Sushi-X Returns

And what's worse is that it seems Sushi-X is the determinant voice of the magazine. "Sushi-X doesn't like it, we don't cover it!" and that kind of thing. He was always a character on EGM or GameNOW but his sphere of influence was much smaller, which is what I think made him work. Frankly, I always thought Sushi-X's hatred of Game Boy was ridiculously biased and plainly stupid, considering that some of the best games of the time were on GB.

I'm interested to see what these guys come up with, but the market is completely different than it was back then.
Same here. Reading the magazine as a kid, it didn't take me long to realize that I should just disregard Sushi-X's reviews of Game Boy games. Especially when the scores were along the lines of 8, 8, 7, 3, with Sushi's "3" review reading something along the lines of, "Those other guys are right. This is a really good game. Too bad it's on a system that sucks." I'm afraid that this Wii60 mag is gonna be filled with fanboy crap like that, which we can get for free just about anywhere online nowadays.

This whole thing is also making me curious about the actual ownership of the Sushi-X character. I know that Ken and the guys have the little trademark symbol next to Sushi's name on that invitation in the OP, but do they really own the rights to him? I mean, we were using him in GameNOW with no problems just a couple years back.

Does Ziff own Sushi-X? Have Ken and Siller owned him all these years without caring that he was being used in GameNOW and EGM? Did they recently buy the rights from Ziff? I hope they actually do own the rights, because if they don't and Ziff's lawyers decide to get involved, this could be a short-lived comeback.

I think one of the most exciting parts of this release is the news of a Retro Player Magazine. Retro Gamer is great for the UK, but it's going to be nice having one in the States and one I don't have to pay $12 for.

An updated version of the Sushi-X returns press release went out this morning with an extra bit tacked on at the end about the party mentioned in the OP.

FOLLOW UP – 10.12.06
The Sushi-X launch party at Plush Nightclub in Chicago was an absolute blast!
Many adoring fans came out and mingled with the beautiful people of
Chicago nightlife while meeting the legend himself, Sushi-X (Ken
Williams) and playing Capcom's Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting on the
Super Famicom in what many called a lifelong dream fulfilled. Many
thanks to the fans who took time to show their respect, honor, and
love for Sushi-X, Trickman Terry, and Martin Alessi and revel in the
glory days of video games which encompass the 8-bit and 16-bit
generation. Represented were retailers and industry insiders from all
walks of life with one thing in common… they are true players. The
player is the most important person in the video game industry.
Without them, there'd be no industry.

A special celebrity appearance by the next Italian superstar soon to
hit the silver screen, the one and only Dominic Capone III, yes THE Al
Capone's great nephew who just signed a deal with Lions Gate Films
made an appearance and showed his support for Sushi-X,
Retro Player and the bold, yet much needed in this industry, Wii60
Player magazine and interactive portals.
Thanks to Plush nightclub, everyone needs to experience this amazing
place at least once in their life. http://www.plushchicago.com.
Thanks to Scott Levin of Knightlites for your generous support of this
event. http://www.knightlites.net
Special thanks to Mr. Dominic Capone III for honoring us with your
presence and entertaining us with your soon to be legendary charm,
charisma, and infectious humor. More on Mr. Capone is available at
http://www.capone.tv and http://www.myspace.com/capone3

I said wow.

I never had any idea Sushi-X was a bunch of random people. It comes as a bit of a shock. Sure I haven't read an EGM for probably 8 years or something, but back in the original days of the magazine I was an EGM fanboy. I thought I knew everything!

These days the only print media I buy is Retrogamer (subscribed), and the occasional Edge. But man, back then I literaly had towers of EGM magazines reaching from the floor to the ceiling.

Considering how thick those old EGMs were, a stack floor to ceiling would be about 13 issues. But back on topic, Sushi X returns, so what? How is this news?

That's weird. That's the second time this forum has done that to me, posting my quoted post in another topic.

First time around I thought it was just my mistake... but I hit the quote button both times... and I'm not in the habit of cutting and pasting quotes that are already there!

Hey mods, what's up with that?

