Sven comments on the future of Monster Hunter outside Japan

Anyone know of any decent to good western supported Monster Hunter-like games? Faith can only be stretched so far before it warps into gullibility.

I love Monster Hunter, god do I love Monster Hunter. Its time to admit that its dead guys. Its not coming here at all. Not frontier, not HD Remake, not anything. If you want to continue playing monster hunter learn Japanese.

Its kind of insane how not 2 years ago Capcom was my favorite game company. Now I rate them slightly above Sega in terms of how often they have disspointed me. (Unfortunately, I doubt PSO2 makes it to the US either)

In the MMO realm, there's Hunter Blade, which is a janky shameless ripoff, and Raiderz, which is less janky, seems to have some modicum of shame, and isn't a complete ripoff.

PSO2 getting localized is very, very, very likely. The Japanese alpha clients have quite a few English translations files, and Sega has hinted that they want it to be global.

I can only hope Nintendo picks up the Monster Hunter franchise like they did with Dragon Quest. At this point I have no faith in Crapcom. le sigh

I have more faith in Sega than I do in Capcom.

I'm a little disappointed that we haven't heard any news about Ragnarok Odyssey. I'm considering importing it.

If Capcom doesn't bring it over, I'm sure Nintendo will. They did it with Tri, and I'm sure they still think that and Dragon Quest can be a big deal over here.

That and Spiral Knights has been performing exceptionally well. I wouldn't be surrpised if PSO 2 was Steam Exclusive in the US

I've played every MH game except 3G and Mobile.

Try again.

I'm speaking of Frontier. You most likely only played a little and didn't play the new seasons. You will not be disappointed. The 1st season was bland I agree on that but in the state it is in now no.

Sadly I'm in agreement with this.

This line from Sven is the same old thing he's been saying since P3rd showed up in the first place.

"Big things" for MH fans he said, guess he's referring to our wallets, since we won't have to buy any games.

I'm not expecting anything for E3 from Nintendo either. Honestly, Nintendo sort of irks me as well right now with their localization practices (still waiting on a word for FE Awakening in North America!), them and Capcom in their *current* states seems like a match made in Hell.

God's Eater Burst is...adequate.

If you're desperate, Phantasy Star Portable isn't terrible but it's kindof a great reason to hate JRPG tropes.

What makes me sad is being forced to play a good game on a 4 inches screen.

It makes me sad that playing in a 4 inch screen is the only option.

If it's a Tatsunoko vs. Capcom style expanded port with online play and perhaps extra content as well, I'll forgive them.
This is my position right now (but extra content is not that important for me, just add online and it's ready to go).

Still, doesn't Sven been saying the same thing every time? It doesn't sound like something that would calm fans at all. Still, the only thing that we can do is hope for an announcement (maybe at E3?).

Why would there be an announcement at E3 if the announcement is supposed to happen in Japan? I want it too but I don't understand some folks' logic.

because it was expected to be the western announcement of the existing 3DS version - there would be no recourse for that to be a Japanese announcement.

I hope they don't need Nintendo help this time.
Capcom got to learn how to market MH for western by themselves.

Maybe nintendo themselves don't want to bring it over.

The return on investment for mh3 could not have been good. Nintendo gave it halo/cod level marketing. It was crazier than anything capcom have ever done. Mh3 was everywhere.

I don't want to open a can of worms, but maybe this has something to do with their idea to sell a "hardcore" title on a console marketed for soccer moms.

I think it's worth it to have Nintendo associated with the name in the West in the off chance that it explodes in popularity.

And Halo/CoD level marketing? Really? I don't watch a lot of TV, so I don't know about that, but I don't remember too much outside of the demos in GS.

You obviously have no idea what Halo/CoD-level marketing is if you think MH3 got that kind of support.

That was the first thing I could think of.

I played just one MH game and that was on PS2 demo disc.
Would play again if was anywhere near me.

This discussion just goes in circles. MH has become more popular for each release in the west, by releasing better games and marketing more. Capcom couldn't hope for any better than that, and if they don't fuck things up the next release will do even better.

