Super Mario Odyssey Announced (Holiday 2017)

so basically the next ten months are going to be

"The art is bad."
"No actually it is good."
"No it is bad and thus the game is bad."
"Hey this new trailer showed cool things."
"My original opinion on the art has not changed and people arguing with me have entrenched me further in my position."
"I am overly defensive and cannot enjoy a game if people are talking poorly of it."
"Let's both argue over this subject of which we will never possibly persuade the other person while we make the same reductive arguments we have seen other people make before."

No, since people only dislike the city part.

Just rewatched the trailer again.

I can't stand it. It is SM3DW without the locked camera with maybe slightly larger levels (SM3DW levels were quite large but they were built up by smaller, interconnecting sections).

It's the exact same engine.
That lion is the new Plessy.
Bowser is exactly the same.
The Bullet Bills are exactly the same.
Kicking the enemies is the same.
The expanding 'noise' rings are the same.

It's seriously SM3DW 2 with an unlocked camera.

Why isn't this coming to Wii U?

Super disappointing.

This is good satire.

I wish the environments had more stylized visuals. Both the city and the forest area look too realistic looking for my liking. It really clashes with the character designs

I have mixed feelings about this. I was enthusiastic about the idea, I like it in principle, but there seems to be such a mix of styles and ugliness with beauty that might make it unplayable.

Honestly at this point it looks like "my first UE4 project with Mario" more than a Nintendo Mario 3d game.

In some parts it looks ugly even for Wii U.

Is this some Wii reborn projects or what?

Quite the reactions to the city part. Honestly I like the fact mario stands out like a sore thumb and looks hilariously out of place in it. Seems like that what they were going for.

The city looks like it's out of a sega game, I mean that as a compliment. The other environments look amazing.

Lack of AA it seems? Nintendo art is soo good but wish they smooth out their jaggies, it would really give it that cg animated movie look.

I think the idea of this game is Mario is going to worlds/dimensions that differ greatly from ones to which he is accustomed. It's meant to be jarring and different
That's neat and all, but why would Mario ever want to travel back to Sonic '06?

It's not that it looks different. It's that it looks like shit.

Yeah. Everyone's focusing on the city part but the ice desert and food stage look much more in line with what to expect from Mario. If the whole game was full of realistic humans I wouldn't be happy, but the game has some self awareness about it. Self awareness that Sonic's real world adventures never had.

Hmmmmm, after combing through the trailer a few more times, the mechanics look wonderful, and Mario's animations are seriously great, especially the roll and full speed run, but I'm not feeling the visual design of any of the levels they've shown here, except maybe the desert at night. It actually does look like they're going for an updated take on Mario 64's hodgepodge of subdued, sometimes oddly dark styles, but I don't know if that's a part of Mario 64 people wanted back. I'm sure the game will be great, but ehhhhhh

And again, the city environment here is.... not good, to say the least. I get the clash of Mario in a realistic setting but... nah.

In New Donk City there is an ad with this building and "KOGWALD"

This same building is encountered in-person in this world:

Where you also encounter the rabbit koopaling things...

It's a weird world with red machinery and green vegetation inside some kind of glass dome. And outside the dome is a snowy wasteland.

This is the kind of thing that bugs me. The part of New Donk City you can explore is this really small segment surrounded by a cliffs and a 100 story drop on all sides. They can do a better job of hiding barriers than that.

I didn't expect to see such a detailed looking city in Mario... wha? Looks amazing! Almost photo realistic and out of place for Mario.
Some other landscapes are really cartoony (like the desert stage).
Why is Bowser dressed like a compere or showman? Why does Mario's hat have eyes?
This does look good (if weird) and could be a really fun game.

Does everyone in the trailer have a hat on?

Seems sort of like it could be new catsuit or raccoon tail (from NSMB2) where like everyone gets the mechanic they are trying to push.

I wonder if Mario will meet Odysseus

The game looks awesome!