CHICAGO, October, 18th, 2006 - edit
A Massive Impact Press Release
http://www.massiveimpact.tv

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Announcing Wii60 Player – The Voice of Brutal Truth for this
Enlightened Gaming Generation

Prepare for the 2nd coming of Williams and Martin.
The Dynamic Duo are back with purpose, vision and relentless tenacity.
Like Batman and Robin fighting crime
Jake and Elwood on a secret mission from God
Equally Jedi Knights and Sith Lords in their heart of hearts
Enki and Enlil – Creators and Destroyers
Yin and Yang – Purveyors of Light and Embracers of Darkness
Ken and Ryu, with a little help from Akuma & Sheng Long
Luke and Vader, with a little help from Yoda & the Emperor
They are here to restore balance to the Force within the video game industry.

Ken "Sushi-X" Williams and Martin "Low-Key" Alessi are here with a
vengeance to free the minds of this generation of players from the
smoke and mirrors of misleading marketing tactics of companies that
over promise and under deliver to the unsuspecting gaming public who
good heartedly forks over their hard earned cash time after time.
Wii've had enough already! Haven't you?

Wii60, an underground movement birthed by the most noble of players
during the E3 2006 conference is the unadulterated voice of truth in
this generation of gaming. These men of valor are some of the most
important people in the video game industry and their voice must be
heard, not just from coast to coast, but from pole to pole. The entire
world needs to hear what they have to say. Check out this true band of
Jedi Knights at http://www.wii60.com to see what Wii're talking about.
You are treasures, boyz!

Players around the world are fed up with Sony, it is no secret.
Just Google them and see for yourself.

Many have already cleverly renamed the PS3 the "PayStation" as they
are shocked and offended by the $600 price tag on a piece of hardware
many trusted industry insiders are calling the "biggest disappointment
in the last 10 years" using an overpriced proprietary media that many
technologists have already labeled the "Betamax of the 21st Century."
Sorry if you're feelin' Blu : (

They have also already dismantled the multi-million dollar marketing
campaign defacing it to say "PAY BEYOND" as they feel Sony is
expecting the average player to pay far beyond what the system is
worth to any sane individual. Power to the people!!! Tell it like it
is!!! Booya!!!

Sushi-X and Martin "Low-Key" Alessi are here to champion the cause of
the Wii60 movement and thrilled to announce Wii60 Player magazine and
interactive portal at http://www.wii60.tv "Hell hath no fury, like a
PLAYER scorned."

This outlet and conduit for the voice of truth will shake the very
foundation of the industry itself. With a bold and thundering
proclamation we will shout "PHUQsonyIN06" and enlighten the players of
this world that the way to spend $600 this year is to purchase an
absolutely, undisputedly REVOLUTIONary Nintendo Wii and the amazingly
solid and polished Microsoft Xbox 360, the ONLY real next-gen systems
to get. With these two consoles in your home, you will be in need of
nothing as far as kick-ass video gaming goes. Wii60 is the Obvious
Choice of this Enlightened Gaming Generation.

Martin has officially stepped down as Editor-In-Chief of Retro Player
passing the Matrix of Power to the amazing and always wonderful, Terry
"Trickman" Minnich. The site and magazine, Retro Player
http://www.retroplayer.tv deals with playing, collecting, and
appraising the games of the 80's and 90's both domestic and imported.
It is now in the hands of one of the most beloved personalities in the
video game business. Check him out at http://www.trickmantimes.com and
revel in his childlike purity.

Martin "Low-Key" Alessi will step up and take the reigns of Wii60
Player dubbed the
"Editor Needs Know Intro" a tribute to the Sumerian deity, Enki, a
personal hero of his.
More about that here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enki for you to soak
in during your quiet time. Check out Martin at
http://www.myspace.com/lokilowkey

Ken "Sushi-X" Williams will also join ranks with Martin on Wii60
Player. In the spirit of Enlil and will bring warlike wrath upon all
those who try to prey upon the innocence and purity of the players in
this world. From Zen-like calmness of Sushi-X to the burning fury of
his alter ego "the Evil One" you can be sure that his biting
commentary and endless barrage of no-holds-barred brutally honest
critiques will help reshape gaming and give guidance to players around
the world over the next generation.
Check out Ken at http://www.myspace.com/therealsushix

