God of War is what? You sit and watch a ton of scripted cutscenes and when you finally get to control you tap a button over and over to punch and hack shit? Where is the game? I think anyone who buys such a simple thing has to be a sucker.

See how easily you can misunderstand and be reductionist about something? Maybe there is something about Animal Crossing that speaks to the 22 million people who have bought it and enjoy it. Heck, maybe I'll go buy it now for spite. :messenger_smiling_horns:

I found the game surprisingly enjoyable for awhile, I did burn out on it after a month or 2 due to the slow content drip and lack of routines but it was a good time while it lasted. Was my first entry in the series, it's a relaxing charming experience.

Love Nintendo! Nice to know it is doing great. As a Sony fan I have to say that Nintendo games will always have a big spot in my heart.
I had the NES, SNES, N64 and soon I will buy s Switch. So... in this gen: Sony-Nintendo-Xbox.

Um, you kinda did. But whatever, mate.

AC looks like the most boring game ever and 22mil people bought that shit? i would say Nintendo fans are suckers for buying this but i said it before and got a warning so i'm not saying it this time no sir

but i guess the no 3rd party support for Switch is working great for Nintendo

Even if im not a fan of Animal Crossing (or Pokemon 🤢) its cool that these types of games have the potential to sell very well, appeal to kids, women as well as adults and even comfort them in these harsh times. All without typical hardcore gameplay realistic graphics or lots of violence

I finally bought a Switch, the first Nintendo system I've owned since the Gamecube 15 years ago, in March when Animal Crossing came out only to have my wife hijacked both since. I'd spent closed to a grand purchasing all the 1st party games, and haven't been able to play any of them yet. I've been hoping for a Pro version as my 2nd Switch purchase, but that looks increasing less likely that it will be coming out. Hopefully the Switch 2 will be backward compatible, and will be out in 3 years or so from now.

Twenty. Two. Million. And the games it outsold! Smash, Zelda, Pokémon, Mario Odyssey... could it overtake Mario Kart 8?

I think it's safe to say New Horizons is the best Animal Crossing yet, but clearly it had help this year.

I've been enjoying AC. Been playing it daily since release. Yeah, it has a lot of shortcomings and problems, specifically with its middling QOL features and "update" release schedule of content that should have been present from launch.

That said it's a relaxing game that I play with my little sister now and then. Not every game has to be a white-knuckle brawler affair, bruhs.

Now the real challenge starts now.
Nintendo already released all the big games they have.
Next Zelda, Next Mario, Next Pokemon, next animal Crossing, next smash and next mario kart won’t have the same effect in hardware.
Price cut and new models are the next step so Nintendo is entering on what’s the next new big thing? and this where Nintendo struggles mid way up to end.

Nintendo will also now compete with PS5 and to some extent xbox series x. The newest thing. 2021-2022 will be tougher for Switch.
Less 3rd party since big 3rd party will move on to the newest hardware.

The consoles from Sony and Microsoft will make little to no difference to Switch sales, the console appeals to a totally different demographic, the console has momentum and this will keep it in demand going forward, Nintendo just need to keep their first party output and indie titles coming to the machine, the console will sell over 100 million units, and as yet to receive a price cut.

Well, launch aligned, NSW is around 1.5 mil. ahead of PS4. Of course, PS4 has 1 more holiday season.
No PS4 is 2m ahead of the Switch launch aligned. Considering PS4 is $299 despite being six years old it'll surely get a price-drop soon.

It would be interesting to compare attach rates. Sounds like both are really high, but PlayStation was higher during lockdown.

That's FY aligned where PS4 has one more quarter than Switch, please read again.

In Quarterly or monthly sales aligned, Nintendo is tracking ahead of PS4 with PS4 had more 2 holiday quarters than Switch, the gap is going to be bigger than just 1.5M this time and PS4 launched aligned would never going to outpace Nintendo Switch from now.

From Nov. 2013. till June 2017 60 mil. PS4 has sold. That's 44 months :

NSW after 40 months ( from Mar. 2017 till June 2020 ) 61.4 mil.

Or this post.

Anyway, maybe i'm wrong.

Err sure OK, thanks for unerringly accurate extrapolation.

Regardless the Switch has sold really well, and as is Nintendo tradition sells a ton of first-party games. I very much doubt Switch will outsell the PS4 though as that will be getting a price-cut this year and sell gangbusters due to huge continued third-party support and engagement.

I wonder how many people are using animal cross like I'm using it. Mostly to safely hang out with family members(niece in my case) and just do normal stuff like watch fireworks and go swimming. (You know, stuff I can't currently do because of covid.)

Damn! Animal Crossing is beastly. I must admit I've never played an Animal Crossing game but those sales make me think I might be missing out on something 🤔

It's a game designed to be played for 30 mins a day. Sure you can play for more than 30 mins a day, but you need to be comfortable with that concept otherwise don't buy. If you like the idea of a game designed for you to pop in and out of for very brief moments (think of it like browsing your phone while you're waiting in a Call of Duty lobby), then this game is for you.

I'm a huge competitive gamer so it seems weird to say this but AC was one of the few games to capture my attention this year. It's such a good "in between" game. Just don't attempt to make it your "primary" game. This isn't something most regular gamers can play for 40 hours straight.

