What are people actually saying that Obama spread this to Mexico? :lol

no... just if this gets out of hand and Americans die because of this the repubs will make it look like it falls on his administration- just like shit that was out of the Bush administration's hands fell on them the libs screamed with glee that "it was all W's fault!". It's the usual political rhetoric- just depends on which side you stand on.

Swine Flu Unlikely to Affect the Economy

Two critical factors should prevent the current outbreak from spreading much further. The first is the sophisticated monitoring systems set up by the CDC in the United States, similar authorities in other countries, and the WHO on a global basis. The SARS outbreak in 2002 ended up killing less than 800 people, in part because of a near shutdown of world travel and minute-by-minute tracking of the progress of the disease around the world.

Secondly, there are several theories about why flu viruses do not spread with the rapidity and scale that they once did. One of the probable reasons is is that flu vaccines diminish the spread of the disease in general by cutting down on the spread of specific strains. This even extends to the vaccinations of animals that are the primary carriers of the infectious viruses. In addition, the CDC said that two major flu drugs, Tamiflu and Relenza, appear likely to diminish the severity of symptoms for the new strain, if taken in the first 48-hours of this Swine flu infection. That may be one of the reasons that public health officials, epidemiologists, and infectious disease specialists have indicated that people should not be overly concerned. One expert told NPR, "We've seen swine influenza in humans over the past several years, and in most cases, it's come from direct pig contact. This seems to be different," said Dr. Arnold Monto, from the University of Michigan. "I think we need to be careful and not apprehensive, but certainly paying attention to new developments as they proceed."

The odds that tens of thousands of people will die from the flu are low. Advances in medicine and public health policy have made a big difference in the ability to monitor emerging serious illnesses. The fact that the new disease seems not to be terribly virulent outside of Mexico is another factor that supports the opinion that this will not be a major epidemic. However, in the minds of some analysts, the world can still look forward to trillions of dollars in financial losses and an economic depression.

Really fantastic article, seems well informed and more honest then most of the shit you read today.

Yeah that article is right. We may have planes and shit now to spread it easier but I think that general hygiene is way more of a good thing then fast travel is a bad thing. Just washing your hands lowers the risk greatly. They were talking to some Mexican doctor on the news and he wasn't even wearing a mask (in the middle of Mexico City). He said all you have to do is remember to wash your hands. How many people in 1918 washed their hands or even showered on a daily basis? Spread of information so quick helps too. We wouldn't have been able to move nearly as fast as we did, at least in the states.

Guadalajara update:

Things went really smoothly today. State governor gave a speech around 2 PM reassuring that there were no confirmed cases of the swine flu on the state. Also, all schools, movie theaters, bars, strip clubs, clubs, and such are closed 'till May 6 -I'm sure local Blockbuster are having a great season :lol -

I went to my GF and to one of my friend's place and I counted aprox. 10 people wearing surgical mask. However, I did pass right in front of a health clinic and most of the people there were wearing them. Apparently, surgical mask are still sold out all over the city, and some people are claiming that they're being some for $2.50 pesos a pop -20ish american cents-.

Aside from that, everything is fine and the city is as busy as usual.

Does Mexico even have a competent enough health system to effective track the swine flu? It seems we cant even get good statistics of what is actually happening in the country. I mean isnt there more suspected deaths than actual confirmed cases in the country?

Even if the Mexican Health System has the exact number of confirmed cases and deaths, I think the situation is a lot worse than what the government wants us to believe, so they aren't releasing those numbers, not yet anyway.

I have family in mexico and one of my aunt's friend's daughter passed away today because of the flu =/

They've shut down every school and won't open again till June, at the earliest.

Kind of weird when it hits close to home.

I'm kinda worried why they're even still allowing flights in and out of Mexico at this point. Knowing competency level of hospitals in developing countries, not just Mexico mind you, I just don't trust the way things are handled.

This was the case with China where they didn't bother reporting to WHO until it started hitting other prominent places like Hong Kong.