Also joining us on Wii60 Player is Mr. Dominic Capone III, Al Capone's
great nephew, actor, producer, marketer and entrepreneur and another
true man of honor and NOT afraid to voice his opinion in that loud,
proud and old school Chicago Italian-American fashion.
A special section of the magazine and portal will be called "What
Capone thinks…" and is destined to become a favorite destination for
players everywhere. Think of it as the Review Crew meets Goodfellas
and then Martin chimes in and you have two men who take no prisoners
telling you how it is. FUGGEDABOUTIT SONY!
Alessi and Capone, together at last! Look out! The Italians are taking
over the world again!
Check out Mr. Capone at http://www.myspace.com/capone3 and http://www.capone.tv

Last but certainly not least is Martin's very good friend and angelic
all-American girl,
Akira Lane. Akira is a world class supermodel and actress and will be
providing not only her radiant beauty to please the eyes of the
players of this world, but her charm, wit, intelligence and incredibly
sweet sense of humor. Akira is the secret weapon of Wii60 and will
ensure that young men around the world will have only the best of the
best in female talent to sooth their eyes and hearts. Plus most of
these girls kick ass at games!
Wii60 will have some of the most beautiful women in the world gracing
our pages such as Faline Song, Street Fighter III and DOA goddess and
Charisse Kailyn, 8-bit lover and
cute as a Start button.
Check out Akira at http://www.akiralane.com and http://www.myspace.com/akiralane
Check out Faline at http://www.myspace.com/missfaline
Check out Charisse at http://www.myspace.com/charissekailyn

Thanks to all the beautiful and hard working people that make this industry
a pleasure to be a part of and let's FINALLY have some FUN again!!!

Wow. This is so sad to see. A magazine dedicated to hating Sony.
I know. Seems like an odd focus for your new magazine. Like I mentioned above, back in the day, Ken Williams would have started a magazine dedicated to hating the Game Boy. Which, you know, probably wouldn't have been a smart stance to take. The sheer amount of Sony hate here seems pretty ridiculous.

Wow...pathetic. Interweb Mob mentality for the motherfvcking loss. I guess it's real trendy and cool to hate on Sony now. And thus the Sushi-X has-been agenda becomes overwhelmingly transparent...why doesn't he just sit on the street corner with a coffee can begging for change? Because obviously that's the kind of change he wants...

Ba-dum-tish!!!

Humanity once again disappoints and hits a new low.

That's the thing...there really isn't as much Sony hate amonst the general public as there is within a vocal minority crowd screaming at the top of their lungs on the internet.

Exactly. The one thing I'm looking forward to is when this magazine fails, so we can all laugh.

I remember Sushi-X, his constant Game Boy hatred really annoyed me, particularly given that at the time (1994-1998, before that I just had PCs) it was the only console I had... I mean, how many times can you say "Game Boy games don't have color so they are bad" and other such things before people start to ignore your GB reviews?

I got this press release too. I'm horrified by it. If this is the tone of voice they're going to take with the writing in the magazine, then who's going to want to read it? The "Phuq Sony in '06" joke isn't funny once, let alone a dozen times. If I want to read about Wii and 360 that's one thing, but to have the magazine *actively* rip on what may become the dominant platform is extreme stupidity. It's not 1988 where it's cool to rip on the Master System. They're just embarrassing themselves.

It's not actually trolling if you don't admit it
Martin's Alessi's been calling me all week, extolling their agenda over the phone. He's very excited, but I still can't tell if they're being serious about the whole Wii60 Player stance or it's just one big pisstake.

So retroplayer.tv is marketed by massiveimpact.tv (supposedly 'a full service design, advertising and marketing company') and yet the retroplayer.tv site is dead.

And now they're jumping on the Wii60 bandwagon and they expect to do any better?

Isn't this the 3rd press release they've sent out about the same thing which still hasn't materialised.

Wow, not only does "Sushi X" return but he's making a Wii60 magazine?!? I'm not pleased with Sony's pricing but even I think this is retarded. Even if I don't get a PS3 for awhile, I'd still like to learn about its games. Plus, isn't Wii60 at heart, a joke site?

Very educational thread, never knew that much about the character (i.e. it was a role passed on over the years) but it was always pretty obvious he was a put-on. However, the big news is that there are rumblings of a SF4... That's like 100x awesomer than anything having to do with Sushi-X
