TESIV: Oblivion - So you want to start using mods, eh?

DRock said:
I'm running the steam version so oblivion is installed under the steam directory in program files. The install for OOO isn't an exe. I used about 6 OMODS based on the guide linked in the OP.

Going to try the bash patch now.

I noticed you're running OOO 1.33b LITE patch. You shouldn't, it's just for users of the LITE version of OOO (which doesn't really exist anymore). You're using the FULL version. Remove it and all of the OOO stuff, then re-install only OOO 1.33+1.34b5 patch. It could very well be the source of the problem.

Another tip: You're running Oblivion XP 4.1.5. There's actually a guy making newer versions, and the latest one is this one, 4.1.8. It completely replaces 4.1.5, so uninstall 4.1.5, remove the omod (if you want, personally I like it nice and tidy :P) and activate 4.1.8 instead.

Ok so this is the deal. I want to install natural enviroments and I know it will most likely conflict so I wanna know if that can be fixed.

This are the big graphical mods Im using that are most likely to conflict:

Code:
Qarl Texture Pack III Ω
LOD Landscape thing
Bomret Shivering Islands textures
Natural environments
Unique Landscapes
Really AEVWD
Enhanced Water HD (plus SI Addon) + Water Blur
TES4LODGen
All natural
Animated Windows Lightning System

And also: OOO
I know that it will probably conflict with enhanced water, and that Unique landscapes is made with it in mind, but what about ALl natural and the lighting system?

You can't use both all natural and natural environments since they do pretty much the same thing. NE is very old so i don't know why you'd want to use it over AN anyway.

Edit: you might be able to use the natural habitat component from NE, but i'm not sure.

I'm having a problem... since I installed All Natural, either Oblivion XP and more importantly, OBGE, won't load when I launch the game.
Without OBGE my game pretty much looks like vanilla Oblivion :( Of course I tried to disable All Natural in OBMM but it didn't solve the problem. How do I get my good old modded Oblivion back ? :(

Aight thanks bro.

On the other hand, OBGE has been a source of constant frustration. I originally installed it and had a game breaking glitch whenever I got hit. I deleted the dll file and installed it again and i thought it was fixed, but i got the same problem again eventually.

Then I downloaded it again, this time I installed shaders. Turns out that the shaders break the game whenever I run them. the game works for like 3 seconds and then it just freezes, and have to alt-tab quit

8800GT with a QuadCore and XP 32 bit here. So I don't think thats the problem.

Edit: nope, i can't get it to work. Why do I need OBGE anyways? Is it really that necesary so I spend more time and energy trying to fix it?

If the sound is still working, it's just the SSAO shader loading. It can be pretty long.

Ok yeah, you were right, it was just loading for way too long.

However, I still have the initial problem, whenever I get hit the screen fucks up

My comp can't handle obge, so i don't have much experiencr with it. You'll have to decide for yourself if you need the shaders or not.

Thanks D3RANG3D and Ledsen, I've finally got it fixed.

I found that the textures and meshes that weren't loading are exclusive to the OOO full version. I'm guessing because I installed that LITE patch it screwed things up where these files weren't being loaded into my game. I deactivated and deleted all OOO omods, redownloaded and installed based on the guide again and now it is working. I also found a few other mistakes I did last night when following the guide
I was a little drunk last night, bad idea
. The only reason I installed the LITE patch was based on this page.

I'm just happy to finally get it working. Now to actually play :D

Awesome :D that page you're linking... Looks like an oversight by the guy who wrote it. It says earlier in the guide to only install the lite patch if you're using the lite version. I'll note it in the op. Also, did you get the newer version of ob xp i linked you to?

Yup, don't know how I missed that newer version. I just googled it and used the first tesnexus.com link.

Installed the game again and a lot of the mods mentioned here, with a few other random ones I found. Loaded up fine and having fun :)

I'm getting some giant yellow "you don't have these meshes!" errors with some plants. I'm not too sure what is causing it, though. I have OOO and enhanced vegies. Could those two be conflicting?

Also, after nearly a week of tweaking and fucking around, only to have finished quests up to leaving the prison, I think I'll finally play the game now. Some of these mods were totally not worth the effort.

