That quote is utter bullshit, the media would have caught wind of something like that by now.

Do you live in Mexico City? If you don't then you should know that local media would NEVER tell the people that the current situation at hospitals and clinics is very delicate.

Doctors and interns have been falling ill due to this outbreak. We need international coverage over here. It's necessary.

Do you feel more and more in Mexico City are getting the virus?

I still think shutting down air traffic till this is resolved is the best idea.

What are you talking about, every big news outlet in the world has journalists in Mexico just like they have them in Brazil or Israel or France of Japan or China.

I mean they should come over here and investigate the current situation inside the clinics. There are strong rumors of quarantined hospitals already. So far every single international news report is just repeating what our media wants them to know.

They might be doing that very soon, althought the situation in the city is under control. The streets are just almost dead but that's just people being cautious. I just went to the store to buy more food and water just in case. I wore a mask and gloves, and the ratio of people wearing masks and those who aren't is close to 50/50.

One thing I wouldn't do is getting close to any hospital right now.

Yeah... call me insane.. but I live in the heart of Manhattan and have been taking a lot of precautions... decided to pretty much stay in today and just see where this thing goes. I figure better safe then sorry

I just want to wait past the 24-48 hour period to see if the amount dramatically increases. I am worried the virus is spreading just in its very early stages so no one has any symptons yet really.

Probably overly paranoid... but eh I want to live for awhile lol..

Garcia: and where do YOU get your info from uh? Journalists from any country currently in Mexico can go to any hospital if they want to like any other Mexican journalist can.

I think its interesting that past the initial large 1,000 reports... its really slowed down it seems. Perhaps hospitals are having problems... but the disease isn't infecting nearly as many people in the area. The 81 that have died were probably part of the original groups to get it... which means no one was really expecting it...

So this leads me to believe that if we do have an big situation here in the states... right now is the worse time to be about in about in a major city.

Didn't Obama just return from a trip in Mexico? And there's no ban on travel to and from Mexico?

Am I supposed to take this seriously?

I have a highschool friend working at a private hospital, one of the most important in one of the most exclusive residential zones. He has told me and my family (personally) that the situation is worse than what we've being told so far. People have been constantly dying from acute respiratory diseases in the last couple of months. This isn't something that started a week ago, it dates back to March, maybe earlier this year.

The cousin of a very close friend of mine told him last Wednesday to please take care and take vitamins since there was a very strong flu outbreak happening at the hospital she's currently working at. She told her that young people have been dying from severe pneumonia without having any kind of medical records of previos strong diseases. And even nurses in that hospital have fallen ill from that very same disease. This was one day before the outbreak became official and all academic activies were cancelled. Edit: I forgot to mention she's sending her 2 year old daughter to live with her father who's settled at Cancun right now.

This are the 2 closest testimonies I can guarantee are 100% true.

I can tell you of many others I've been hearing from distant friends and friends of friends who also work at hospitals.

Interns, nurses and doctors are falling ill and have died as well. It is a very delicate situation out there.

Wondering the same thing. Seems like the normal panicmongers are running with this full speed ahead (hi, Drudge) but the more level-headed sources aren't too worried yet.

If it looks like it's getting worse fast I'm keeping my daughter home tomorrow, otherwise business as usual, I suppose. Not in a breakout area so not too worried.

It was announced yesterday in relation to a lot of places, not just schools.

I live in the city and respectfully disagree with this statement. Perhaps it holds true for TV coverage, but not all of the newspapers/press.

I understand why you disagree with that statement, but you know as well as I do that the vast majority of people living here are slaves of the TV and they barely read the newspapers.

Why in the world would she do that when the students in NYC who contracted the disease got it from Cancun?

I know it has been said before, but people need to remember that this thing could just as easily mutate into something harmless instead of something more harmful.

Here's hoping it ends up harmless.

x2. I'm also hoping for that. And answering your previous question... I have no idea dude. I'm sure she is very stressed since she's exposed to it on a daily basis and just wants to make sure her daughter remains safe. Why send her to Cancun with her father when it might not the best bet to do so?... Well, she might not have family or friends living in any other state.

