Super Meat Boy for WiiWare cancelled.

In this thread, people are mocked because they expected a game announced as an "exclusive" on their plateform to be actually release on their plateform.

:lol :lol :lol

So you're saying that extra levels aren't related to file size?
Extra levels can be DLC.

Is that really what you've taken from this thread?

Honestly, it's probably for the best. SMB on the Wii would have gotten terrible word of mouth. The game is far too hard for the average Wii owner.

I don't think the game would've been exactly the problem.

MHTri did fine, and it's a hard (albeit different hard) game.

What? SMB is also far far too difficult for, say, the average PC owner.

I personally think that wii has had the best 2d plat formers of last two generation. some of them are quite hard. They all start easy though than get harder as the game goes along.SMB would have been fine.

you guys are.. pretty crazy. Its not really hard to see where he's coming from.

I mean i know what youre saying technomancer, but with "average wii owner" he probably refers to non-gamers, to the family audience and such. And yet it moves and fluidity are fine, but SMB ? yeah, i can see how it wouldnt sell so great.

As for crazy monkey well, that's just insane, you cant compare any platformer released on the wii ever to Super Meat Boy in terms of difficulty. People were saying DKC returns was too hard for christ sake.

Donkey Kong Country Returns is quite hard yet it sold a lot around the world.
I don't see how SMB won't, especially since you can skip stages (I am looking at you you 5-8X)

DKCR has a different appeal. Its and old franchise, its charming, it has a kiddie look.

SMB is a different beast, its a new IP, gore here and there, etc

DKCR was harder than i expected after a game like Epic Yarn (although they are completely different things, but you get the point), but it was not frustrating by any chance.

I mean really comparing a Donkey Kong game with Super Meat Boy sales-wise is pretty weird, tons of more reasons why you cant really compare them.

Honestly, I don't think that it would have sold well on the Wii. The Wiiware platform gets no publicity, and the people that would have known about the game otherwise probably have some other means to experience the game.
The Team Meat guys are already incredibly busy with fixing bugs, releasing the level editor, and other things. Releasing on the Wii would just not be worth it IMO.

Suprise! Nintendo games sell quite well on Nintendo consoles.

Yeah, but SMB doesn't appeal to your "average x owner" anyway. Soooo.

I think its really appealing for indie PC gaming enthusiasts, wich is a much higher number of sales than wiiware fans.

The average Wii owner doesn't have their console hooked up to the internet, so I'm not sure how that factors into anything in terms of potential WiiWare sales. ;)

Well, that really is terrible word of mouth then!

Oh definately. I'm not saying it would sell more on Wii. Especially since it would be the worst version in an dead ecosystem.

But difficulty wouldn't be the offput.. Unless people expect to their moms to buy the game. And surprise, there are more than moms.

Yeah, that's what I mean.

I'll go one step further and say that the average Wii owner probably doesn't know that it's possible to connect the Wii to this "internet" in the first place.

That's one hell of a lot of Wii points wasted..

My flatmates were surprised to hear that Mario Kart had online multiplayer. They were even more so when I hopped online on Goldeneye.

No, it's true. Not many people know the Wii can connect to the internet, less have even tried.

But hopefully those Netflix Wii TV ads will do something.

Awesome, I didn't know the N64 could do that.

I'm sure they will, Billy, I'm sure they will.

I think they should spend more time promoting the Everybody Votes channel, that is some cutting edge shit.

"We knew of the limits early on but overestimated our ability to get Nintendo to raise the file size," McMillen said. "It's lame that there is a 40MB cap on WiiWare games ... but it was our fault for blindly assuming this cap wasn't set in stone, and we are sorry for that." McMillen added that the team's finances would take a hit after the file-size showdown, but it wouldn't wither their support of Nintendo platforms in the future.
Now reading that post by Killthee makes it clear that the dev made a foolish move if they really wanted the game on WiiWare.

Not getting it on WiiWare first might be the best thing to happen to this game though. I say that because many great WiiWare games are almost totally ignored by the game press and get little to no hype. I think this game size limit story , which is great for Wii bashing ( no I'm not saying that is what the dev is doing but it does make a great Wii bashing topic and have news great for bashing a console carries better than positive news), also helps the game get more coverage.
The coverage will be carried futher by the game being so great. So in all it worked out for the best.

It's kinda fucked up that XBLA/PSN allow for games with production values/scope close to Wii retail games, but Wiiware doesn't even allow for a worthy port of one of the smaller arcade games.

Should I have taken the fact that neogaffers think that the "average wii owner" doesn't know what a video game is ?

Wii have sold multi millions of 2D plateformers in the last five years, so I think the wii owners are able to take the challenge...

They knew the limitations but expect Nintendo to make an exception to the rule ? Did they also expect Nintendo to add another button on the Wiimote for them ?
I'll stop there, I don't want to be too harsh with them, their game seems really nice, and I'm sure the limitations are hard to reach for a 2men team...
I'll wait for the mac release, but I'm kinda sad I won't be able to play it in my tv, like I imagine I'll do when I discover this game a year and a half ago.

Given what i have seen, i am guessing this game is probably a lot too hard for the average 360 owners too.

I will get the pc version whenever I am done with DKCR and Two World 2 and Goldeneye and New Vegas and...hmm this is gonna take a while wish my holiday was longer :(

Has anyone else had the theory that maybe Team Meat is actually pretty clever in saying that they would release their game on the Wii, only to get Nintendo to promote the game for them, while secretly knowing the game could not make it on the Wii? Or something?

Because Nintendo markets the game in what way?

But... How exactly did Nintendo promote the game?

Nintendo showed Super Meat Boy at a few shows, including some of their own, as an upcoming WiiWare game. You can probably google for previews of impressions.

yes it does dammit! :D
a lot of Nintendo fans got excited, then they got the kick in the face, then they proceeded to buy the game on PC since they couldn't have it on their consoles :p

Nintendo-related sites and blogs talking about it for months in overhype mode. That's the best publicity you can get

Dude, NSMB is a completely different game from Meat Boy. Add to the fact that it belongs to a 20+ year flagship franchise and it's no surprise that it has sold a ton of copies. Meat Boy does not really gel with other Wii platformers like DK, Kirby, and Mario.
