Sweden passes 10 million inhabitants

When the state started doing inventory of our populus it was classified, because Russia would have annexed us if they knew how easy it would have been

I know but it's still pretty crazy when I think about it. Those two cities I listed have a combined square mileage of 540 (1400 square km). Sweden is 204,000 square miles ( 530,000). Cali is actually about 40,000 square miles (105,000) fewer than Sweden and has four times its population..

Its still to crowded i hate when you have to stop in a roundabout.

Which one of those colors is Swedan?

To swedes: how is it with the "lack of sunlight" say in Stockholm? Is it really a big deal? I was in copenhagen in december (which is still more south than Stockholm, but more north than say Malmö) and didn't notice any difference to Austria. And is there a "recommended" time of the year to visit?

Summer is always nice. The sun is up really long. As of right now, I think that it's light out for a fair amount of time. (Uppsala area.) Overall though I learned how to handle the darkness of winter so it doesn't bother me a lot anymore.

Good going Sweden by the way.

During summer it's almost light 20 hours a day, but winters suuuuuuuuuck. Nov-dec are vampire months, I hate them, sun gets up at 9 and sets at 2, and add the weather its pretty much gloomy all day.

June/July/August/September are nice months usually, May can be a hit or miss.

I hate the winters here, and need light therapy during them.. :P

The crazy thing is that Sweden is actually bigger than say Germany (which is at 82million).

Sweden 450,295 km2
Germany 357,168 km2

There is a lot of "uncommon" geographical knowledge that is really fascinating. Australia being bigger than the US, Bangladesh having a population of 160million, generally the fact that most of our maps are completely unproportional towards the north.

Agreed.

Both. Lots of people seeking asylum but also scandinavia and sweden in particular seem to have a certain pull-factor within the EU. My gf's best friend for example moved to Uppsala university to study there and likes it alot, aside from the lack of sun sometimes.

But... it isn't.

Isn't 20 light hours a day also kind of annoying? Then again I guess you can always pull down the window shutters to sleep.

Today we have about seven hours of sun in Stockholm. If it's cloudy, and it often is, then there will be a dull gray light. May to September are great months to visit us. The northern parts of the country are pretty in winter.

That's an old coin, they removed the visual on current ones.

Yeah, it's still funny it once was real though :)
And it might even be funnier because they acknowledged it and changed it. Like, there were officials who looked at it and thought "shit, that really looks like a penis with balls and all..." and they had to do all the paperwork needed to change it :D

It still isn't.

It is, when we talk about Australia as a whole vs Contiguous 48.

Australia - 7 692 024
http://www.ga.gov.au/scientific-top...ions/area-of-australia-states-and-territories

Together, the 48 contiguous states and Washington, D.C. occupy a combined area of 3,119,884.69 square miles (8,080,464.3 km2), which is 1.58% of the total surface area of Earth. Of this area, 2,959,064.44 square miles (7,663,941.7 km2) is land, composing 83.65% of U.S. land area, similar to the area of Australia.[6]
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contiguous_United_States

(I guess if you also only count the australian mainland area, then the contiguous US is indeed ahead still but only by ~4000km²)

In either case, the point is that most people probably wouldn't expect Australia to be this big.

The Netherlands hit the 17 million inhabitants mark last year. It's roughly a tenth the size of Sweden.

Time to deploy the Swedish military to the Finnish border. Too many Finlandia's coming into Sweden. I will gladly allow all Finnish women to pass, the man can stay home and restore Nokia's glorious past.

Yeah, the Nordics have some of the lowest population densities in Europe.

I find Winter fine when there's snow as that pretty much lightens up everywhere.

Unfortunately the last four winters have been shite.

(I guess if you also only count the australian mainland area, then the contiguous US is indeed ahead still but only by ~4000km², but then again this map says otherwise: http://www.comparea.org/USA48+AUS - their australia size however doesnt match up with the current wiki article they cite)

If your talking total area it isn't . You didn't qualify anything else.

The Netherlands hit the 17 million inhabitants mark last year. It's roughly a tenth the size of Sweden.

If you treat England alone, which could well happen these days, I believe it is the second most densely populated country in the EU after Malta. In 2013 there were 413 people per square kilometre. The Netherlands is 411.8.

I wonder how they'll spin the news on the immigrant minority eventually becoming the majority in a couple of decades.

14 degrees here in Gothenburg right now... It's like we've got summer all over again! :)

Hmm, yeah, those damned Finns taking over.

I'm impressed it slipped past the many eyes that would have had to approve it in the first place.

Yeah, it's still funny it once was real though :)

I think it was part of a grander re-design of the motifs as a whole (convenient eey?) so that the coins didn't need to be changed as new countries joined the union, there are still millions of the old coins in circulation though so plenty of geographical phallus's to go around.

The "18% of Swedish people born abroad are from Finland" data is kinda skewed, the main reason behind that is the mass migration that happened in the 60s. It doesn't really represent current immigration patterns so you can sleep your nights safe and sound.
;)

Amazing that New York City is almost as big (population) as all of Sweden. Either I should be surprised that Sweden has so few residents, or that NYC is just that fucking packed.

I guess plenty cities in China or India that no one here can name have bigger populations than a lot of European countries.

To give you an idea of the extreme it gets to in Stockholm, this photo was taken at a suburban Stockholm station at 11:40pm on 2015-06-25:

You kind of get used to it.

Woah that seems insane, but also cool in a way. Kind of reminds me of the typical bright nights in videogames :p

Maybe that has an effect on crime statistics btw? Since afaik there's studies showing that usually more crimes are committed at night / in badly-lit areas?

You also miss it a shit ton when you're living abroad in places where the sun sets at 21:00 or before during high summers. :|

I'm always amused by sleeping in during the winter at the weekend. You wake up and you're not sure if it is a bit dark because the sun is going up or down. It really could be either.

Firstly, another person from Gothenburg on GAF?! Is your name Glenn by any chance? :)
Secondly, it's 8 degrees i Gothenburg here at work :P.

Got-GAF represent! :)

14 degrees according to my outside termometer, but could be cause the sun actually got some stray rays through the clouds :) And 8 degrees, yeah, still almost like summer, right? :)

I want a wall between Norway and Sweden, stat. Having a long open border to Sweden is the worst feeling in the world guys.

We are pretty awesome here in Sweden. Would prefer not having a wall though. Don't want to make it needlessly difficult in invading Norway for the oil in the coming years.

It does get pretty silly, but like you said, you get used to it.
Had this in my dropbox, taken 3 AM on June 6th according to the file date:
