SW FU Demo: When is it up?

dl'ed the demo, played through it three times and then deleted it after coming to the conclusion that it's not the GOTY candidate that I wanted. Glad I skipped over this at E3 in favor of Halo Wars and let my colleague cover Star Wars. He came back unimpressed and I somewhat doubted him since I had so much anticipation, but clearly he had any idea of where the game was heading in terms of gameplay.

Decent demo... will wait for final product to officially judge if there's true potential.

If you mess around you notice the DMM a lot more. This specific level doesn't show it off that noticeably, but it's there for sure. The doors, while they look like pre canned animations when you use the force to open them, can be bent the backwards, all the way to the wall, and then back again. You can bend steel beams out in front of the tie fighters, bend those backwards, or throw objects at them to bend them.

Nearly all wall panels can be affected as well. In the very first hallway, throw objects against the wall. Depending on the force, momentum, angle, weight ect. of the impact, it will bend and warp differently.

That's what I was doing for most of my second play through. Was really fun messing with the environment, seeing what I could do.

I dunno, I kind of felt it while playing. If Too Human had attack on buttons and you tilted the camera up a bit in Force Unleashed, you'd have a third person hack and slash style game with a lot of empty hallways. I don't think the games are all that similar, but I did kind of see the comparison.

Just finished playing it for the PS3, I liked it a lot but it seemed like it was a God of War clone especially with the QTE boss battle. I don't have a problem with that

I will definitely being getting it for the Wii as that has controls similar to No More Heroes which I love!

As far as the graphics goes, nothing really wow'd me in this game so much so that I would just have to have the HD version. Everything was shiny and the models looked nice but honestly it just looked like every other "next-gen" type game. The environments look nice also

The camera could use some work though! I played it very hack and slash so I did not really need to worry about it but if you are actually trying to use the lock on and force powers to their fullest advantage I can see where it would might cause a problem, half the time I could not get it to lock on to much and so I would just do force blasts to take care of people

Agree with others who compare it to Jedi Knight

I have some serious problems with this review. first and foremost being that the camera is clunky as hell, especially when you are grabbing objects with the force, which also kind sucks in my opinion. In addition, while not as aggregious as TH, I still felt like I was largely sliding around the environment as I was going thru a combo animation. Also being completely stationary while pressing block is annoying, I feel like I should be able to walk and deflect laser shots given that I have a lightsaber.

Also the game seems like it will be super easy... every single guy drops health.

In general I feel like the game was trying to emulate God of War and I think only did a barely passing job of it. This is not to say that chopping an AT-ST in half isn't cool, but I felt like the game is going to suffer pretty heavily from poor control design.

I liked it better than I thought I would, but it's still no Jedi Knight, Jedi Outcast, or Jedi Academy.

I liked:
-creating chaos
-controls felt good
-objects had weight (most of the time)
-combos

I disliked:
-not able to deflect blaster fire back at the shooter
-taking down the AT-ST
-level design could be better, rather than you -> corridor -> stuff -> tons of guys all the time
-lightsaber is sorta weak
-objectives would've been nice, but it seems like there will be in different levels

And there is a jump attack move, you jump and then hold down the regular saber strike button. Holding down is the key. It's not very powerful though, and I don't use it because it opens you up while only doing half damage to stormtroopers.

Also, I don't think Euphoria worked that great. I mean, the Killzone 2 animations look better and they're a mix of motion-capture and physics, while Euphoria is all physics. I also would've like the DMM to be used in puzzles, like bending metal to walk across a gap. I guess that's not very bad-ass though.

What's the deal with not being able to move while blocking? All the cool jedi can do it. I hope they change this before the game releases.

While I can't deny the joy of tossing Euphoria ragdolls around willy-nilly, between the vicious tearing, the wonky camera, and a lightsaber that feels like it's made of plastic, I can't say I'm incredibly impressed.

Even though I didn't like the demo I am still interested in the game. I felt that the camera was trash compared to other similar games but it was still manageable, if you are willing to tolerate it (thus not a full price game). I don't really like that there seems to be a fairly large cool down period between jumps. Facing of against the AT-ST was a pain because after landing from a jump I wouldn't be able to move or jump fast enough to avoid the counter attack. Being frustrated with controls just kills the gaming mood.

