Super Mario Odyssey Announced (Holiday 2017)

I love the look of the City part.

It's weird. Really weird. But that's the reason, surely? I don't think the sort of robotic, vague blandness of the human characters is accidental by any means. If anything they should look completley faceless and plastic like the Wii trainers, just to up the weird some more.

This screenshot is great and for me perfectly captures all the weird disconnect between Mario and this world they need to. This is such an "oh I get it!" screen grab.

I don't mind New Donk City like some do but I think they should have made all the people "Mario-ish" rather than relatively realistic looking.

Otherwise I loved what I saw. I loved the hat ability, the rolling, the environments. The game looks like a joy to explore.

I think the POINT is that it looks off and surreal. It's a New York world you visit, probably the only city type level.

Newsflash: MARIO isn't a human , he's a cartoon video game character. The idea here is that bowser has some how crossed into the human world, basically across dimensions, and Mario has to stop him.

I think it looks great, and a nice departure from previous games in the series. I'm even more excited that it's not another "new" super mario title.

This looks like a proper follow up to galaxy

Having finally watched the trailer, I'm more surprised that the forest isn't the sticking point for most people rather than the city. It really feels off to me.
It nearly all looks off, it looks like those horrendous "Mario in Unreal engine" videos. Not only the game doesn't attract me at all, but I'll probably pass on the whole console, and I loved the Wii and liked the GameCube and Wii U a lot.

I was talking about the Sonic 2006 joke.
It's a perfectly relevant comparison, it nails what's wrong with this game.

A human world called "New Donk City" with Mario world objects everywhere. Brilliant work, Detective. I'd say no. NDC is probably still part of his universe.

On topic:

I gotta say, the NDC part of the game looks like really, really bad fanfiction. Mario looks like an actual midget next to people, and I'd say the parcour part of the game in the city will get extremely repetitive after a while, so I don't see any added benefit. Just my two cents :-/

Loved all games since the first NES Mario, but I think I'm gonna skip this one.

I don't know... I think it looks awesome. The city might feel a bit disconnected from everything else, but I liked it. Wonder how the city fits into the story...

Ehh, I must be one of the few people who really loved the city area. And I totally see what they were going for with the "normal humans". It's like each individual area is defined by their different race of inhabitants, to show the different universes Mario travels through in his Odyssey. Thus the idea is to make it all seem varied and clashing with Mario, like the robots, the Mexican skulls, or the weird glass vegetables are. That's the point of having normal humans: what if one of the universes that Mario visits is our own?

I loved everything I saw about the trailer. A lot of it are wishes I've had for a long time for Mario games, and the sheer variety and weirdness in a small trailer beats anything 3D world has shown in the entire game. The only thing I didn't like much was their music choice. I'd rather have a more 'epic' sounding music.

I always thought Mario was human.
Guess not lol.

I always thought he was human in the sense that he's not a furry animal (like Donkey Kong or Sonic for instance), but not human in the sense that Lara Croft or Duke Nukem, etc are.

I don't see how people could look at him and imagine him as a real life plumber, jumping and going wahoo everywhere. He is impossibly cutesy to be a regular human.

Maybe they named the city after the hugely popular "Donkey Kong" series of video games :p

Haha what the fuck kind of nonsense argument is this? Yes Mario is a human. He is also a cartoon. They are not mutually exclusive.

Weird. A few nice looking areas and some jarringly bad ones. Mario 2006 seems entirely apropos. Actually, dude brought up Sunshine himself, but there are weirdos on here who like that game.

Very different in a lot of ways but I like the look of it. I've been itching for another open world-ish Mario game for a while since 64/Sunshine.

I think it's cool.

Here's a question for Gaf -What other countries/locations from our world should they borrow from?

Tokyo or China (particularly New Year) at night would be incredible.

I think it's cool, too. It's just an awkward aspect of the whole scene, haha.

V excited for the game, don't get me wrong. Sounds like a really interesting direction to take the series/franchise in.

And this also seems not to be what I was expecting.

I didn't like to see Mario running and jumping in an "real-word" grey scenario, mixing him and "real people" designs, which makes him looks like a cartoon plumber dwarf.

Was expecting something more in the lines with Mario 64... Oh wel...

I'll be honest, when I first saw that realistic world with those awkward looking people walking around and then the manhole cover started rumbling... I thought Sonic was going to jump out and the camera would pan up to reveal Sonic Adventure 3. When it turned out to be Mario, I was dumbstruck, and not in a positive way. I'm glad there are multiple worlds, but man, if that doesn't look like a disjointed mess of gameplay and artistic styles.

I understand it's a bit abrasive, but I like how the art's actually a bit inconsistent here. I really like how the direction seems to be different between worlds (classic style Desert, Forest with more realistic shaders, uber uncanny City-scape, bonkers 3d gamey realm). Hopefully Nintendo both has fun with it, and goes truly wild.

This looked awesome. I'm hoping the city is like the hub world in the same way that the castle functioned in Mario 64. I can just imagine jumping down into a sewer in the city and being transported to some crazy Mario-based sewer level.

This was just straight up crazy. At first it seemed like maybe Mario was going to real world places, but then he went to vegetable land and rode a sphinx. The variety of moves at Mario's disposal is impressive, and the hat mechanic could lead into some interesting gameplay mechanics. I'm excited, Mario always delivers (except for NSMB 2).

The more I watch the trailer, this really looks like the pseudo open world heavy exploration Mario game I've dreamed of since 64. It's like with sunshine they expanded on the exploration driven platformer concept of 64 , and then after that they just forgot about it (and still released some fantastic games of course; just not in this vein). This looks to be bringing that back and expanding on it in a really big way, and it's glorious.

The jarring art styles are intentional. I'd bet money that there'll be a much more positive reaction to the visuals overall once people are actually sitting down and playing the game.

As someone who has preferred the direction 3D Mario went in after Super Mario Sunshine, where the games went to a greater focus on tight platforming/jumping sequences rather than a focus on roaming wide areas, I thought this was pretty disappointing.

It's too early to pass too much judgement on it, but I have to say, it feels like the people who'd rather have 3D Mario be more about walking/roaming than obstacle clearing are getting their wish.

I hope there's a tribute to the original Mario Bros. game in this.

But also I hope for a deadly serious cutscene in which it turns out Pauline thought Mario was dead and she remarried and has two kids now

I assume Donk (hehe) City is the hub, given it's size. The game looks absolutely crazy and I love it. Open world plaforming, finally

Are there gonna be raptors in this game? at 1:33 in this video i see a tail move behind a tree just left of center on the screen, anyone else see this?

Could this be the Dark Forest backdrop from Super Mario Bros. 3 (All-Stars Version)?

And if New Kong City is a 3D version of the world of the original DK game, and there's a SMB2-inspired level...

...could this game be a 3D odyssey through strange worlds from Mario's 2D past?