I think so, post your load order.

Man I've been playing the hell out of this game over the last week after spending nearly three whole days modding it. It's amazing how much better the game is now.

However, I think I'm going to have to up the difficulty slider because with Deadly Reflex installed my character is basically God. Bows are essentially like implementing Sniper Rifles into Oblivion. I'm almost constantly in Sneak Mode, taking out baddies from hundreds of yards away with a single arrow, ranking in boat loads of EXP. I'm like the Golgo 13 of archery, it's insane. :lol

If I decide to make a new character I think I'll go for more of a Spellsword type to make things a bit more challenging for me. But I can't deny how much fun I'm having regardless. :D

No one ? :(

I finally installed everything! And most of it was without problems too. Almost no compatibility bug of any kind even though I have a lot of mods.

This is what I ended up installing:

Code:
Graphical overhauls:
Qarl Texture Pack III Ω
LOD Landscape 4092 + Koldorn Noise
Bomret Shivering Islands textures
Unique Landscapes
Better cities
Really AEVWD
Enhanced Water HD (plus SI Addon)
TES4LODGen
All natural
Animated Windows Lightning System

Small little graphical fixes
Book Jackets + SI + DLC
Mangler’s equipment and Ammo
Kafei’s better rings and amulets
Better NightSky
Better gold
Better Horse eyes
Azura Star
Kalikut better glass armor and weapons
Rusty items and fine weapons
Better staffs
CM Better Wine + SI addon
Better Beer bottles
Female Finery Texture Replacer
Doffdillas potions recolored + Better potion bottles
Improved Signs Complete
Improved Trees & Flora 1 & 2
Improved Fruits Vegetables & Meat
Better looking tools
Improved soul gems
Real Lava
Mike clothes replacer

Better models:
Natural Faces
Corean Hair and Elaborate eyes merged

UI:
Darnified UI Ω
Skill Perk desctiption enhancement
Loading Screens Theme replacer

Other:
Unofficial Oblivion Patch Ω
OOO Ω
Imperial Furniture
Reznod maniquees
Harvest Flora

Gameplay changes
No psychic guards HARDER
Attack & Hide Ω

Everything works (though I haven't tested every feature there shouldn't be much problems I think) and it looks great. My FPS's are really sucking though, but I'm gonna upgrade my graphic cards as soon as I find some in stock (going from a 8800GT to a GTX570). After that, I'm gonna put some Antialiasing, open the cities, and add the OBGE support.

It was a long process, and I want to thank Ledsen specially for the support and for helping me solve some of the problems I encountered.

I decided to opt out of body replacers, I was most certainly gonna install them since they were a huge improvement in Morrowind but I don't see the point here. The models are fine, and you don't see naked characters often. In the end its just a nudity thing which I don't care for.

Anyways, the small little touches really add a lot, the graphical overhauls make everything look much better than Vanilla, unique landscapes and better cities really give the world more personality, and OOO makes the game actually playable.

It really amazes me how much a community can improve a game and to all of the persons I will never meet, that made this possible, I am thankful for.

It's one of three that I know of but, I don't know what you have installed.

Oblivion XP

OBGE

Screen Controls

So I'm about to go through Oblivion for the very first time! Yes, I know I'm late to the party. I bought the GOTY edition on Steam, which gives me the Shivering Isles and one other expansion which I don't remember off the top of my head.

My computer isn't particularly strong, so I'm not looking for any graphical mods. What would you recommend as must-have gameplay mods?

New issue I found last night after playing for about 6 hours. I'm at work right now so I won't be able to troubleshoot until I get home in about 7 hours, but I figured I'd post my issue here to see if anyone has an idea.

On the WEST side of Chorrol, just beyond the church, the buildings are completely missing/invisible except for the doors. If I click on the doors I can get inside the buildings and it looks fine inside, but outside I can walk right through where the buildings should be so I'm guessing the meshes are missing completely or didn't load. The wall beyond the houses on the west side that border the City is missing also. Very strange.

I have not added any other mods since my previous issue above, besides updating Oblivion XP.

EDIT: Meant west side, not east.

Here is a map of the affected area circled in red.