I am sure that a lot of the powers will be upgraded and having access to those menus would have been nice. Even if we couldn't play with the upgrade elements it would have been nice to see what options we would be faced with. This is probably only the first or second level so I imagine we will be able to upgrade things like deflection rates, perhaps speed and more varied combos (I hope). I did notice a few times that my character would randomly deflect laser fire as he was running . . . Plus given the level of destructibility I imagine there will be puzzles that require some form of environmental manipulation.

One concern, as has been mentioned, is that every enemy drops health. It is my hope that you can upgrade your character so that he can avoid damage and tackle large groups with style. But if every enemy drops health then it seems the designers opted to make our character a sponge who can't avoid taking damage and then balance that by giving you health for every kill. While this will keep tension up it just kind of destroys any sense of being a bad ass Jedi/Sith.

I will wait for reviews to get a better scope on the camera and controller issues, as well as the extent to which we can upgrade. As it stands my interest is still high enough to keep an eye on it and rent it when I get the chance.

The camera and targeting system were godawful. Why can't I throw shit at the AT-ST? Cuz I'm throwing it at random other objects I'm apparently aiming at, of course!

As for the rest, nothing special.

I couldn't help but laugh at Soul Calibur's Apprentice looking infinitely better than this (official) portrayal.

Yeah, Soul Calibur Apprentice blows the actual apprentice away by a mile, the camera and targeting is pretty damn bad and the force dash *does* look a lot like Baldur skates. The force grip throw mechanics are clunky clunky clunky. Heck you lose so much life fighting even generic storm troopers that every enemy has to drop health orbs to keep you going. You don't really feel like a jedi because of that.

Pick it up when it's cheap guys, it seems like it's got a good Star Wars story.

I knew there as a reason for EB Canada to have their full-price trade-in within one week of purchase offer going for this game.

The only other time they did that was with Haze...

Combat reminded me of Dynasty Warriors which I can appreciate.

Unfortunately stuff that everybody else has mentioned pissed me off.

Camera.

Force mechanics.

QTE boss fight.

Will Gamefly.

Finally!

Observations:

- Playstation3 audio indeed has DTS

- Audio overall has more "oomph" to it...especially on the low-end

- Controls feel more fluid due to analogs...force pushing/pulling in particular felt ALOT easier to pull off

- Performance did seem slightly better on PS3 version...especially during a heavy physics scene, like when you force push a corridor filled with stuff/dudes. Tearing though, seemed about the same....which means, barely there

- Loadtimes seemed the same...though will have to play again to be sure

- obviously dashing/locking with L1 and R1 feels more natural

So that's that. Definetely buying the PS3 version to be sure :D

Forgettable, at best. It's not interesting enough to get away with the awkward camera and clumsy feel. If this game didn't have a Star Wars coat of paint, it wouldn't receive a second look.

You have to be in a range where it attacks you, then you can throw things at it automatically.

This - plus you use both sticks for throwing, not just the left as you can move items on the X, Y, and Z axis. Also, is everyone who complains about the camera actually adjusting it manually with the right stick when moving? I do it constantly. It's not as speedy as I'd like it, but I haven't had camera issues yet since I'm in total control of it. Maybe the final game will have a speed slider for it.

There's lots of saber combos and attacks to mess with when you switch em up with the force powers. On the PS3 version, square square, triangle triangle gives you two saber hits followed by two force lightning charged saber attacks that just tear everything up. You can pick a guy up with R1, press square and toss your saber at him, then use a force push with circle to blow him away. Or you can pick a guy up with R1 and position him behind a group of enemies and use the saber throw as it'll cut everyone in front of him killing them all and finally the guy you're holding with the force.

A lot of people are having a very hard time hitting the AT-ST with the objects and it just takes practice and a bit of proximity. If you're having trouble though, you can just get right in on top of the walker, double jump and use force lightning to stun the walker and follow that up with several mid air saber attacks. Repeat this combination a few times and it'll be an easy kill. You only need to knock it to under just below half health before the QTE kicks in for the kill. You can dodge its rapid fire hits by double jumping and using the force dash with L1. Just get behind it or stun it with force lightning to stop the rapid fire.

Despite the saber not being a 100% 1-hit kill with single strikes, I still feel completely badass in this demo. A lot of the moves and combos are just amazing and we all know with the level up system and the powers we have yet to see that this is just the beginning. The game wouldn't be very fun if everything was a guaranteed 1-hit saber kill though. :/

I love God of War.
I love Star Wars.

This mixes both very well. I can't wait for this game.

Yup, I pretty much agree with Ryu. Just finished playing through the demo twice; once on Sith Warrior, and once on the Sith Lord difficulty. I enjoyed it and can see myself purchasing the full game when it's released.