What are the most obvious immediate signs of a flu? Warm body temperature? Coughing? Sneezing? Head ache?

I haven't had a flu since I was like five years old I think... and atm I am feeling a little warm body wise...

fuck :lol

I have asthma so I'm already at risk for the regular flu.

I am scared now :(

So long it seems that swine flu is fatal only in Mexico (</3). Apparently every single tourist who's gotten sick after visiting our country has fully recovered. I wouldn't be too alarmed if I were you guys.

A fever is the body raising its neutral body temperature. To someone who has a fever, they feel cold or normal temperature but a thermometer says different. Warm blooded animals have extremely regulated temperatures.

It's worth noting for all the uber panicy people that diseases that actually become pandemics have fairly low *mortality* rates because a high infection rate + high mortality rate starves the disease (too many people dying means not enough people transmitting). No one should be shocked at 70% of people being discharged. Even massive plagues of the past have only had mortality rates of like 10-20% as worst case scenarios when treated.

Frankly, I'm getting a bit tired of these chicken little scenarios that keep popping up about new strains of flu.

Maybe it's something in our genetics?

First of all Garcia, you need to remember that this kind of situations will lead to FUD... and nobody wants that while on an epidemic. The problem with this kind of thinking -either the "Nothing is happening! It's the Chupacabras all over again" or the "Don't believe the media! We're doomed! Everyone's going to die!"- is that it only creates more FUD.

I was just talking to my GF over the phone and she told me to wait a bit, her mom wanted to say her something and I listened the conversation. Her mother said: "We're taking your brother to the doctor. He has an stomachache...and... with this psicosis everyone has right now I better go and have him checked". My GF just said "Ok". and carried on. What really bothers me is how FUD is affecting people. I mean, taking my GF's brother to the doctor just because an stomachache?!?! Really?!?! And blaming it on the flu?!? Which doesn't even relate to a stomachache?!? In a city in which there hasn't been any confirmed cases?!? She used the word psicosis, which is now the new buzzword, and I'm pretty sure a lot of people don't even know what it means.

The fact that streets are empty now in Mexico City is a good thing. Better to have that to people getting infected.

The situation is this: There's a new virus out there. People are catching it. The sickness can be treated if detected on time. Measures against it are being taken. If you don't go to crowded places, if you use a surgical mask when out on the streets, if you wash your hands often, if you drink lots of water and take extra amounts of Vitamins, and if you refrain from handshaking people for a while, you are safe.

EDIT: The main purpose of my post was to address the comments made by Garcia in which he said that we shouldn't believe local media and what was overall situations inside hospitals. Just pointing that out.

Also, I'm also really tired about this flu scares. I remember how SARS was supposed to wipe out humanity like 3 years ago.

My guess is that it has more to do with the poor air quality/living arrangements in Mexico City.

Or that thousands of people in Mexico got it resulting in less than 100 deaths, which means if you have maybe 100 people in the US who have it there aren't necessarily deaths yet.

Shouldn't we know by tonight if this thing has actually spread more? I feel like reports should be coming in...

Possible, since the smog can be overwhelming at times around here, and that worsens every respiratory condition.

Disease! disease! spreading the disease.

Thread needs more 'The Stand' references

It's so weird how similar this feels to the beginning of fictional outbreaks. The Stand and World War Z come to mind.

Keep in mind that even the 1918 Spanish flu only killed like 2.5% of the people who were infected. Worst case, it's not like we're talking about the end of the world here. Millions dead might die, but chances are as an individual you would survive.

So my phone has been ringing off the hook today (friends wanting to hang out and have a beer)

Haven't answered it though. Staying inside for the time being.

TV, PC, and green tea for me.

And it effects undeveloped countries more then anyone. Less then a million died in the US and less then 500,000 died in the UK but like 20 million died in India.

Well, over a quarter of the entire United States was infected with the last virus. Given population levels, density, transportation, etc Western countries might even wind up hit harder this time. Assuming it goes anywhere.

And remember that the 1918 flu hit people with healthy immune systems the hardest. I read something yesterday that this could be a derivative of that same flu. I'll try to track down the link....

EDIT: My bad on repeating the link. I skimmed through most of the posts so I must have overlooked it.
