Swap Note

Nikki sent me an Art Academy stationary with a cute pic attached. I sent it out to my friends list so it should spread around here soon enough.
 
Has anyone figured out what the criteria is for having a SwapNote Mii show up in your Mii Plaza? People were talking about having Nikki show up in their Mii Plaza, but I never did. I do have a Nikki Mii in my Mii Maker which I scanned via QR, but it's a Japanese version which I think is fanmade.

However, I did end up with the I Fight Dragons Mii in my Mii Plaza.

With my old 3DS that I had scanned that same QR code, I never got Nikki either. However, she just showed up on my new 3DS in the Plaza.

I don't think it was fan-made. I think it was moved out of the Plaza into Mii Maker and then had a QR code made from it (which you can do if you are willing to move Nikki out of your Plaza.) Weird as that all is, I think that may have had something to do with Nikki not showing up in my Plaza.

If that's the case, then I should presumably be able to find a QR of her official Mii with her English name... which I'm not having much luck with at the moment. For now I deleted her Japanese Mii and will see if she shows up.

And being an invited Mii I'm guessing there wouldn't be a drawback to moving her to Mii Maker and back, but I'm not sure since I just found out you can do that today.

You know, I think I scanned that one, and it replaced the Japanese Nikki? It probably had the same identifier or something.

Thinking on the logic above, it does kinda make sense that you wouldn't see invites from other games in the Plaza if those same Miis existed in Mii Maker. The assumption probably is that if you have them in Mii Maker, you made them or know them, so it would filter against those for Plaza use.

Yeah, there was a comment saying that earlier in the thread, so I scanned the Japanese one back in first, then scanned that one, and sure enough the English one replaced the Japanese one.
 
I've been going crazy trying to figure out why Swapnote doesn't send out my notes anymore. It only ever says that it's "saving for delivery via Spotpass" and then it will confirm only with "note has been save" (or something like that)

I'm pretty sure it used to say "message sent!"

I did have my date set incorrectly by a day and finally fixed it. But I can't remember if the Swapnote issue began before or after that. Also not sure if the issues started before or after the recent update.

The research I've done on the issue led me to delete Swapnote and all extra data (yeah, lost my messages, but I'm okay with that).

I did it in this process.

1. Delete Swapnote
2. Delete Extra Data for Swapnote
3. Shut system down
4. Start up and load the eShop
5. Redownload Swapnote
6. Tested sending a note. Didn't work...

I tried turning off Spotpass and Streetpass in Swapnote, backing out of the app and then loading it again and turning it on, and it still doesn't work.

I'm afraid of having to do a full system formatting.

But I'm wondering if I'm missing something. Any thoughts?

Yep. I even tried clearing the wifi connections and reestablishing them. Tested the connection with the browser. Still no notes being sent.

Does the recipient need to be online for the note to be delivered? I don't think I remember that being the case before.

And I'm pretty certain it's not that the people I'm sending a note too have their boxes maxed out and are unable to receive. :T
 
I don't believe it ever says "message sent" or anything like that. At least, it never has for me, and my notes get sent out just fine. Maybe send a note asking someone to confirm receipt by replying?

hrmm, yeah i'll try that. Could've sworn it gave a confirmation when sent. But maybe I was remembering things wrong. I did check a youtube video guide on sending notes and indeed it just said "saving for delivery"

I just tested it. The messages only refer to saving the note. Even the most explicit one to do with sending it is that it is saving it for when you are next online to send it. I presume it functions by saving the note and then sending it when you are next online and in sleep mode or in another app that does not need online.

You're absolutely right. I finally managed to get one of the few IRL friends I have who owns a 3DS to test it to see if my messages were being received and sure enough...

This is correct. You can "send" notes even with wireless off. They are uploaded via SpotPass whenever the 3DS goes online. SpotPass uploads work the same as SpotPass downloads: it happens in the background regardless of the running app.

Almost regardless, isn't it? I recall Ocarina 3D blocks StreetPass while running; doesn't it block SpotPass too? There are probably other cases. But typically yes it does run while you're doing other things.

I think that was just a bug (edit: not a bug) with Ocarina 3D, because it completely blocked your Wi-Fi connection -- you even got signed out from the Friend List. I don't believe that's supposed to happen with any 3DS game.

Was it? I remember Nintendo saying something like that the developers can disable features like Wi-Fi connection to save power or something.
 
Maybe it was intentional, but I can't imagine why. It's so contrary to the principles of the 3DS.

edit: seems you're right. It's still pretty weird! Fortunately, as far as I'm aware no other game seems to do this.

It's my belief it was less a bug and more a case of being released with early SDKs when juggling background tasks and the games were more complicated (remember how Ridge Racer had issues with the eShop-enabling update?) But that's only speculation on my part...

The way the messages draw/write out before your eyes really adds personality to the messages, and I can't help but wonder who's the person behind the pen for Nikki's notes and other SpotPass notes. Was the Reggie note really written by him? Is the role of Nikki played by one person or do multiple people take on the responsibility? I'll likely never know, but it's interesting to think about.
 
Ah, so it was a Mother's Day message. Well that explains why I didn't get it in the UK then, since we already had Mother's Day yonks ago.

I thought it was rather icky, and this is coming from a guy who fully supports and has recommended Art Academy both on its own and for use with Swapnote.

I guess I'm turning into an anti-capitalist in my old age.
 
It made me sort of sad, actually. It brought up old memories of making something silly in Mario Paint and grabbing my mom to show her what I'd learned how to do. It's the kind of feelings that I haven't thought about in ten or more years, and this stupid little note from Nikki brought them to the surface again.

On a tangentially related note... I only have the IFD and Mother's Day stationary and was wondering if someone would be willing to help me acquire the rest?

Did you get the ones I sent you? I numbered them in order of their release with the final one being the Mother's Day one. Let me know if you are missing any and I will happily resend them.

I actually got the note from Nikki today using that stationery which was odd since Mother's Day in the UK was almost two months ago. Still her Mii turned up too so that was nice :).

I got the new stationery yesterday but how long it's been out in the wild I couldn't say. Not long I'd wager as the Swap Note community seem to be pretty good about spreading the love :).
