Take-Two CEO: Ps4 & Xbone full potential still far off

"We have yet to see entirely what the technology can allow," Strauss Zelnick, Rockstar CEO said during the 43rd Annual Technology, Media & Telecom Conference this week in New York City. "We've had a couple releases for new-gen, but I don't think we remotely have seen what can be done, and that's super exciting. And that speaks to many of our titles; hopefully all of our titles, ultimately."

Well, yeah.

Look how long it took for The Last of Us to grace the PS3.

This will probably be a short generation, but I can only imagine some of the stuff were gonna see six years from now.

O god, I hope they aren't around 6 years from now.

I've never seen someone refer to Strauss Zelnick as the CEO of R*. He's the CEO of Take-Two, R*'s parent company.

We know that R* probably won't release GTA6 til the end of the gen so they can sell it 3 times again. So we'll be able to compare the progress that was made then, if any. There'll probably be RDR2 and Max Payne 4 somewhere along the way as well.

He's at least 1% of R*, though.

;)

Then they'll also be able to port GTA6 to the PS5 and Xbox Two! Gotta get the cash, gotta get the dough.

My takeaway from this thread is that there are still people in the industry using the phrase "new-gen" to describe this generation of consoles, and that irritates me way more than it has any right to.

We've only really started to see the first round of current gen only games in the past couple months so it's easy to believe that there's a lot of improvement to be had.

And they said this gen will be shorter than before...
Yup lol, I've always said I expect this gen to be longer than last gen. I mean two full years into next gen and we'll still be getting cross gen games and remasters and people hope for a ps5/xbox two before 2018? Insane.

The 360 didn't really start getting pushed to its limits until its last year or two with Halo 4/GTA V and that was on seriously outdated hardware, anyone that thinks this gen with much more powerful hardware will be over with within 5-6 years is silly imo.

GTA5 took 5 years to develop, see you on PS5.

Not necessarily, this gen could end in 2018-19, I assume pre-production for GTA VI most have started almost immediately after GTA V released. So if they started in 2013, then we should expect the next GTA in 2018.

They still haven't even released a new game yet on the gen8.

Speaking of new games on the gen8, how about a new Midnight?

I do not know about techology for game programming but as far as I know PS4 , Xbone have lower specs than todays gaming PC , what I mean is that at this point we know what current console technology can allow since it was used on PCs time ago.

By example I do not thing we are going to see somethig that blows our mind next years compared with a gime like The Witcher 3 on PS4.

Lol

Yeah, because developers are going to be working magic with a midrange amd card from 2012 and a really crappy laptop cpu.

This isn't like pervious gens where people could squeeze extra power out of late optimization as devs learn to deal with the weird hardware the consoles have. Consoles today are basically midrange pcs with crap CPus and the same x86 architecture. There's no mysteries here. What you see is what get, and that's why ms is inventing shit to be solved with their silly hyping of dx12 on the bone.

There's a reason a 750 ti and an i3 is already outperforming 8th gen systems in benchmarks, and it has nothing to do with devs "not figuring it out" how to make games on the system yet.

No duh.

I remember every generation of consoles we hear about a developer bragging about utilizing 100% of said console and yet games come out years later that blows everything before it away. As time goes on they learn more tricks and abilities to pull off some really fantastic works. In the finale year or two of a consoles life the stuff that can be put out is truly amazing that no one thought capable of.

"We're using 100% of the system's capacity" and other such phrases have always been meaningless. A game that drops frames is by very definition using all available resources, just to little success, and optimisation in general is an endless road.

Don't you mean The Cloud? I mean, Phil himself has stated not to expect much out of DX12 on the X1.

I do agree that we won't see the same magnitude of improvements like last gen due to 1. The architecture being familiar right off the bat and 2. The hardware not being high-end like it was back then

But we will still see improvements, just hope no one expects something crazy like last time (From Resistance 1 to Killzone 3? That shit was cray).

Perhaps it has less to do with figuring out the technology, and more figuring out what to do with it.

Most of these devs put the vast majority of their engineering dollars into consoles, and now they need to learn what to do with this vast new power (even if it isn't that vast in the grand scheme of things).

Aren't the PS4 and XB1 supposed to be super easy to develop for? This isn't like last gen where Cell was completely new and it took devs a long time to get used to it

"We've had a couple releases for new-gen,"

Help me out here. GTA V, ummm....

Zelnick is the CEO of Take-Two. The other game is presumably Evolve since everything else 2K has released has been PS360-inclusive multiplatform from the off and The Handsome Jack Collection is little more than the PC versions of Borderlands 2 and TPS running at 1080p.

LOL

they are definitely going to release GTA6 at the end of the console cycle and make 3 different staggered releases of it

I can see R* tho try to add something "new" (or an old IP that people forgot they had) into the mix this gen.

not surprising thats what rockstar thinks. their big game is a ps3/xb360 port. of course they can do better than that.

The thread title is inaccurate, it's the Take-Two CEO, not Rockstar CEO. Whilst Take-Two's CEO is obviously in control of Rockstar, there is a distinction there.

FIFY

I'm very happy with my PS4 and hope it will stay another 5 years around as my main console

whatever rockstar does will blow people away. it still mind fucks me that they squeezed enough juice out of last ten console to do GTA V

I had someone tell me the PS4 was 3 year old tech. I said to him, "you do realize they just celebrated the 1st year of the PS4 this last November right?".

I think "like with most gens" that we'll get more games down the road that will allow us to remember this gen. Anyone remember the first year of 360? It was an incredible slow start until Oblivion and eventually Gears came out. There's already a handful of fighting games on the new consoles to boot. I'd say the tech is there to deliver games faster, but nothing is at its height. W3 is great, but it's also the beginning.

I even remember the PS2 took a while or a good solid year for those must have games to come out. The PS3 had developers complaining about programming for the console for the first year. I remember they said it was incredibly difficult and so forth.

If anything we'll see more surprises and announcements in the next couple of years. I think the tech and the way each company works will showcase a lot in the weeks to come. I even expect E3 to have more to it than last gen. Last gen felt like the games led them on stage to do other things than announce a game. Now I think we'll want to hear more announcements and those short pauses will be well worth the wait.

I doubt the boys in blue will want things to turn into Zynga over night either.

That's the CEO of Take-Two, not just Rockstar.

I think Gamespot did that on purpose so that they would get more clicks. If it said Take Two CEO people don't know what the company is. People go hot and heavy when "Rockstar Games" gets name drop.

"We've had a couple releases for new-gen,"

Help me out here. GTA V, ummm....
Strauss Zelnick is speaking from the perspective of Take Two CEO so when you look at the 2k Games side of things they have released decent amount of content.

Do not mention a Max Payne 3 follow up, don't get my hopes up.

Due to the bomba sales I'm at least hoping for a spiritual successor or something.
