Virus not the deadly pandemic first feared, Canadian experts say

"It's not the killer pandemic strain, at least on the surface without more information, that we would have feared," said Dr. Gerald Evans, president of the Association of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease Canada.

"Yes, new virus, probably a lot of susceptible people around the world ... but if it's a pandemic, it may not be one associated with that horrendously huge mortality that was seen with previous ones."

See... I aint all doom and gloom :D

I bet the sample Canada and the US got isn't even the one that killed people in Mexico, might be just another one that we discovered as we sampled infected people more than usual because of all the deaths, and this would explain why there are no deaths outside of Mexico; because the confirmed cases outside of Mexico aren't from the strain that killed people.

Being unhygenic pisses me off so much. At work, when I see people who just go toilet and simply don't wash their hands, piss me off. I wash my hands all the time.

One of the call centres I worked for had a policy that if you didn't wash your hands after the toilet you got immediately fired. I applauded them for that, considering that all of the computers, keyboards, mice, etc were shared.

I saw someone wearing a mask on the train back from work (in Maryland). Sorta amusing but I don't know if I could say the guy was over-reacting.

I'm pretty sure that flying from Glasgow to London in 11 hours from now will be an interesting experience, maybe on par with flying to Schiphol two days after the terrorist attack on Glasgow Airport. I'm tempted to get a mask for going about in London
, even if it's just to protect me from those unwashed Londoners.

Funny story (well, maybe not, but definitely interesting): My coworker that sits next to me went to the Yucatan Penninsula about 3 weeks ago, came back and went down like a ton of bricks a few days later. The thing took the whole office with it, we all went down. I think 20 people were out for a few days in a row. I know I was... so who knows if that was this thing or not....

Orrrr it could just be that most of the deaths in Mexico have been early cases/late caught and the treatment path was still being worked out. This is why people going "omg 7% of people in mexico who have it are dead, 7% fatality rate!" is ridiculous. It's pretty easy to understand why fatalities of a new disease would be frontloaded like a bad comic book movie.

The 1918 pandemic also had waves, with several waves being deadly but some being mild (especially near the end of the pandemic). Hopefully this isn't the case but the fact that antivirals do seem to be having an effect is a good sign.

No... this is pretty much the only time I have ever feared for my life. and I am being completely honest.

Something about this thing just has me very scared. Logically I am over-reacting... I know that... but it doesn't mean that the current situation isn't serious.
You are seriously way overblowing this. You are literally scared for your life right now? Christ. :lol

A real pandemic is probably one of the biggest threats to our society... so yeah I am scared about this.

Though if I didn't live in a crowded city like New York... and was just living in the suburbs somewhere, then I probably wouldn't be paying much attention to this story right now.

:lol Man, we're going to seem like such dicks when this kills 50 million people.

36,000 die in the US annually from flu and flu-related illness and we freak out over this why?

Its not like swine flu is something new to the world, much less than the US

The large large majority of these deaths are from the already sick or elderly.

O shit :lol :lol CSI meme usually sucks but man when you get a good one: :lol :lol :lol

If(or until) there are deaths reported in the U.S and more and more cases get reported(especially if its near me), Im not really thinking about it. Just about every single year something like this occurs. The news reports it like death is imminent for all, people freak out, etc. It just happened last year with bird flu. Im not laughing about the poor folks that have died from the disease so far in Mexico, im laughing at the fact that more and more people think that "this is the BIG one!" Its NOT.

I honestly don't think there realistically will ever be a big one that kills millions, possibly billion(s), like some scientists predict. It's basically isolated in Mexico(the severe deadly strain anyway) and that's probably where it will stay. Now if farmers would just keep their pigs and ducks/chickens far away from each other flu's like this would almost never happen.

What are people actually saying that Obama spread this to Mexico? :lol

Ah, a good flu scare, just what the economy needs to people to buy pointless medical supplies that won't even protect them if the disease ever got that out of hand.

Took 3 days and we are sold out of medial masks state wide for Walgreens :lol

Swine Flu Found In NYC Office

"A staff member at 5 Times Square became ill Sunday after contact with a family member who had been exposed to the virus. She has now been treated, is resting at home and is doing well," employees were told in a company e-mail sent Monday.

Its good that she had only gotten it cause she was in direct contact with someone else who had it. And doing well is also good.
