Tenchu is dead, long live the king

Camera is terrible and if you hold crawl near an object it automatically makes you stand up against it, but otherwise Spike's Shinobido Imashime has brought the fun back into stealth ninja games.

If you're like me and tired of the slow "watch enemies and then creep out and kill them" formula, you'll like the approach to this game. Instead of slow creeping, it's all about SPEED. You have a crazy run button that makes you can insanely fast and it's quiet enough that enemies don't hear it. So you just spot a guy, dash at his back and stealth kill. You can also auto stealth kill while hanging real quick so you speed around and run on walls and double jump to get above or behind guys and then quickly take them out. Surrounded by enemies? No problem. Just speed run away from them, get on a roof, run behind them, drop down and stealth kill the guy furthest back. Repeat this as their numbers drop. Feels just like the movies. Game does a great job at letting you know where enemies are and if they can see you, plus instead of guessing if you're ok for a stealth kill you get a very apparent cue that you can auto-stealth kill by hitting triangle so no messing up and leaving yourself open.

Like the Way of the Samurai games and Samurai Western, the game's not perfect by a long shot. But also like those games, it's damn fun. Graphics are better than all the Tenchu games as well, plus it's got a top-notch level creator. Early thoughts are positive.

Good to know it turned out right. From the first time I saw it I thought it was going to end up better than the Tenchu games. It seemed be Tenchu with more polish. There's already an expansion coming that'll be based on fan made levels and a PSP version.

chances of this coming to america? slim?

Well almost all their games have come over so I'd think it's pretty likely.

Oh and I think the official site had an English version IIRC which would mean 100% yes.

Ever since Aquire started doing their own thing, I've been waiting for them to finally delivier the kickace ninja game that they always could. Glad to hear its not crappy.

Hope the American publisher has the good sense to keep a Japanese language track, ninja do not speak poorly dubbed english!

p.s. Samurai Western was friggin fun.

Holy shit, :lol at the growl-screaming guy in the song they play for the trailer! He's speaking Engrish, I think, but I can't make it out.

This game looks just like Tenchu, only faster paced and slightly prettier. I like the male protagonist's design, but I'm not too keen on the femme. That stealth kill where he grabbed the guy's foot while hanging from a ledge and iced him while still hanging on with one arm was pretty bad-ass. Yeah, I think I'll give this game a spin.

Hmm, that sounds interesting.

I've seen this around, but never really gave it a look. Might have to check it out!

That...was extremely awesome looking. How have I never heard of this before? One localization, please!

YES.

It's about time someone lit a fire under Tenchu's ass. The developers of that series have been asleep at the wheel for years. Glad to see Acquire showing them how to do it right. The website talks about a lot of nifty features like opening doors up Splinter Cell style and slicing through shoji walls. They also mention a physics system, wonder how that will play out.

It's part of a nice little bidding war right now.

Can you tell us who the bidders are? The usual suspects (Atlus, NIS, Agetec, etc.) or a big publisher?

I LOVED the first Tenchu on PSX but haven't played any this generations games. I'm downloading this trailer now, sounds very exciting. I hope that there are lots of arterial sprays. :)

its hard to get a feel for the gameplay from that vid, but if its a faster paced Tenchu i'll have to give it a shot. The graphics are pretty bad though.

Looks exactly like Tenchu to me. I wouldn't tell the difference if you told me it was a new sequel. I don't know what everyone is getting hyped about from that video, unless the only reason is because there's Japanese shit everywhere and that makes them excited about anything.

yeah WTF was up with the music though? Nothnig says Ninja stealth kills like cheesy japanese butt rock.

How playable is the Japanese version for someone who doesn't speak or read Japanese?
I have no idea what is going on, but after some fumbling about I got the gist of the menus.

Brief impressions:

Ninjas and wells don't mix. I fell to my death on two occasions: on my first encounter with a well I mistook it for a secret entrance, and the second time I was trying to hurl a guard's corpse in there but flipped down with him.

Coming off RE4, this is a pretty ugly game to look at. The animations could stand to be smoother. Imashime moves as if he was running on ice, similar to how players in NBA Live move. This looks particularly stupid when dashing, since he slips whenever he shifts his weight. The animations as a whole would have benefitted from more frames, because in terms of form they look just fine but they have this unexplainable quality that detracts from the realultimatepower factor. The physics are a joke, corpses crumple or sprawl open as if they were in an entirely separate time-space dimension. It's as strange as it is amusing to look at.

On a positive note, dashing into stealth kills is pretty cool. I don't think I could tire of that. I'd advise against importing unless you're really big on Tenchu. This is essentially the exact same game with a dash button. I do wish I could understand what was going on, all I've done so far is infiltrate some lord's manor and inquired about some stupid magical stone with strange origins. I totally thought I was going to bust in there and start lopping off heads, but instead all you do is make conversation and go home. How weak is that?

Yeah, I wouldn't recommend importing either. But I'd gotten completely sick of Tenchu at this point, and this game made Tenchu-like gameplay fun again...so it's a good time.

Wow, this actually looks fun. I don't know why all you people are complaining about graphics, I thought they looked fine for what they are. Hopefully this'll get a domestic release, I'd love to play it.

This is good to hear; I picked the game up last week but only tried it for a few minutes. It felt strange not having a grappling hook, but I agree that the game feels like a faster-paced Tenchu. It was pretty cool having a ton of guards chasing you down at this pace, too.

IMO Tenchu Fatal Shadows looks better, but this game does more with its environments, since you can interact with objects like crates and such, and can have more characters on screen at one time. A.I. has the potential to be better, too.

Don't know if Shinobido is going to turn out better than Tenchu Fatal Shadows, but I'm looking forward to playing more.

I think you do get a grappling hook and I hear you just point at a building an hit the button and it'll take you up there without having to manually aim and grab. I didn't play it far enough to find out for myself though.

Bebpo, did you not check your inventory after the intro level? The grappling hook is there, and it works just like Tenchu's. ^_^; You have to select your items before you do a level and then stop to equip them first...kind of annoying. Also this game definitely does NOT stay locked at 30fps; it gets pretty damn slow when there's a lot of enemies on screen.

Anyway, I've read some impressions at gamefaqs; the game sounds awesome, with you working for three different feuding lords and expanding upon/laying traps at your home base, which can get attacked while you are away doing missions. There's also another playable character that you get after you finish the game.

Shinobido is like Otogi in that it uses a lot of old-style Japanese, and it is FILLED with Kanji, but I still think someone who has played through a Japanese Tenchu could play this game, and I'm sure a walkthrough will be out there soon anyway. My Japanese sucks, but I still feel pretty comfortable playing the missions and navigating the menus, and it seems pretty obvious what you need to do once the mission starts.

Right now, I still prefer Fatal Shadows to Shinobido, but Shinobido is definitely worth a look if you like Tenchu.

The song in the trailer posted by Solid kind of sounds like it's from Do As Infinity... can anyone confirm this?

Ah, so that's why they let you access the level editor from within the game. I had thought the home base was just for shits and giggles. That it can get attacked sounds pretty neat, makes me wonder how it plays out. Guess I'd better play some more!

Takuan, the stuff I read at Gamefaqs has me really psyched to delve into Shinobido now. It just sounds awesome.

I'd love to use the level editor to recreate some Tenchu levels, too.