Chorrol-Map.jpg

I found a torrent that's supposed to install FCOM automatically, basically saving you the trouble of having to manually install each thing on your own.

My question is, what is the best order in installing the FCOM pre-compiled build, the unofficial patches, and the script extender? I'm using Steam version by the way.

aside from the ones listed in the OP

Quest Award Leveling (there's one for Shivering Isles too) - in oblivion the game kind of punishes you for doing some quests too early by giving you a level dependent reward (usually you have to be level 25+ to get the best version) this just removes that and as you reach that level it "upgrades" your item

Did some more reading; doesn't the OOO mod take care of this and more?

Thanks for all the thanks, guys :) Happy to help!

See d3rang3d's post. To me it looks like the OB XP box, are you using that? If so, you might have accidentally toggled the box to stay even when there's no message on screen, or something went wrong. Should be fixable easily, check the OB XP readme to see how to edit the .ini.

-Unofficial Oblivion Patch 3.2.0
-Unofficial Official Mods Patch v15
-Latest Unofficial Oblivion Patch Supplementals (they release new versions of this all the time, but you'll need 3.2.0 as a base). Should be installed AFTER UOMP v15, just like it's listed here.
-Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch 1.4
-Lowpoly grass+lowpoly grass for SI

-Chase Camera Mod (fixes the stupid mouse delay in 3rd person)
-Darnified UI (essential for making the UI suitable for PC)
-Map Marker Overhaul (you can now place your own map markers)

Basically the ones from the OP that aren't graphical upgrades. Also if you want, OOO and Oblivion XP. There are tons more of course, but those are the ones I use and consider pretty basic.

Mods here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=25209619&postcount=224

Yes, your original Oblivion .BSA files will have had their date reset to 2010, which is bad. Move all .BSA files EXCEPT the ones that start with "Oblivion -" out of your Oblivion folder (there are quite a few of them with your setup), then go into OBMM -> utilities -> archive invalidation and press "reset bsa timestamps". Then move the bsa files back. Now do the archive invalidation process as you normally would.

If any of your mods replaces a file from the original, and in turn was now replaced by Steam, then you will also have problems. Shouldn't be serious though, since most mods don't actually replace anything from the original game(not even texture mods, they "replace" files that sit comfortably inside Textures.bsa). Just do the steps above and you should be fine. If you notice anything weird, ask again.

Seems like it's OBGE doing it, as I followed what the readme said for Oblivion XP, and also tried deactivating the OMOD for Oblivion XP and the box was still there.

I took a quick glance through the two OBGE readmes with no luck to finding a solution, I'll have to try again after I get back from lectures

Check your oblivion folder you might have installed OBSE wrong. If you see a folder like 019b in oblivions root folder cut and paste all the dll's, etc. to the root folder, it could also be installed to your data folder it should be installed in your oblivion folder.

Did you make a shaderlist.txt? What about the newest version of Oblivion Script Extender? I use OBGE + Screen Effects the patch is here

Heres the Authors thread on Bethesdas forums with info for the shaderslist.txt here.

Yes I have a shaderlist (only using three shaders : Normal AA, DoF and Godrays), and I have the newest version of OBSE...
Really don't understand what the problem is, everything was working perfectly fine (I played something like 50hours of the game with OBGE) until I installed All Natural...

For OBGE : like I said without it the visual difference is huge. No godrays, no DoF, no normalAA... my game now looks like vanilla oblivion, textures aside (the Q3 pack is still working). As for Oblivion XP is concerned, there's always a little sound when you load your save saying it's been loaded, with your XP bar being displayed at this moment. It's not happening anymore. Honestly I didn't do anything except installing/uninstalling All Natural. I tried to save my game on a new slot too, it didn't help.

You're talking of the pluggin support ? It never worked before, that's the reason why I used a shaderlist. And yes to BOSS. I'll try using the plugin support when I get back from work though, thanks for the advice.