Because "localization announcements are made in Japan" is a) a bunch of crap, and b) Sven's way of telling the people on Capcom Unity to STFU and leave him alone since the decisions are made "in Japan"..

Given that MH Tri G is an amazing looking 3DS game, it has potential to really shine if they give it some E3 screen time.

But that seems largely dependent on Nintendo, and when it comes to localization of bigger eastern titles, the worst two companies right now seem to be Nintendo (of America) and Capcom (Sega's up there too), so this is a devastating combination to be relying on.

I'm not up to speed with Tri G.

Is the frankenstick a mandatory thing or just a quality of life thing?

Agreed and now is the time to release a Monster Hunter game on the 3DS. There aren't a ton of great games out on the 3DS at this point, so if they release Monster Hunter Tri G it will stand out and possibly attract new potential fans.

Ah now we're onto the phase where we blame the systems instead of Capcom USA. I'm out.

I don't know about Europe, but I saw ads before movies in the theater and some commercials on television during sports events. Most of the ads featured that viking looking fellow. What got me was seeing the ads that featured exciting bits from boss fights, seeing that footage get an audible reaction from the audience, and then another audible reaction, mostly groans, upon finding out the platform the game was for.

You probably can't Halo/CoD style market something if that marketing isn't on point with the marketing of the target platform.

I disagree, Capcom has absolutely destroyed the MH community. Really, anyone who is still a monster hunter fan is either A) a pirate, B) reads japanese, or C) both. They've jumped gaming systems like every year MH has been out, everytime they release a game stateside its 2 years late and 90% of the fans have always imported/pirated it.

Look, I know people who don't pirate games ever, except they have pirated every copy of MH after the original. Not because they are bad people, but because Capcom has TRAINED them into doing this. They don't pirate other games, they have a hacked wii/psp, but the only game thats pirated on either is MH. It started with MH2, and has continued for every release since. There is never a clear answer if /when its coming out here. Never a simultaneous release. Don't give me that shit that simu releases are impossible. They do it for almost all their other games!! Theyre doing it for DD, they can do it for MH, IF THEY GAVE A SHIT, or if they believed in it. ( They don't. )

All they do is half-ass hedged bets, then complain when they fail. Look, MH fans want to play monster hunter, theyre downloading vpn clients and making guides on how to play frontier. They make fan patches for psp releaes. They play ever release in japanese just because they want to play now. Why!? Because they are huge fans and theyre dubious on the prospects of if/when it will come stateside. They have no faith in Capcom, so they take it upon themselves.

If they want MH to be big in the US they need to actually bet on it. New game, simultaneous release, full marketing, the whole thing. Then continue supporting it, it should'nt be up in the air whether a game is coming here or not, we should know immediately, hell it shouldnt even be "when is it coming here"?. It should be here the same day its released everywhere else.

I'm still not even sure why there is no MHP3rd on the PSP/Vita on the announcement pipeline. My hope is that E3 will have something more, but I'm rapidly loosing hope. The second analogue stick instantly makes this game far more accessible than before.

I decided to buy the Japanese version as soon as I got my second vita card and it's a lot of fun, despite my Japanese being quite basic.

No AA Sequel, no MHP3rd. Capcom, this isn't looking good...

Well to be fair, the only plausible release they've totally passed on thus far has been P3rd (and 3G seems to be going that route too). Prior to that, aside from Frontier (which has a slew of other considerations that need to be made... I can understand passing that one up) and the Felyne spinoffs, we got all of the games in some form or another.

"Absolutely destroyed", at the moment is a bit in the realm of hyperbole. However, if they continue pushing us aside like this, it will certainly reach that point. I feel like MH Tri G is the make or break point. Sure they had the "PSP is on the way out" excuse for P3rd, but with 3G here's a new, hot selling system with a bit of a slump of big name titles as of now. That excuse doesn't exist. If Capcom doesn't release, it shows that they are in fact, dropping the series.