Wooooooooooow!!! That guy is my hero! :lol

I think the sound effects, classic iconic enemies/characters (aka vader), really let me look past the sloppy ass combat. Although I do hope you stay as overpowered in the demo throughout the whole full game as that was the best aspect of the demo for me.

Camera could use some work though.

Ok, so I gave it another run, and although my initial reaction was rather harsh, the game is pretty fun. I'm still sticking to my earlier gripes, but overall its cool game. I was looking foward to this game, thought it was going to be one of the big ones. So disappointed.

Why would you laugh at that? Comparing a 1 on 1 fighting game character model against one from an action game? What did you expect?

I think some of you guys need to play the demo again. Pelting the AT-ST is pie. Just aim in the general direction and it'll land. No lock on needed.

And I'm pretty sure you do deflect blaster shots while you're moving. As long as you're facing the enemy and not doing anything else. (I'll have to check. Maybe I was just faster on the block than I thought)

I thought it was a lot of fun. Lots of combos to toy with. And I can only imagine force pushing and throwing will only get better the more familiar and quicker I become using them.

QTE stuff was a bummer. I'm not much of a fan of that method. Its tired and needs to go away. Especially in a game where the in game combos look as cool as they do here.

And the dialog seemed a little much. The tone and atmosphere all seemed great, but hearing Vader talk to the App like he's an idiot hurts. "The Emperor cannot know.... that means no witnesses... none... so that means no Imperial troops either... you follow?" Yeesh. Hopeuflly its not that expository throughout.

I think the way you are in the demo is your weakest possible state. You become much more powerful.

Didn't see anyone post about this:

There's a small secret area in the first hangar. If you jump on top of the wrecked shuttle, there'll be a catwalk above your head. You can jump up there from the top fin of the shuttle. There's a power up there that sucks health away from enemies.

Part of good game design is not leaving the gamer to find a babysitter for your shitty camera.

Additionally R3 just re-centers the camera behind you. Which is more efficient, since I'm not playing an FPS, nor do I feel I should be subjected to FPS rules in an TPS.

As for the stupid walker here's how it works.

Run at it, double jump, attack the shit out of it's face.

Do QTE.

Win the demo.

The day I can't solve a problem by stabbing shit to death is the day I don't want to solve problems anymore. :P

Sorry to hear about people saying they had a tough time hitting the AT walker
...last few tries, I didn't even hit once with my saber, I just kept throwing shit at it to wear it down, then did the QTE

...oh yeah, there is a "camera sensitivity" setting in the options menu btw

I didn't have any trouble with the walker. I just did an air combo in its face and stunned it with force lightning just before I fall back down. Rinse and repeat until prompted for QTE.

Another issue is why the hell there had to be a QTE for that, it woulda been much cooler to have to knock it off the platform, or push it over or something. So much missed potential.

Well there is a scene in the trailer where the apprentice just crushes the AT-AT to the ground. I really think it was a bad decision to not give you a bunch of abilities/powers to play around with that you might unlock later in the game. DMC 4 gave you a couple of moves to play around with in the demo that you didnt start of with in the game.

I had a few problems with it. My biggest disappointment was the QTE at the AT-ST, though. I still think this could be a fun game to play through. Not going to be a DAY 1 for me, but if I have some spare cash later on, then I'll probably pick it up.

Anyone remember the joy of force waving entire squads of Sith in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic?

I think this game captures some of that, at least.

A lot of you seemed to have some pretty high expectations. It seems the higher the expectations you people had, the higher the hyperbole.

I went in with zero expectations and I enjoyed myself. There were definitely a lot of problems with the game, but it is moderately fun and definitely one of the better Star Wars games. I think Star Wars fans will have a blast with it.

What was going on with the crazy facial animation when the characters speak, though? That was just bad. I also got a chuckle out of the loading screen when going to the options menu from the main screen.

Yeah, anyone expecting something as good as Jedi Knight is kinda crazy.

This is more in the Jedi Knight II ballpark, instead.

Is it worthe a $60 gamble, though?

I WANT TO SAY YES.

I might wait for the Giant Bomb review, assuming Brad (Go Brad!) doesn't review it as from his preview stuff he loves the shit out of it already.

Me too, but unfortunately i think it falls in the rental category. Its all going to come down to how much money i have in my pocket at the time it comes out.

I'd say it certainly surpasses the Force/saber combat in Jedi Outcast....and I love Jedi Outcast
