerock
Prologue (star story)
Observatory (5/6 stars)

These are my top favorites, but really, I liked almost every theme in the entire game.
On a technical level, no, Super Mario Galaxys OST isnt the best. It isnt very complex or difficult to play. It isnt fitting for a movie soundtrack depthwise nor will it ever be as fully epic as some of the best RPG music. What it is though is absolutely and 100% UNFORGETTABLE. This music sticks with you, and thats why its amazing. Just the mere thought of some of this music puts a huge grin on your face, and thats why its one of the greatest soundtracks ever.

LOL at the "this music isn't good because there is no story behind it"

That's too influencied by Orhcestral music = OST music = I'm watching a film, so tell me a story damn you thx.

Music is ABSTRACT, you know?

Let's do a little experiment.

I can put two diferent persons who never played SMG, one with SMG and one with a cooking game. And the two of them with the song Comet Observatory (5-6 grand stars), or the music Under Attack with SMG and with a medieval War Game.

I can assure you the two of them will tell the music is perfectly suited for the game. Why? Because music doesn't tell you any specific things. It doesn't tell any story. You BUILD that story when you hear the music. The composer may try to transmit something but in the end only feelings can be transmited, and that's the first rule you must know when you're writting music. You can't transmit something specific because you're not going to interpret your music. It's your listener who's going to do it.

By the way,

Credits theme > ALL :D

Original. The DKC series all had EXCELLENT music.
I used to have a SNES when I was about 12 years old. I bought it from a friend who just got his N64. I just took over all his SNES games too, and never bought any other. Dumb dumb dumb. All those great games I've missed. :/ Since I connect the SNES graphics to Super Mario Allstars (it's the game I always played), it's so strange to see gorgious games like Donkey Kong Country were also possible on that little system.

Am I the only person who thinks the majority of SMG's music would fit better in a Zelda game? I just get a Zelda-vibe everytime I hear SMG's OST.

neh I thought it fit into SMG just fine. It does wet one's appetite for a Zelda game that gets the same orchestrated treatment.

Naaah, it's just that orchestrated music fits better in a Zelda game. All SMG music is still very happy and upbeat, while Zelda fits the more dramatic ones.

God I hope the next Zelda is all orchestrated. Imagine what they could make of all the classic Zelda tunes (+ create new ones). :D

I agree with that. It's just that there's such a big shift when it comes to SMG's music compared to past Mario games. Eh, maybe the shift suited the game well due to the new makeover in the gameplay deptartment.

Man, I can't wait to see what Nintendo cooks up for the new Zelda game and I hope the SMG team develops the game. :D

SMG floored me with its stunning music. That said, I wouldn't really consider the topic of this thread to be even close to my favorite song from this game.

It's funny how it goes from Zelda TP, one of the worst nintendo soundtracks ever to one of the best ever in SMG.

NiGHTS Journey of Dreams impressed me more with it's music. Fantastic stuff.

"the original just incase people were wondering.

The remix is good, but it has NOTHING on the original."

wow. that's pretty much amazing.

Not even close. Chrono Cross wipes the floor with this.

I don't know. I think Galaxy is pretty darn close. Although, it could just be because Galaxy is new and (if such a thing were possible) I think my Chrono Cross MP3s are starting to degrade from overuse.

They're both the best in their field though.

Agreed, I don't know If I'll ever find a soundtrack as good as Chrono Cross's, The SMG soundtrack was good, but not Chrono Cross good.
