TALES FROM MY ASS: Durango rumors discussed by anonymous source

Silly question but any hope of the Durango also having BC with Xbox 1 games? I loved the first one and still have a lot of games. If so I'd buy it.

Of all the things you considered a red flag... That one stuck out the most?

Amazing the way almost any positive Xbox rumour is instantly branded fake, but negative ones are all but confirmed true.

Apparently because only the negative ones are "plausible"

Mind you, if you can be bothered digging through my post history, I was called crazy for saying the new consoles could have 2-4GB of RAM and they might reserve 1-2 for the OS. Apparently that wasn't plausible either.

But here we are.

Indeed.

Its probably because most of the positive Durango articles only seem realistic / plausable to people who don't have a good understanding of technology, all you have to do is to look at all the hardware tech based positive durango articles to see how crazy the stuff can get when everyone on the forum seems to suddenly turn into a EE who has knoweldge of ray-tray-sing chips and how all the magic 'custom bits' in the Durango will bring about over 100% more performance.

Whilst on the other hand the negatively hardware tech articles seem atleast rooted in reality, where the majority of us like to live and therefore they get less sarcastic posts and more comments.

Then again, if you guys want your dual ray tracing APU's go for it, but its not likely.

Yes, here we are facing a generation populated by 4GB consoles dedicating 50% of their memory to their OSes...

I think that we could in theory see the return of the BC Xbox games we got this generation on the 360.

WiiU is 2 with 1 for OS
Xbox is rumored 8 with 3 rumoured for OS

I wasn't that far off in principle. But you seem to have missed the point.

Credible vs. Noncredible sources. People playing the victim card seem to be ignoring this.

3 for the OS!? Isn't PS4 rumored to be 1 GB for OS? Would that point to Windows 8 RT or something along those lines?

Not to be an ass, but you only see it this way because of your own bias. It isn't like this at all. It's all dependant on where the rumours come from.

We'll only find out how credible they are at the official reveal.

Unless Don Mattrick gives these websites his seal of approval, nothing is really legit.

So VG Leaks is only credible when the Xbox is inferior to the PS4 in some way, or posting something negative?

Because in thus thread, they're now apparently lol worthy.

If Edge were to now run with this, would that be cool?

Believing internet required is just as implausible as believing all the hardware craziness.

We'll only find out how credible they are at the official reveal.

Use common sense and look for rumors that sound reasonable and coincide with other reasonable rumors and tada : this is the nextbox.
I'm pretty sure we all know the basic stuff (apart from name + price)

That's quite an interesting standard you've set there.

It is about credible sources vs non credible sources, but it's also about the volume of arrows pointing in the same direction. We've got a LOT of arrows pointing towards the new Xbox being always online. Even a Microsoft employee taking to Twitter to defend always online consoles. Then we had the respected Microsoft blogger confirm it was true.

But, we do have this new story from VG Leaks saying it's possibly not always online, etc. Trust me, I'd LOVE to hear the new Xbox isn't always online. I'd also love to hear it's fully backwards compatible with the 360 games. I'm just not confident any of that is true.

I didn't miss the point, but your numbers did. You're right if your point was that you predicted consoles would generally have much more memory and use a lot more memory for OSes, but that wasn't much of a prediction.

Not in hindsight, but the general consensus in that thread at the time was that this was unnecessary and borderline impossible.

Seriously, 3 for the OS is insane. Not in a bad way though. I just wonder how that could affect things if PS4 allows 7 GB for games.

There were a few different rumors that had the Xbox more powerful than ps4 by a significant amount. I don't know what's true but before vgleaks article the Xbox was pegged as more powerful by some. I'm just gonna keep an open mind and respond by purchasing whatever I want. People claiming it sucks before we officially know anything is getting annoying. If it sucks then whatever if its good I will purchase. I guess it's microsofts fault for making us wait so long for a reveal.

0% chance.

So you think an always on internet required to play console is realistic?

Yes

That's...not how it works man. If they turn out to be incorrect, they will lose some credibility though.

A lot of people just say that all rumors are rumors. While it's important to remember that nothing is 100% known until official word is given, it's also important to realize that all rumors are not created equally.

I'm really taken aback by how many people don't get this. Credibility is a thing and it's part of a healthy brain's function to discern that.

Didn't this rumor give itself a shelf life? We should know in a couple of days right?

Personally, I was in the "Nextbox is online required" camp because of Edge, the gaffers that backed up Edge, and then Paul Thurrott.
Then I saw the VGLeaks stuff last week claiming that there were 2 new Xboxs....one was the Durango and the other was an online required Xbox mini. It made total sense to me that there might have been some confusion and that some sources, insiders, or whatever we are calling them these days confused the two and thought the Durango was online required.

Now this pastebin stuff shits in the face of all that so I dont know what to think anymore.

Unless theres still an online required Xbox mini out there but the Durango doesnt need it for BC.

Well we now know VGleaks is about to lose some credibility for posting this article. lol

Online is required for devkits (to prevent people from selling them) at the moment and no one outside MS knows if this is also the case for the retail boxes.

