Terraria 2 Confirmed

“I’m super excited about starting Terraria 2,” he said, voice suddenly ringing with a pointed intensity. “It’s a ways out, but it’s gonna have a lot in common with the original. It’s gonna be quite different as well. I really want to expand on the whole Terraria universe.”

“There’s a lot of stuff I’m locked into with Terraria. The way loot works, the way character progression works. In Terraria 2, I really want to have infinite worlds so you’re not just stuck to one world. You can travel anywhere. I want more biome diversity in that, too. There’s a lot of stuff [I want to add and change].”

And a little Terraria 1 news:

“I’d say this is probably gonna be the last seven-month update [to the original],” he chuckled. “But there’s a lot of stuff that I didn’t have the time to put into this one. For instance, there’s no final endgame boss. So I plan on, within the next month or two, finishing the endgame progression. I also have some ideas for a Halloween update I’d like to do too. I think people will get a kick out of that. So there might be a few more updates, maybe three or four months out.”

Oh boy. Starbound vs Terraria 2

I thought starbound was basically terraria 2 but with way more to it? What's the point of an actual terraria 2?

Because Starbound is headed by the original artist of Terraria. I assume if there is ever going to be a Terraria 2, it's going to be via the original programmer.

Redigit's version? Starbound's initial idea was based on Redigit's future of Terraria. However Tiy, sprite artist for terraria, left relogic and formed chucklefish to do starbound.

So completely different teams/ companies.

Yeah I get that much, but I meant it seems extremely redundant to have a terraria 2 when it seems like starbound is the same game but with a much larger scope. That IS terraria 2 to me. The person/people behind terraria 2 should come up with a new idea and game.

Makes me happy. Have almost 100 hours in Terraria. This way if Starbound doesn't catch my interest I'll have another fallback.

So what happened there, btw? Was there a falling out between them?

Andrew Spinks, aka Re-Logic, developed Terraria. Finn Brice, aka Tiy, did the art alongside another fellow who helped after the launch of the game. My memory is a little hazy so I could be wrong on that account.

As far as I know there was no fallout. It was simply a matter of Spinks saying "okay, I've done all I can with Terraria, I'm calling it a day and want to be with my kids and wife." Brice moved on and took what made Terraria the beast that it was and formulated his own monster-to-be via Starbound.

For all intents and purposes Spinks had retired from the programming scene. Spending time with family and other issues were cited. For his reason to return and talk about a Terraria 2 is up to the interpretation of the gods. A huge patch recently hit Terraria which took the game in to new avenues and, as any creator or artist can attest to, it surely made him reconsider his original options. Some would argue otherwise. Whether he saw the amount of money pumped in to Starbound's pre-release is another matter entirely.

But why not? Now I get more games in a genre I love.

Think of Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. Why didn't From just make a new game after Demon's Souls instead of Dark Souls? I'm glad they didn't, as Dark is awesome, and if Sony were to do a Demon's 2, I'd be just as happy.

More games in a genre I love, by the people who helped shape that genre are always welcome. I don't care for Minecraft, but Terraria grabbed me, and I'm super excited fir Starbound and now Terraria 2.

Most unexpected announcement in quite a while for me. Feels sort of odd too, I mean, how much further can he possibly expand the game? Is it just going to be infinite worlds and more loot, blocks and enemies?

I think I would have preferred it if he tried something completely new and made a different game instead.

Yeah. A Terraria with some new unique features in a different setting would be cool.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. Very interesting stuff. This explains why I just assumed Starbound was being developed by the same guys. The more you know I guess. Now I wonder how good the gameplay in Starbound will be.

I guess it's somewhat safe to say Terraria 2 will be ok as far as gameplay goes but I worry about how good it will look. One of the most appealing aspects of the original Terraria is how charming and colorful the art style is. I hope he can replicate it or get an artist to come up with something equally as appealing.

Laughing hard if Terraria 2 comes out before Starbound.

He essentially made the original Terraria in about four months, so it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility. Sounds like he is going to re-do the engine for Terraria to expand it's capabilities, so assuming he uses a lot fhe same code but just updates the engine to allow infinite scrolling worlds, plus some new effects and scripting and such, maybe even dimensions (alternate worlds), and if he re-uses a lot of the graphic files but adds new tiles and sounds and music, yeah it's not completely unrealistic (at this point) to think that he might beat Starbound out. It would be a much lesser game than Starbound, of course, but a sequel nonetheless.

That would be damned hilarious

I actually meant something entirely new, as in a different genre, not another sandbox builder.

Besides, "Terraria in a different setting" is just what Starbound is :P

I dont know about you but i know more than just Fantasy and Sci-fi.

But i cant imagine something differently than Sandbox from them. Its just hard to imagine.

Oh geez. I don't even know where I'm gonna get the time to do all the Terraria expansion content as it is.

Great news, though. Terraria is awesome.

Cool. I played the hell out of Terraria when it hit PSN. Awesome game.

I'm totally down for both Starbound and Terraria 2.

He did not retire. He was taking a break because his son had just been born, and he wanted to be with his wife and newborn baby. He also 'abandoned' Terraria, because while it was his 'dream game' it was also the game he made while learning to code, so he had a bunch of issues with it, and his true dream was never realized. He wanted to start on a sequel or spiritual successor to it after he returned from his break in order to better realize that dream, and use what he had learned from coding the first game in the next one. He felt bad about abandoning it, and said that he wasn't opposed to making more updates to Terraria, but since Tiy left, he didn't think he'd be able to do any, and he was also a little concerned about Terraria's future with Starbound being made as a 'potential competitor'.

All of this is from a long post he made on the Terraria forums a while back.

Should be an interesting heads-up battle once Starbound releases vs Terraria 2. Two key people behind the original Terraria making their own followup, perfect for a showdown.

What are the benefits of making a Terraria 2 over updating Terraria 1?

Depending on how the engine was designed and how big the changes he wants to make are, it could well be easier to rewrite major systems from scratch rather than trying to bolt functionality onto the old ones. Programmers, as a rule, are seldom content with their own work.

From a design standpoint, changing T1 in any significant way at this point risks alienating the fans. Better to make changes in a sequel where it's easier to experiment and people will be more willing to accept differences.

And there's the money, yes. New games get more press than updates, too.

yeah i know - this thread is kinda old. But Re-logic announced today Terraria: Otherworld. They will mix the terraria-formula with some rpg/strategy-elements.

Official trailer is here on YT and here is the official website.

Posted here because i can't create new threads.
