Team Fortress 2 is now free to play forever

I'm really liking this update(other than issues like the item server being down all the time or matchmaking not working, there's like a billion people using it). The matchmaking by far is the best thing I think, especially for new players. The crafting system got revamped, and while its kind of awkward, revealing all blueprints should help new players immensely. Looks like the fixed the crate issue of getting a crappy weapon by adding the strange value(would love a craftable way to get these). Like the revamped menu as well, much less convoluted compared to the previous one. Needs a few bug fixes but I think Valve did a good job with it. Can't wait to get some new weapons.

Scout (HARD):

Pyro (EASY EASY EASY): make it your first class. who cares about dying, it's about winning the round. run around and burn everything.

Soldier (EASY):

Demo (MEDIUM): sure you can spam nades, but you need skill to fight when enemies are close and in your face.

Heavy (EASY):

Engineer (EASY): build a turret, sit back and laugh. Good engies build warps and dispensers for the good of the team though.

Medic (Medium): easy to heal, hard to stay alive. You are #1 on the hit list all the time, everywhere.

Sniper (EASY): If you can point a dot at someones head and pull the trigger, you win. Watch the backstabs from spies. Should be easy for Quake 3 Arena railgun players. If you can't snipe a dude, play more Quake 3 Arena with the railgun.

Spy (HARD):

I think it's safe to say that most classes are fairly easy to pick up and play (with Spy being an exception). It would be more accurate to rate these classes by their skill caps, ie; how difficult is it to be very effective with this class. You can call Engie easy, but the really good Engie's can be the element that decides whether your team wins or not.

If you're a beginner, you should probably just pick a class with a lot of health and durability so you can see enough of the battle to start getting an idea about how things work. I would say Soldier or Heavy might be a good route to go.

Engie isn't a beginner's class because you need to know the maps to play well, and on some maps good (or bad) Engie play can win or lose the match. It's the one class that will get you yelled at if you screw up royally, in my experience.

EDIT: Well, terribad Medic play can have that effect too, but not so often in my experience.

Promo weapons are always available after the game they are promoting gets released.

By purchasing the game or through drops?...Ive bought Shogun after it was out for a while and did not get any items...I will be buying the Witcher 2 soon and was curious about that too.

You can get the items instantly if you preorder the game, but if you don't, you have to wait till after the game is released before it drops, and then a little while longer before they release the blueprint.

Genuine weapons can only be gotten through preorders, not after. You can get non-genuine versions by drop, crafting, and/or trading.

Those games always have something that says "Preorder before "insert date here" and get those TF2 items.", if you buy a promo game after that you won't get the items. But they always become available after that date through drops, etc.

I'm new to Steam. Would like to play with some Gaffers on this. Can you PM me if you have Skype or something?

Why would anyone need Skype? You realize Steam has private chat right?

I know absolutely nothing about Steam. Would be faster to learn all I need to know via IM. Thanks for volunteering thetrin =)

no, it is not to safe to say that. In the beginning, you will suck with demo. you will suck with engineer. you will suck as a scout trying to get a kills. you will suck as a sniper, getting owned by spies and other snipers who know the maps and are better and faster than you.

4 classes (Soldier/Heavy/Pyro/Medic) are somewhat easy to pick up and become decent enough to not want to uninstall the game. The others range from medium to difficult and can quickly induce ragequits.

fuck it, can't find any servers, dissabled the firewall, the AV and tried a fix someone suggested on the forums

can't be bothered to do anything more since from what I have played with bots it isn't worth my time or patience

sorry to hear. with 70,000+ online at the same time, it's reasonable to expect unusually heavy load (and yes, 70,000 people on at the same time represents "heavy load". Maybe you should skip day 1? It's something like going to a restaurant at 6:00 on a holiday, you know? Wait times go up.

this is not the correct response. It's a game that you have to learn to become effective at.

I know gamers like instant gratification...but you're going to need a little more patience than this. It's the best FPS game this generation by a good measure.

Oh I strongly disagree.

It is hard to be engie. You need to know the map to place turrets well. And the sentry is often more to protect the teleporters & dispensers than for attacking. If you are an engie and you are not putting down teleporters then you are an asshole. Other people are often not playing engineer because they are relying on you to build that tele & dispenser. And when you don't, people are going to be bitching with good reason.

beginners should stick with heavy, medic, soldier, and sniper.

Pyros need to use the air blast and beginners don't do that.

Are you secretly trying to get people to uninstall the game?

The Pyro can no longer just run around and burn things. If you want a kill you generally need to ambush, so running around in the open is stupid. The Pyro doesn't do nearly as much damage as you seem to think.

They also probably function better as a support class. You need to use airblast to put out fires, protect sentries, neutralize uber, etc...

The Pyro is still a fairly easy class to jump into and play, but if you actually want to be a good Pyro there is significantly more to it than W + M1.

Who said anything about running around in the open? You can drop down on dudes, set them on fire and run, just like it says in the game in the tips section. You don't have to aim with a pyro.

"The Pyro doesn't do nearly as much damage as you seem to think." The Back Burner would like to disagree.

Guys here is the true difficulty list

Easy: Medic, Heavy, Soldier
Medium: Demo, Pyro, Engie
Hard: Sniper, Spy, Scout

Stick with easy or medium if its your first try.

The Back Burner needs to be unlocked. Your guide was for people just jumping into the game, so I'd assume they would only have the vanilla loadouts.

Also if you want damage don't go with Back Burner. Go with Degreaser + Axetinguisher.

Well even with the flamethrower, it still does pretty decent damage, and with random crits, it takes down heavies fast. And my guide was an alteration of another person's guide.

Now also, I am talking about easy classes to play and get kills with on pickup. I'm not talking about being effective. Got to learn how to kill before you learn how to kill effectively.

As with some others, I have to disagree that medic is a beginner class. It's one of the most crucial classes and in the hands of a newb can be terribly ineffective.

The professor speks are awesome. Engy can have glasses on top of glasses and pyro has glasses on top of goggles. Pretty hilarious.

The Pyro can rarely take down a Heavy by himself, even if he does get the element of surprise. Hell, even Axetinguisher needs two shots to take down a Heavy (or is that only if they are overhealed?).

With heavies, you just burn , air push, repeat. I see it daily and do it daily and it happens to me as a heavy all the time. Not rare at all.

eh, not really. if you see people with low health, you go heal them. stay out of danger as much as is reasonable. Know the charging pecking order (Heavy >> Soldier/Pyro >> others) and stick with it.

It's not the easiest, but I think it's learning curve is much shorter than most.

a reasonable list. But I'd still put Engie in the "Hard" section. In fact, I think it's the hardest class to master. Constant upkeep of teleporters (the tide-turners if ever there was one), and good placements of sentries takes a LOT of time to understand and get good at managing.

Hell, the setup time when on defense is some of the most important time for an Engineer...and if they don't know what they're doing, they'll feel behind the 8-ball the entire match.

If you're actually trying to kill a heavy and they're not almost dead already, air blasting is the worst thing you can do. You're better off staying as close as possible and running around them.

No, that is fail. Seriously major fail if you think engies are the hardest to master.

Engie is a hard class to master, but it's got a pretty low barrier for entry: you can fairly easily get at least a few kills as an Engie without even being able to aim. It's got one of the lowest skill floors and highest skill ceilings.

Can someone confirm the file size for this game?