So since I've never played this game before, should I install OOO? Or just play vanilla Oblivion?

vanilla oblivion is horrible but that's coming from my perspective of having done majority of the game (main storyline, all factions etc.) but the flipside is OOO at the beginning is pretty tough since there's no "go here for low level dungeons/areas" outside of the tutorial which itself is too easy

anyway I decided to start a new game and make a magic caster-holy crap i'm having a blast(no pun intended) I was surprised I could do the leyawin mage's guild recommendation quest at level 3 althought it involved a bunch of kiting and a lot of time :3 (probably easier if I had the gold to potion spam but I couldn't due to not having a lot of gold)

So I just got home and started up Oblivion to start troubleshooting. Now all the buildings are back, hooray :D .

Must have been some sort of streaming glitch or something with the game or my hardware. I was playing for about 4 hours straight last night.

i downloaded Qarl TP3 texture set from tesnexus and it comes with 11 omods, i activate them all and my textures don't change at all. Anyone else have this problem? am i missing an omod or am i installing the 11 moods incorrectly? every other mod that i install works fine except this one, i think it has something to do with the splitting

Get it from here in one file and a second file for the patch.

You also need this patch if you are using the unofficial patches.

Okay; I'll give it a shot :)

Here's my current mod list:

  • Official Mod: Shivering Isles
  • Official Mod: Knights
  • Unofficial Oblivion Patch 3.20
  • Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch 1.40
  • Unofficial Official Mods Patch v1.5
  • Low Poly Grass
  • DarNified UI 1.3.2
  • Map Marker Overhaul 3.8

And now I'll be adding OOO to the list and that will probably be it.

Getting nervous about load order; will BOSS be able to sort it out for me?

You forgot UOP supplementals, to be installed after UOMP 1.5. And yes, trust in the BOSS. Follow the OOO installation guide I link in the OP, you'll have to download a few more mods with OOO.

You know, I really like OOO but I wish that you could disable the extra quests and stuff since it really puts me off the experience.

Having some characters speak dialog, and others be silent (and have lines that do not fit) half the time is weird. There is also a problem with the faction stuff I think, interfering with some quest.

So I'm in anvil and for stepping into a pirate ship, the pirates now attack me on sight. I was unsure if this was on the vanilla version or if its from the OOO. But then I find out that I actually have to go to a ship to complete a quest (DLC), but if I go in I get attacked by pirates. Makes no sense.

I'm not sure if these is from better citties, from Unique Landscapes or something else but outside anvil, there is a pit where you can fall (and survive) and you can't get out. Not game breaking but when stuff like this happens, I have to stop thinking about the game and start thinking "mmmm, which mod could be the source of this problem?".

I download these mods so that I can be more immersed in the experience, but these moments really take me out of it.

Other than these problems, I like it though, makes the game make sense and you actually feel rewards and progressions when lurking a cave, defeating an enemy against all odds and getting a great piece of equipment.

Edit - NVmind, figured it out. I was being retarded. :lol

In other news, OBMM makes mods so much easier to deal with. Good stuff. Thankfully not had to use WryeBash yet, I have nightmares from trying to use that to install FCOM convergence last year, I failed miserable.

I know this thread isn't about gameplay but I'd rather bump a current thread than an old OT for a small question:

I just created a new character that I intend to be a mage. I pretty much only want to be a glass cannon and only cast spells so I don't care about armor or weapons. My question is how can I efficiently get started? I figure I should join the mage's guild and start killing creatures in the world to get gold but where can I buy some good robes or a nice staff? Where can I learn spells?

I don't care about the main quest but I'll do it if I need to. Basically what can I do right off the bat to get me started as a powerful mage?

I know this thread isn't about gameplay but I'd rather bump a current thread than an old OT for a small question:

I just created a new character that I intend to be a mage. I pretty much only want to be a glass cannon and only cast spells so I don't care about armor or weapons. My question is how can I efficiently get started? I figure I should join the mage's guild and start killing creatures in the world to get gold but where can I buy some good robes or a nice staff? Where can I learn spells?

I've never played a pure mage, but from what I've read, they're pretty much completely gimped. Conjuration is supposed to be useful though. Sorry for not having anything more useful :( Appropriately enough though, there are mods to fix it :lol One of the biggest ones is called "LAME" or "Less Annoying Magic Experience (v 1.7)". There's also one called "Supreme Magicka Update (0.89b/0.90 RC2)", but they're not compatible so in that case you'll have to choose one.
