Is this true? I thought the 1300 cases in Mexico also included mild cases.

You also have to take into account those who get mild symptoms but don't seek any medical help.

How many of you go to the doctor for flu-like symptoms? I can't imagine many.

I've never gone to the doctor when I had flu-like symptoms.

As someone with hypochondriac tendencies, I can't wait for the fun the next few weeks will bring.

My throat feels a little scratchy.

I have been this way all my life. It's something I've had to live with, I don't know how common it is with people.

In the past, I contracted SARS, Bird Flu, Anthrax and got a Brain Tumour apparently.

It's almost as if I posted this myself.

Good to see Rick Perry clamoring for federal assistance with tackling the spread of swine flu in Texas after calling for secession. Perhaps he should sprinkle some of that famed libertarian magic dust to halt the spread of the flu.

My guess is that by the end of next week this will all be over, and it will turn out it was all a big misdiagnosis of regular flu or some such.

Now Mother Nature will kill us all to spite you D:

Regular mass killer triple-hybrid flu?

SARS! Bird Flu! West nile! ManbirdPig Virus! ManBearPig Virus! Y2K! 2012! Asteroids! Great Depression 2.0!

We're ALL GONNNA DIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!

This is much ado about nothing. Buncha chicken littles.

I guess we'll know soon one way or another how this is going to go. Or it will mill around for a while like it is.. and then mutate into something worse.

If you were to get the current swine flu and recover, would you be immune to a deadly mutation?

Of course, encouraging people to catch the disease also would increase the likelihood of it mutating.
Yup. There's even a chance that you will be immune if you got sick of the human component of this particular swine flu since it seems like last year's vaccine is offering some protection, or so some US experts say.

The vaccine had the same type as this swine flu, H1N1.

Too bad I haven't had a flu shot in about 15 years.

Reading the anecdotal reports coming out of Mexico throws this situation into a scarier light.
Uh...

I'm a specialist doctor in respiratory diseases and intensive care at the Mexican National Institute of Health. There is a severe emergency over the swine flu here. More and more patients are being admitted to the intensive care unit. Despite the heroic efforts of all staff (doctors, nurses, specialists, etc) patients continue to inevitably die. The truth is that anti-viral treatments and vaccines are not expected to have any effect, even at high doses. It is a great fear among the staff. The infection risk is very high among the doctors and health staff.

There is a sense of chaos in the other hospitals and we do not know what to do. Staff are starting to leave and many are opting to retire or apply for holidays. The truth is that mortality is even higher than what is being reported by the authorities, at least in the hospital where I work it. It is killing three to four patients daily, and it has been going on for more than three weeks. It is a shame and there is great fear here. Increasingly younger patients aged 20 to 30 years are dying before our helpless eyes and there is great sadness among health professionals here.

WTF O_O

Argh everyone is always posting that stupid quote. It's old, meaningless, from some random person.

It's just that that page hasn't been updated, it's a oneshot posts from the BBC, of random comments from random people who submit their comments. It's really to take with a grain of salt.

The big discrepancy seems to be that in US they say that one of the classes of antivirals seems to work but Mexico says none of their antivirals work. Do they simply not have access to the alternatives?

"Mexico" didn't say that, some random guy said so.

That's what stood out for me reading some of those reports. Doctors in NYC were apparently able to treat the 8 or so teenagers who came back with the flu strain, but their health system is probably the most advanced in the nation.

Oh man, I heard this is over in Australia and NZ now too(or at least possibly). That was fast!

How exactly can people tell swine flu from normal flu?

Even if that quote is true, it's a very small sample. For all we know, it is only happening at that one hospital. Still sad, but it doesn't present the bigger picture.

Is there any chance that the strain that the US authorities THINK they know of is actually NOT the one that has been killing people in Mexico? And hence people checking in and being confirmed as having the same flu in the US are not dying because it's NOT the one that has been killing people in Mexico but another one identified as a result of increased analysis?

EDIT: Now two suspected cases in Quebec. One in Columbia.

All the news reports I've read say that only 20 cases in Mexico have been confirmed as the same as the American one, so it's possible.

Imagine that, cause if you look at the google maps some places have had like 6 people die in one clinic as a result, that's pretty high toll for one place. So it could be that the strain that was analyzed and considered to be the same that caused the deaths was sent to the US and now the US are identifying people with that strain, but it's not the one that has been killing people, just one that has been identified as a result of more people checking in. If they didn't send the right strain early on, and I don't know how that stuff works, but it would be no surprise that so many cases would show up all over the place without being as deadly as it has been in Mexico.

Also, they say the Mexico City flu effects people in the prime of their life but all the US tags say age 10, 9, 8, 13, 13, 41, 16, 16, 16, etc

This worries me though... cause perhaps the reason why it hasn't killed anyone is because no one between 20-40 has gotten it here yet. I mean I have read many reports saying how it is only 20-40 year olds who are dieing.

Pandemic flus can infect anyone, it's just more likely to kill young adults, due to something called a cytokine storm. If I were guessing I would suggest the cases we're seeing the US are mostly infections from a school, and that's why we aren't seeing many deaths yet: the infections among the most vulnerable groups (the elderly and 20 to 30 year olds) haven't progressed far into the symptomatic stage yet.

They said in the US there was one case that required hospitalization. But they gave no details on that one.

Hi, i'm currently living in Mexico City and the streets have been really quiet and empty since friday. Eerie since we're talking of a 20+ million city. Schools are not opening until May 6, but i don't think people are on mass hysteria like some of the BBC reports say.

President Calderon said today on a nationwide speech that the virus is curable and the country is ready with enough anti-virals, but yeah, that should be taken with a grain of salt as his job is to prevent world's paranoia.

In my own experience, i haven't met anyone with the virus yet. What is true is that some newspapers were reporting extrange cases of people dying from respiratory diseases since a week ago.

It is important to say that all the cases have been reported on Mexico City and San Luis Potosi, so no need to think all the country is doomed.

But yeah, i'm currently at the source of this horrible situation so GAF, wish me luck :(

Good luck man, you'll be ok. I think if you do have to go out, just wear a surgical mask, if you have one. If not, order one online or something.

20 confirmed, but 81 suspected deaths and 1,400 suspected cases.

One suspected case in Brazil now. Probably it's not the Swine Flu because the patient doesn't have fever, but anyway he's under isolation in the hospital. The man was in Mexico for work.

Indeed. Karma.

According to the Mural newspaper -Guadalajara edition of the Reforma newspaper- website. President Felipe Calderón declared that 929 out of the 1384 suspected cases were discharged from the hospitals and are safe. That's 67%... so that means good news.

In other news, both the ITESO and the UdeG -local colleges- are going to be closed tomorrow. My college -ITESM- hasn't declared anything, but I hope some announcement is made later tonight.

EDIT: I corrected the percentage regarding discharged suspected cases.
