Swine Flu pandemic approaches

I just drank a Corona. Does this mean I have the swine?

What we have here is an H1N1 type influenza but it's surface proteins have undergone a complete antigenic shift through the combination of genetic information from two very different viral strains, meaning that our immune systems won't be able to recognise it at all.

Every year people suffer seasonal flu because all influenza strains constantly undergo antigenic drift in which the mutations of the surface proteins allow it to establish an infection but are small enough or incomplete enough that the body can still get an immune response together pretty quickly.

Just a medical student, but infectious disease is my special interest area if you like, I plan on specialising in ID and TM.
 
Is it just me, or has there been no real news from Mexico in days?

I dont get how it went from 180+ dead, 2000+ infected, and reports coming in from jammed hospitals....

To 8 dead, 26 infected.

Did the government closures (schools, clubs, movies etc) work and its no longer spreading.
Or are they just hiding it?


Another example: Most of the americans that are sick had been to CANCUN recently.... but I havent seen a single report of anybody actually sick in Cancun, just mexico city. WTF

It's probably a mix of horrible management by government (sorry for the tautology) and horrible reporting by the media.

from what I heard doctors are refusing to talk to the media until they feel like it.
 
Well.. I'm fucked.. I'm a school bus driver. One of my students want on vacation to Mexico last week. So today she says, "my parents think I have swine flu.. but its just a cold." Here I've been in a tight ass bus (its a special ed bus) for the whole week with someone that might have swine flu.. I can't blame the kid for going to school, she probably didn't know any better. But goddamn her parents are either the dumbest or most irresponsible people on the face of the earth :(

If you SOMEHOW survive this, you will be one of the few lucky men who will have resistance to this virus and you will have the hard task of repopulating earth after the coming holocaust.

Egypt's reaction has everything to do with religion, and very little to do with science. The powers that be see an excuse to get rid of the unclean pigs.
 
Don't worry guys, we didn't all die this time around, but in the Fall we definitely will die! And if we don't then, it will definitely mutate by the spring!! And if we somehow escape our fate then, look out in the fall of 2010!
 
Well, I'm doomed. All of the schools in my area are closed for a few days because 2 children have cases of "probable" swine flu.

Either that, or kids found a new way to skip class.
 
Heh one of the schools closed in Houston was the middle school I attended, Hamilton Middle School. Doesn't really matter now, since im in college...just seems strange.
 
Has someone tied swine flu into the 2012 doomsday predictions with the Mayan calendar shit yet? Cause i'm really looking forward to that.

watch. it'll probably turn into some sort of banning of gaijin entry to the country.

sucks for the people who have jet and study abroad opportunities of that happens.
 
They just closed a school in town for a probable case. Hopefully there is a massive panic and the city shuts down for the next week or so.
 
If anything, I hope we use this as a learning and research opportunity. It's been awhile since we have seen a real pandemic, and while it may not be a very deadly one, there is much to be learned that could be applied to a future pandemic.

I just love using the word "pandemic". Has such a nice sci-fi feeling to it.
 
I work at a greenhouse and yesterday we had a customer come in and ask for the hottest pepper we had. I was all "what?". He said he didnt want to go to the local mexican grocery because he was scared he might get the swine so he came to us instead. :lol

The media is sure succeeding in scaring the shit out of some people, thats for sure.

When I was driving to work today I saw at least 3 different people driving their cars with one on.
 
in new york i've seen only two people with them on--both japanese tourists. proving once again what we all know: new yorkers are smarter than other americans
