Tearaway - The Modern Age Mario 64

Rear touchpad gameplay puts me off. Maybe if I try it out, I might change my mind... but I don't plan on picking this up anytime soon. Shame because I haven't bought a Vita game in almost a year, nothing really interests me except for that music festival game.

It's on a handheld. Does resolution really matter?

Yes, I'm a sad that the game is only out on a handheld...

Most definetly. The difference between a native-res game like killzone and an upscaled game, like uncharted is a night and day difference.

I'd say it makes more of a difference than consoles, since you're so close to the screen. When it's native, it looks smooth as fuck with insane IQ. when it's not, it can look pretty ugly. Though it can be covered up nicely with good AA, like MGS collection.

I laughed at some of replies to this thread. Thinking that Super Mario 64 will never be topped is rather short sighted. This game can't be the best forever regardless of Tearaway's quality.

God I hope not. I'd rather Tearaway actually be a good platformer. Mario 64 was a game more focused on exploration than actual platforming, and it wasn't even close to one of the best platformers of it's time. But it was a game that wowed because of what it did new in terms of open 3D environments. It doesn't make it a good platformer. It makes it revolutionary in terms of what it did new for 3D gaming. There's a reason Nintendo themselves have abandoned that style of gameplay in favour of more tightly focused platformers like the Galaxy games and 3D Land/World.

The Tearaway comparison is dumb. It will not wow the way Mario 64 did with being the big leap to 3D, and it will not have the same style of open gameplay. It will be a more tightly crafted linear platforming experience from what I've seen, and thank christ for that. Platformers are best when linear.

Yeah. Actually, it was already topped by its sequel, Super Mario Sunshine and then by Super Mario Galaxy, etc. Super Mario 64 is quite mediocre compared to its successors. So yeah, it might be topped by Tearaway as well. Game looks incredibly fun and engaging, now it only needs a good soundtrack and a decent level design and there you have another game that is better than Super Mario 64.
Honestly, the people saying that Super Mario 64 is the best game ever baffles me. Super Mario World? Maybe, but 64? That game is SO flawed.

The OP statement, it made me believe Tearaway was a platformer for a short amount of time :(

And it's so fucking beautiful. Sony should really begins to lead its first party devs in efficient directions, rather than letting them doing whatever they want to do. This game would have been an animal crossing like with a strong community and some more user creation aspect, it could have single handedly save Vita in Japan.

I had more fun playing Sunshine than any Mario game to date.

Game looks pretty good, but It'll probably bomb so I'll wait for it to show up on Playstation Plus. Holiday is crowded enough for me without it.

If it comes to PS3/PS4, I'll buy it, otherwise I'll pass. No Sony handhelds for me, thank you.

From what I've played the game wouldn't work on either. It's really built around the touch-aspects, some major reworking would be needed.

The OP makes me really angry.

Then you probably need to take some time away from videogames (and/or internet based discussion of videogames) so you can realize that they're just games & people having varying opinions on them isn't really a big deal.

Yeah, the thing I loved about playing it was all the touch stuff, the camera usage & the fact there's this cool little world in the palm of your hands.

LBP PSP/Vita felt like a portable version of a game (obviously) This feels like a game that's supposed to be portable and DEFINITELY is supposed to be on Vita.

Why do these Sony platformer threads always have to namedrop Mario? The games are awesome enough on their own.

Nintendo envy I guess. :-/
I'm with you though, the game looks brilliant and doesn't need to be compared to a timeless classic just to get noticed.
Those screens look absolutely gorgeous. Hopefully the gameplay will be just as imaginative and fun as the screens make it appear.

The OP makes me really angry.

Honestly? Let's have a look at some symptoms of anger, shall we?

Unconscious tensing of muscles, especially in the face and neck.
Teeth grinding.
Breathing rate increases dramatically.
Face turns red and veins start to become visible due to an increase in blood pressure.
Face turns pale.
Sweating.
Feeling hot or cold.
Shaking in the hands.
Goosebumps.
Heart rate increases.

Are you actually experiencing one or more of those symptoms after reading the OP?

You should relax a little. Maybe play some videogames?