I'm not really shy about my disinterest and (slight) dislike of sandbox-style 3D Mario games on this forum, but this definitely looks fun, imaginative, and whimsical like a Mario game should.
I'm intrigued, I'll most likely get it.
Hopefully it'll tide me over until they decide to shift back to the more linear platform-heavy SMB-style 3D Mario games again.
These phases seem to come and go.
:P
Btw Those realistic humans next to Mario look absolutely dreadful. What a terrible choice in art direction.
I was really hoping that the first appearance of other humans in a Mario platformer would be cute and cartoony like Luigi, Peach, or Mario himself.
:/
No, they simply said it's the first large sandbox style game since 64 and Sunshine. They did not validate any weird "those games don't count as REAL 3D Mario" hangups.

As someone who's been driven away from 3D Mario discussions by that "REAL 3D Mario™, herp derp" idiocy (seriously, why do gamers have to be so damn annoying?) it's VERY satisfying to hear Nintendo themselves specifically throw 64 and Sunshine into their own category. Sandbox-style Mario games.
It fits, it makes sense.

City humans were a little jarring, but I think that's the point. I thought it looked amazing and I'm so hyped to play it. It looks really fun to just run around and jump and stuff.

Then... wha... WTF? Some other landscapes are really cartoony.
Why is Bowser dressed like a compere or showman? Why does Mario's hat have eyes?
This does look good (if weird).

Bowser is dressed as a groom. There are signs in the game advertising his marriage to Peach with Peach wearing a wedding gown.

Because apparently he's marrying Peach again

I agree, but this game's still a while off. Also, look at all that construction on the right of New Donk City

Here comes the deep lore

Feels like people are really missing the point with this complaining about an uncohesive art style and how the city part is especially bad. All of the worlds look fucking weird in their own way. This is obviously supposed to be some Alice in Wonderland / Mario's Strange Journey type of thing. It's meant to be bizarre, and not in the tame Galaxy kind of way which still had beach and lava worlds only with a space background. This looks exciting to me.

You do realize the city is a hub right? It's like Mushroom Kingdom on 64.

What does that have to do with anything? You put tunnels you can't enter at the ends of every street and wall off the hub with buildings too tall to climb over. You don't surround a couple of city blocks with a bottomless void.

I don't mind New Donk City like some do but I think they should have made all the people "Mario-ish" rather than relatively realistic looking.

Otherwise I loved what I saw. I loved the hat ability, the rolling, the environments. The game looks like a joy to explore.

New Donk City? lmao

Having regular ass people walk around in a Mario game is pretty odd, but nothing I won't get used to. Jumping between skyscrapers seems fun and I like the Goombas wearing construction helmets

That's fine it can still look bad despite intentions

Perhaps Crazy Cap is like a sentient, transforming hat that Mario is sponsoring. Kind of like a pet hat.

It's so popular that it's taking each of the worlds that Mario explores by storm.

Having finally watched the trailer, I'm more surprised that the forest isn't the sticking point for most people rather than the city. It really feels off to me.

Still wanna play it of course.

This looks amazing. I love it, finally the type of 3D Mario I personally prefer. Not sure how I feel about the normal proportion humans though. That kind of reminds me of those godawful Alvin movies or the live action Smurfs adaption.

I was incredibly disappointed with the event and Switch overall but this is what blew me away the most. Looks like SM64 on steroids and I love it.

I'm 100% on board with everything I saw. This blew me away while I was watching the presentation. I had the same reaction as the E3 Breath of the Wild trailer. This is going to be a goooooood year.

So, New Donk City. Americans living in a city controlled by an animal who lives in a tower and thinks he can get away with abusing women ?
Nintendo going all in. Mario coming from Mexico hub to kick his ass.

The Anti Aliasingis terrible like horrible in this game. The game looks crazy good tho. I have little faith tho that they can fix it. The consoles weakness is really apparent.