I also don't like the media frenzy that's going on right now either. If thousands start dying in US soil or other countires outside of Mexico, then that's when I'll be seriously worried.

I am starting to think that this is a good sign that planes are still traveling in and out... if this was seriously becoming a major problem they would have shut them down by now I think.

So rumors of this being worse in mexico then the media lets on is bullshit I think.

I was a little freaked out today because everywhere I went everyone had those breathing masks.

And now whenever I see someone I think to myself "could that person be infected?"

I just finished watching the news here in Cali and a guy that came from Mexico went to the hospital because he thinks he may have it and is now hospitalized in the event that if he does, he won't spread it around. I believe his wife is also hospitalized.

they need to check their house and sanitize everything there.

Maybe the media will get what they want and 10 million people will drop dead tomorrow. The way they're reporting this thing, you'd think at LEAST a million people were dead already.

I predict by the end of the week, the World Health Organization will raise the pandemic alert level from 4, to 5, as more people in Mexico and elsewhere get sick and die. However, it won't get raised to 6, it'll just peak at 5, but this will be more than bad enough.

You say everyone was wearing masks? Mexico City only reported about 50%

Well not everyone but quite a lot of people. Those things are completely sold out in the whole city. Seriously you cant find one anywhere.

swine flu is really boring now. hurr hurr oh no noes we're going to die (if you're a mexican). now i see clearly that the swine flu was a gigantic conspiracy made by the governments to distract us from the economy.

I'm in Costa Rica, my dad works for a Mexican company that also has some business here, and they just ordered their "costa rican counterpart" to look for masks and send them to Mexico because they're totally sold out over there. Oh and I just got a cold after my dad came from a business meeting in Mexico like 2 weeks ago. I'M GONNA DIE. Or maybe it's the fact that I always get sick when the climate changes. hmmm.

I disagree. So far, we still haven't seen any deaths outside of the epicenter.

Amid the alarm, there was a spot of good news. The number of new cases reported by Mexico's largest government hospitals has been declining the past three days, Cordova said, from 141 on Saturday to 119 on Sunday and 110 Monday.

Really, for the epicenter of this outbreak, to see a decline like this is fantastic news right now. We're not out of the woods yet (the drop could be a result of Mexico locking things down) by any means, but this is a good sign.

Oh god it's coming right for me!

Well if it turns out to be not as big as everyone thought, that is great.
Sure, some people might think of it as everyone overacting, but that kind of reaction probably saved many lives. You have to take this shit seriously.

How old was the daughter?

"New Zealand reported Tuesday that 11 people who recently returned from Mexico contracted the virus. There are 43 more suspected cases in the country, officials said."

NEW THEORY

The disease started in New Zealand and the bastards took it to mexico.

Ok I'm back from the conference and I do have some new information:

The Mexican death toll is now officially 200, but both cases and deaths are actually believed to be much higher.

This is an H1H1 strain containing genetic information from both swine and avian flu.

This is believed to be a genetic "shift" rather than just a genetic "drift" meaning that the human population has completely or mostly no immunity at all.

Bit of breaking news: Another case of swine flu has just been confirmed here in the UK, about 30 minutes from me, in Paignton. The patient has been hospitalised.

There's good news and bad news: the good news is that there's sort of a 60/40 chance that this wave of the new strain is going to be relatively mild. The bad news is that a more severe wave or two are expected during this year.

The NHS is now saying that more likely than not this will be a global pandemic and the WHO is expected to increase the Phase level to 5 and then 6 shortly after within the next few days, if not tonight.

Because there is no explanation for why there have been no deaths outside of Mexico as far as we know, I can only say that we are slightly more likely than not to have a relatively mild first wave. Time will tell, if we get any number of deaths outside of Mexico within the next few days then expect to see the WHO Phase jump straight to 6 and for the masks to come out pretty much all over the world. Otherwise, business as usual.

The CEO of my company still wants to send people to Mexico (Saltillo) from our plant here in the US for a 5 day visit next week (that includes my boss). It's not even for anything important (they want to "fly the flag" and show support for the Mexican operations). :\