If you think to yourself "should I buy this or something like Last of Us 2" then you're doing it wrong. It should be something you buy in addition to another big game. Hope that helps!

Man c'mon. I'm not an Animal Crossing fan, but we know we aren't the target audience. It has its audience, and those numbers say they have a lot of them. Don't forget who Nintendo targets. Don't forget it's a family friendly device first, and it does a great job at it. My kids don't even know what Animal Crossing is and now one of them wants it, because it's simply cute to them. And I'm positive when my other kid sees it she'll want to play it too.

Quite the opposite. They have not even scratched the surface with respect to games. Moreover, the Switch isn’t directly competing against SNY and MS, so they should be fine.

What you mean?
It means, System seller like new Mario and Zelda will move hardware like yearly COD and yearly sport games.

New Pokemon also will move hardware sales no matter it's on the 3rd or 4th installment on the hardware as shown on 3ds where Sun and Moon moved 750k hardware in the US launched month despite being 3rd installment on lifeless 3ds.

Switch don't follow the same sales trajectory as the previous Nintendo console, there are many 10-20M sellers yet to be released.

Nintendo doesn't even need to do any aggressive promotion as Switch currently unable to meet the demand.

Sony needed to bundle 3 games(HZD, TLOU Remastered, and GOW) on $249 base PS4 last holiday in order to compete against full price Nintendo Switch and yet Nintendo Switch effortlessly sold above 2M in the US alone during last year December.

switch lite at 200 bucks is an aggressive point of entry in nintendo ecosystem.

Anyway, you can't really expect the same promotion when you have two products in diferent moments of their life cycle.

When all is said and done Sony got a slightly worse margin profit than Nintendo with a product that is almost 7 years old which is great scenario cause both products complement each other since Sony and Nintendo have different approaches and aim for different publics.

Oh it will. Media attention will be on to the new machine.
Switch is still riding to the Animal Crossing wave and with the pandemic.
That’s why I specifically Mentioned 2021-2022.

Nintendo’s main weakness is the 3rd oarty support. Up until now PS4 is still being supported by big 3rd party and Sony just released 2 big 1st party games hence they have the luxury of longevity.

As I mentioned all the big games was already released. You say price cut? they already have it in an unconventional way. Switch lite.
That’s already your entry point to play Switch’e big games. In my opinion it will not have the same effect as you are expecting it.

They still have quite a lot of unreleased games and unused IPs With even more development teams that have been quiet for some time now. 2021 will likely be among the best years for the Switch in terms of releases.
Well, if you look at the Wii, GameCube and Wii U, there have been some terrible draughts after the big franchises are released. We still have BotW 2, Metroid, Bayonetta and Pikmin at least, but if they release like 2 games a year, it's gonna get dry.

That said, Nintendo did change its development philosophies in the last-gen, and the new blood that is developing games now seems to be more active and productive.

Yeah, but the Wii also sold massive and it was extremely scarce at times on that console for fans even if the games sold well. The business is one thing, but for fans to be satisfied by the yearly output is another.

I gotta hand it to Nintendo, to carve out your own niche and print money in your own controlled eco-system after the disaster of the Wii-U is remarkable. While we argue about SSD's and Tflops Nintendo laughs because it's about gameplay it always has been!

You just explained why it sold so much. It's accessible for kids who barely know how to go hold a controller or casual gaming adults like AOC and other celebrities who don't normally game but need an endless loop to occupy themselves during quarantine. And then of course the usual Nintendo fans that love all their games cause they have Nintendo on them. Now normally that kinda stuff on that budget and with that simple gameplay would be free on an app store or something but Nintendo sticks to $60 and will never lower it but people buy it because of the brand name. Other companies should take note and keep games full priced if people are gonna go ahead and never force Nintendo to drop. Quite frankly that's what's kept from buying switch.

Slightly worse margin? Sony main income is from DLC/MTC not from hardware and 1st party softwares.

Nintendo made more profit for every Switch lite at $200 price point than Sony for every PS4 at $249 with 3 free 1st party games and also with many aggrasive promotions like Spidey $200 bundled, TLOU and UC4(More than 4 million free bundled in the US alone according to ZhugeEX) during 2013-2016.

Nintendo during Switch Era made nearly 80% of Sony total profits during PS4 era in half of the lifetime.

More like a large gap in profit margin between Sony and Nintendo.

Incredibly impressive numbers, particularily given the hardware production shortages throughout it's life.

Really glad to see Animal Crossing doing so well. Hadn't played an AC since the original on the GC and Didn't think I'd like it much but picked it up at launch and it's just so damn chill. It's just such a relaxing, no pressure feel good experience. I got hooked and put in a solid month+ before stepping away to play some other games, popped it back in the other week for an event and thoroughly appreciated the easy-going experience all over again. It can be digital crack if you get invested into some of the elements of it or it can be the most non-commital 5 minute escape.

Those evergreens are something else though. What's even more impressive is that unlike most other high sellers in that range, none of those games likely had a discount and were sold at full price. That's crazy money and testament to the quality of the games that they can continue to push those numbers, at full price, so long after release.

Also, really glad that Xenoblade Chronicles managed to push over a million. Awesome game and one of my favorite series. Hopefully it leads to a third.