Well maybe, maybe not. If they posted it then maybe they caught something in it that they knew to be true and assumed the guy knows what he's talking about.

The fact that it's on there does make it seem more possible than before, for me at least. I like rumors with shelf lives like this. It's another thing that adds credibility. We should know in a couple of days.

Is that just a thing that started this gen?

Why would someone have an online required devkit and just assume that the retail console would be the same....unless whoever started the rumor had some ulterior motives and just wanted to see the internet run wild for a few months. That original Edge rumor just gets fishier and fishier to me.

I think vgleaks tweeted yesterday that this rumor "seems legit"...whatever that means.

I wanted to ask yesterday but I forgot. This guy said that he originally posted this stuff to IGNs forums and that thread was wiped from history. That would make this seem credible, wouldnt it?
Does neogaf ever get similar requests from companies? Do they ever comply? Why is this thread allowed to exist for 1000+ replies? Not only that, but theres a new thread about it on IGNs forums thats still going on.

It's new that you need to be online to play your game on the devkit, yes.
I guess a dev just told EDGE about it ("We need to be online to play a game") and they misunderstoof it? don't know. There is still a chance you will need to be online for the retail unit too.

Pretty embarrassing for Edge if thats what happened.

It's clear you'll believe whatever is positive on the Microsoft front and remain skeptical the other way around. Why bother engaging in discussion when you make up arguments for other people to prove to yourself that you're right?

These are two totally different things, equating them is silly.

Seriously, 3 for the OS is insane. Not in a bad way though. I just wonder how that could affect things if PS4 allows 7 GB for games.

It may be 3GB for "other applications", but for the OS it is just impossible. The fullblown, non specialized version of win8 for PC uses less than half of that. I'm not even metioning WinRT.
Let's remember that on the current generation, MS had the OS with the most features and the smallest footprint. They know how to do an efficient OS on consoles, so if they reserve so much RAM, it will be for other reasons.

Microsoft studied the situation and is planning a reveal that essentially sends a big 'fuck you' to Sony.

So the below makes sense

- third party exclusive blockbuster "AAA" gameS (cannot stress this enough) to counter Sony's less than surprising game lineup.

- no forced always online, and they will milk it and stress that it was never planned

- full BC cause come the fuck on, this is the easiest opening to hit the PS4 with, and helps drive people to make a stress-free switch to the new Xbox

I think in the end we are going to end up with something close to the Document leak.

I posted about that yesterday, but the thread was moving pretty fast so I assume it just got lost in amongst all the posts.

I'm pretty sure this is the same guy that I made a post about around a month ago. He created a rather cryptic pastebin post and then posted about it on IGN. I was then linked to that IGN post by a friend, and then I posted it on GAF.

This is the link to the IGN post that seemingly has since been deleted.

This is what he said in the IGN post

I first tried posting this on Beyond 3D, but I guess a certain moderator wouldn't want me to do that, so I couldn't.

The best place to post this would be NeoGAF. But there's no way in hell I'll be posting it there, since if a mod really wanted to, they could easily find my registered email address and therefore find the company I work for (or even my name).

So I guess the next best place is here, since anyone can sign up with a free random email address.

Anyway, I guess I'll just post here exactly what I'd have said on B3D. It's not like I'm posting pics of Durango or anything, so don't get so excited, but this is something for you to think about.

Until the day comes at least....

Read it. Believe it. Then you might as well not bother replying since I won't be saying another word.

I mean that last part by the way. So ban me or whatever you want to do

This is the link to his first pastebin.

It was there where he first mentioned HMD glasses as well as the April 18th date

Can not tell with many words....will tell (a bit) with some pictures.

Me and my career if I'm caught talking about specifics:

What's this I'm reading about 'confirmed' leaks?

A taste of what you'll be seeing soon:
glasses_26.jpg

The reactions of Sony & MS fanboys after ALL the specs are known. See if you can guess which set of reactions match which set of fanboys:

So why has like ten different sources said it's always online for a year, if it's not true?

Kind of gives you an idea how gaming 'news' works a lot of the time. One site posts a rumour. Another site steals it and posts it without crediting that first site, just mentioning an 'anonymous source' that confirmed it for them. A third site credits the first and then cites the second anonymously as 'secondary sources' that confirmed the credibility of the original rumour to them.

And the snowball starts rolling.

Ahh thanks. I saw some talk of this yesterday but never made the connection.

How did you get superior specs from the last image? Last image makes no sense.

I think the last image is saying "scared faces = Sony fanboys, happy faces = MS fanboys"

But that pastebin post said a whole lot of nothing.

I know, but this most recent pastebin talks about another pastebin post that was posted on IGN and then posted on GAF

So yes, I originally made a post on pastebin that I then posted on IGN that has now mysteriously vanished from the internet.

That IGN post (that referenced the pastebin post) was also posted on NeoGAF. Though it didn't get much attention

So I'm pretty sure it's the same person.

Look at what he is saying....PS4 fanboys worried, Xbox fanboys cheerful.

He says the image portrays the reaction of fans on both sides... but the gif shows both characters smiling and then a scared reaction - both characters do that...and based on the Futurama episode they were excited and sort of disgusted at the same time..