Going to assume this is just a great exaggeration because someone said Puppeteer out-Nintendos Nintendo and when I played that with that expectation, I was extremely disappointed. These games can be good on their own, they don't need to be comparisons or analogs.

Honestly? Tearaway is the game that is making me consider getting a Vita, but this thread title? Really?

It is almost like saying that Star Wars Episode I Phantom Menace is (was) going to be the Modern The Empire Strikes Back. Tearaway does look amazing, but I would wait before making such bold statements.

Also, you lost the opportunity to discuss about the game when most people only talk about the title.

If the idea that the OP is trying to articulate is that Tearaway looks to follow in the whimsical outdoorsy free-roaming style of Mario 64, then I'm in agreeance.

Probably the intent. The kind of middle-school teasing that's not against the rules but is just enough to get a reaction so they can be like "lololo rage issues" when you say something.

If people are so confident that it's a silly comparison, why are they getting mad? If I hear someone making that claim that up-and-coming-band-X are the new Beatles, I'm going to laugh rather than get angry about it.

Well they tried with TLOU.
TLOU was better than any RE released this gen IMO...I smell hate from ya blood!!!! lol

agreed...don't get this Mario 64 obsession outside of the great jump in the way you played the game. But it's not a game I wanna go back to like Ocarina of Time, this looks to play nothing like it.

Obviously thread title is to get people interesting in the game, even if it comes with the negativity. Vita has another must-play I believe. Few and far in between, but at least there coming lol...Gravity Rush 2, SS2, and maybe that first party MH-like game next up?

I'm sure Tearaway is good. But Mario 64 good? Taking this with a pinch of salt.
In one end being as good as a 17 year old game isn't quite a compliment. The biggest question, btw, is the control. If it's like LBP where floaty and inaccurate, that 17 year old game will beat it badly. I'll be reading reviews carefully before buying it.

Can't wait for the eventual PS3/PS4 release. (I hope)

I can't see it happening. The game seems to be designed with the Vita hardware specifically in mind.

If the game gets any traction (which is sadly unlikely) then maybe a sequel would be Cross Play, but I don't see this getting ported.

Man, its pathetic how protective some people are of Nintendo games.

Look, its the "modern age Mario 64" in that its a beautiful colorful platforming game that is not purely platforming, but rather about a sense of adventures and whimsy. It makes you think, "I've never seem anything like this before" and it justifies the systems control scheme. You don't have to pick out every element from Mario 64 that's different. Of course it won't sell nearly as well. Of course it wont have as big an impact on the industry (other systems are incapable of much of the gameplay in the game). Its just about a feeling of wonder and excitement, with a gameplay style that harkens back to the days of Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie.

The only Vita game that reminds of SM64 is Gravity Rush because of the focus on traversal in an open environment. And the partial transformation they're using in the sequel for parkour-esque moves only cements that feeling.

Tearaway looks nifty in a different way.

Tearaway looks like tremendous fun. I love that special MM quirkiness. Gonna have to grab this on Vita even though I'll be smack in the middle of trying to enjoy the PS4.

It makes me sad laughing that people are seem to be genuinely 'offended' by the thread title. Really? Chill out.

Will definitely be getting this on my Vita. Thread title seems like an attention grabber more than anything else.

I still can't figure out what the big deal is with this game. It looks about as thoroughly unimpressive as a game can get and after the disappointments that Killzone Mercenary and Batman Blackgate were I'm not about to take a 3rd straight risk on a Vita game that never looked interesting to begin with.

I think it was a perfectly fine title. The game takes me back to the days of Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie. Exploring, platforming, and adventuring in a world you've never seen before and with a gameplay style that justifies the control inputs. People are acting like protective babies, as if somebody took their toy away.

...In what possible way? All you've said in the OP is basically that it "looks good". It's like Mario 64 in that kids will feel happy when playing it? What? From what I can tell, not only is the gameplay completely different, the visual styles are basically polar opposites. I cannot speak to the quality of Tearaway but I can't help but feel you've done a disservice with the bait thread title. If you wanted to pimp Tearaway you should have just done that.

I say don't knock it til you try it.

See Gravity Rush for example, you'd think it's all about gimmicky controls but turns out they all work really well. Gyroscope aiming in particular is fantastic and I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't tried myself.
