Take-Two CEO: "THQ won't be around in six months".

Neither did I. :(

It looked pretty decent actually.

De Blob 2 was a good game. It was spectacular in 3D on the PS3, like a Pixar movie come to life. Really sad that the game didn't sell and Blue Tongue had to close.

I actually agree with him. Licensed games are a risk if negotiated wrong. I don't have much faith in THQ negotiating a good deal so they probably got burned quite a bit on it.

All I'm saying is that if Alex Garden wants to make 'that game' then no expense should be spared to make 'that game.'

THQ puts out some good games, I really hope he's wrong.

Also Darksiders is the best Zelda game ever made.

Says the guy that puts out one succesful IP every three to four years in one specific sand box genre? Besides this genre they make the bulk of thier money on NBA games. Their stock is dead water and they are next to go. Mark my words.

I don't think you understand what franchises TT owns, junior.

What platform did THQ make the bulk of its money? Wasn't it the GBA, DS, and Wii?

Their licensed games sold well on them no?

The UFC franchise backfired on them. First game was great commercial success then they tried to follow it up with a yearly sequel which underperformed massively. They gave the last UFC game much more time but it went to sell even less.

volition top 10 devs of this generation.

really? UFC3 i think debuted #1 in many territories.

Sad but most likely true words. But as someone already posted i've been amazed that they have kept going for so long. On the console front theres only a few games over the last decade which i have really enjoyed (Smackdown 2, Red Faction, Destroy all Humans being the examples).
Note: I've not played Darksiders yet...

Are you willing to bet your account?

Zelnick stated licensed properties -- something he has avoided in his career -- leaves publishers at the mercy of license holders. Even if a publisher does a great job on a property, it will have to renegotiate the license in a few years and the margins will decrease because it's being charged more money for a brand it built up in the space

That's actually a really good point. One of the best I've read from any CEO. If you do a good job with the license and make something people want to play, it sells well, therefore increasing it's value as a game property.

Then the company can say "fuck you we're going to take it somewhere else for more money unless you give us more - for building up the brand in the first place."

Kind of messed up to think about. Something that comes to mind, possibly, is the Chronicles of Riddick. A major, well received original XBox game off of a license that was known, but not major.

That's kind of a vicious cycle, but personally I would like to see Rockstar with a licensed game in the open world of some kind.

A Darksiders game with an MS budget worthy of challenging Zelda for real?

yesplz

MS marketing alone would elevate a lot of THQs IP, and as people are saying there would be no need to reup the licenses.

Yes lets alienate everyone that buys the games on pc and ps3 and soon Wii-u

Best case is THQ turn it around but if not I don't care what company buys them, 1st or 3rd party, it's better they are still going. If that means some fans don't have the right hardware (what ever it is) then thats a small price.

Aside from PC where I'm sure THQ games would still be released if bought by MS, alienating the competition is kind of the point of buying the company.

You take away WWE and UFC games and online services from the other consoles and you just struck a pretty big blow while elevating yourself.

Lets say that your comment about the sandbox genre was true, you would STILL be wrong in your three to four years remark...

but then again, your comment on the "one specific sand box genre" isn't true so you are wrong on both accounts.

I really hope if THQ goes down, Vigil gets picked up by someone. Recently started playing Darksiders and it's a fantastic game, would be a shame to see those guys out of work. What happens to the IP if THQ goes down and no one wants to pick it up?

I don't know about that. GTA5 alone will give them such a huge cash injection, I doubt they're going anywhere.

Ok Fine, you may have a point but for years they have been stagnant. ONE misfired GTA or Red Dead Redemption and they are toast.

As long as Relic continues to churn out Warhammer40k goodness im good. Still pisses me off there is no Space Marine 2 on the horizon.

OK, I forgot to add shooters and CIV. Still their buisness is unsustainable. Analyze their debt to equity ration. LOOk at their PE and their EPS. It's like they are about to die every quarter until a GTA type game is released.

Nintendo would actually be a good fit if they were looking to buy studios right now. THQ's remaining developers are very good at reaching exactly the segment of the game audience that Nintendo is weakest in.

Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure Nintendo isn't even THINKING about making that move, since they're (afaik) still not profitable on 3DS again, and are right about to spend all the money it takes to launch a console.

so do you buy thq stock in hopes of it being bought?

go for it! i am a risk taker. i've got a couple thousand shares.

i think they're a company worth fighting to try and keep alive because they do have some good properties with some talented developers. you can't let all of that just fade away into "bolivia" (m. tyson)

I place the blame entirely on Homefront and the draw thing for the Wii. Both were expensive as hell and brought down the entire company.

As a pc company THQ has a lot of potential. As a console company, not so much.

No company would buy THQ. If they wanted to do it, they already would have -- the company is dirt cheap and has a very low market cap.

No company is buying THQ because nobody wants to buy a sinking ship. Salvage a few of the parts once the ship has sunk? Sure.

Actually...it's not a bad idea. In a way, I wish Microsoft would offer to buy Vigil, Relic, and Volition--or just THQ all-together. It's not like it would be a lot of money, ha.

You guys are aware of how many studios MS has bought, dissolved, or turned into Kinect peddlers, right?

Of course a thread about THQ or Vigil turns into a Darksiders vs Zelda debate >.>

On Topic, THQ has been making incredibly bad decisions in the past few years (producing over a million of PS3/360 uDraw? WTF were they thinking?). None of their games have been major hits and some of their studios were heavily mismanaged. Writing was on the wall and I don't really see how they're going to make it, as sad as it is...

Also, why buy an entire company and inherit their debts? Better to go the Warner way and buy licenses/make a new studio when the company is dead.

Exactly why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?
