TESIV: Oblivion - So you want to start using mods, eh?

I'm so lost in this, I have Oblivion GotY and I want to play it before Skyrim. I want way prettier characters for NPCs and PCs (wouldn't mind playing as Sylvanas from the first link) and way better world textures + general fixes and bugs. I would also like to get rid of rainforest/forest/constant grassland crap.

Can anyone recommend me bare minimum of mods I should install? Or should I prepare for 2-3 days of tweaking stuff?

Did you read the OP? All you asked for is there.

Was in the process of reading it when I asked, I was hoping there might be some sort of all-powerful OMOD mod combining everything. Thanks a lot for great guide, it really answers all of my questions! I will try it all tomorrow, I hope I can get it done right the first time.

Can you tell me which mods were used to create "Sylvanas" in the first image? Is it a mix of body mods + custom armor?

I'm in bad shape guys. Oblivion shuts down shortly after the Bethesda logo, even after I reset all data to default, and even after I re-installed it...three times.

Is there something I am forgetting to delete that might be screwing up my game, even after a clean install? Steam version btw.

Not deleting old save game data can cause that to happen the saves should be in C:\Users\CurrentUser\Documents\My Games\Oblivion\Saves
Make a backup just in case that isn't the problem

I'd just like to say thanks so much to Ledsen for this amazing guide! Now I have a beautiful utopia to explore as a non-abominable woman.

I cannot get Oblivion to start. First time it crashed after I skipped Bethesda logo, now it won't even go that far. That is both with OBSE and by using Oblivion.exe. I tried ImperialInPeril's idea - there were in fact some old saves, deleted them, same thing.

Oblivion with SI and KotN mods + official patch. All external programs are installed, OBGE was installed using Wrye.

Any ideas?

EDIT: I will try to install everything again while skipping OBGE, since some users reported similar problems.

EDIT2: Everything runs fine, including OBGE. The problem was old ini files from 2008. I had to not only delete old saves, but the whole My Games/Oblivion folder.

Wow, Oscuros is great. Even the first dungeon outside of the sewers is difficult and forcing me to retreat. Can't wait until I find some good loot!
I did spend about an hour trying to figure out why I couldn't open certain chests though :/ Not a big fan of that feature

Glad you got something out of it :)

I don't know, I hate static backgrounds :(

It is great indeed, but I agree that the lockpick/lockbash feature is very unelegant (for those who don't know, you crouch to pick a lock, if you don't crouch when you activate the lock it will glow purple, which means that for the next few seconds you will be able to bash it with your weapon).

I don't know what I did wrong, but I just can't get the texture packs to work. I got darnified and a few other little things working, but whenever I load a new game, it either crashes to dekstop, or is vanilla.

I'll have to do a clean reinstall, but at the moment I have neither the patience nor the bandwidth for such a thing.

How did you install them? They're very simple, so I doubt they're causing your crashes.

+1 Oscuro's mod is awesome. In the history of PC game mods, it's a gold medalist.

I didn't think it made the game impossibly hard or anything, but obviously you feel less powerful. But the rewards are better. Nothing like exploring areas way above your level. Where enemies can one hit kill you, but the loot is super awesome. I remember clearing out one of the new set piece dungeons in the mod, one involving one of the new factions, and I did it at a far lower level than I probably should have, but used some great strategy and tactics and at the end battle pulled off an awesome feat. It felt like I was role playing, vanilla Oblivion's dungeons are easy and boring, but just having Oscuro's hand placed encounters and loot completely changed the feel of the game. I highly the recommended mod. Good choice.

Well I got it installed and a bunch of mods installed, but I am crashing whenever I hit the T key to wait. The wait process starts, and just as I am about to resume the game, it crashes. Anyone ever experience this?

You have to give is your mod list first.

Sorry was really tired when I wrote that. I did more testing and am finding that it is only really happening in the Imperial City. I started waiting in 1 hour batches and it went fine, until a character popped up in front of me after one of the 1 hour waits and I crashed.

Here are my mods:

Better Cities
OOO
Qarls
Darnified UI
Deadly Reflex
Unnecessary Violence
HGEC Body
Let There Be Darkness
Low Poly Grass
Marts Monster Mod
Oblivion XP
Unique Landscapes
Elsewyr

Hm, I've no idea why it would do that, none of those mods except seem like they would affect the "wait" function... but you're using OBSE, right? I'm assuming things like Deadly Reflex requires it. Could have something to do with that. Also, have you used BOSS to fix your load order and check for any known conflicts/info (check the OP)?

I do have OBSE installed and I did install and run BOSS.

I was also getting crashes leaving the Imperial City over the bridge the other day, and just now I had a crash leaving Chorrol. I am probably going to just wipe it all out and try again at another time.

I decided to give oblivion modding another crack and this guide has been an excellent help. Everything's almost running perfectly except for some reason All Natural doesn't seem to want to run with HDR. Ive installed it as an OMOD and merged the cells and in my bashed patch, aside from disabling All Natural I'm unsure of how to get HDR back, it really takes alot out of the scene when its not present.

///edit problem has appeared to fix itself, im unsure how or why, but after combining all natural with immersive interiors, the hdr came back :/

That's strange, I don't use MGE so I wouldn't know about any incompatabilities, but glad it fixed itself :)

Does anyone here play with a companion mod? Which are the best, non creepy (korean mmo-faced girls with skimpy outfits) ones?

Ruined-Tail's Tale is a brilliant quest focused companion mod. That Swedish one is pretty good too (Vilja, was it?).

Thanks! Vilja is pretty good for roleplayers and newcomers who wanted to try OOO since a companion is helpful. You can leave her somewhere if you want to get more challenge.

Also, is there any mods that let me change my character's look after I made it?

There's also that mod that lets you make an NPC be a follower as long as your disposition is high towards that NPC. You can even change their equipment, and even pay them for services. I forgot the name of the mod though.

Press "`" to bring up the console, then type "showracemenu" and press "`" again to take down console.

Nice, will try this once I get home.

Now, did anyone here tried the Viconia companion? I'm trying to, but it requires The Underdark mod which itself requires the Mage Equipment 21 mod which conflicts with OOO. I have been avoiding Wrye Bash all this time, does this mean I have to dip in? I really don't want to break my install :(

I'm not sure if this bug still exists but just incase as it can mess a character up: don't hit Done after you've edited your character or your stats will all be reset. Open the console again after editing and save the game (either by typing 'save SaveGameName' or hitting Esc), then reload that save.

As for Viconia I think Underdark only needs the meshes and textures of the Mage Equipment mod, you shouldn't need to use the .esp (which is where the OOO incompatibility is coming from).

OBGE likes to mess with me sadly, so looks like Realistic Water it is then.

Speaking of which, does those "Better Cities" retexture mods conflict with Qarl's?

Does anyone have any experience with the Qarls 3 OMOD? I think I've done all the steps correctly (activated with OBMM, hit archive invalidated, done the texture option, run the game) but the textures don't appear to have well, appeared. No error messages or anything along the way.

Don't lose any sleep over it, I really don't mind. But if anyone's had the same issue and fixed it I'd be delighted.

If I just want to use only one mod (Qarl's Texture Pack 3) what needs to be done? Do I have to bother with any external programs or can I just drop the mod where the game exe. is?

Youve probably missed à step, try doing it over.

Just shove the Meshes and Textures folders into the games Data folder.

Yes, but you can install Qarls as a base and just install the Better Cities textures over it without any issues, whatever Better Cities doesn't replace will still be covered by Qarls.

Ahh okay, thanks. Might end up using those then.

I actually overwrote the texture files when installing Qarl rather than the typical OMOD.

Awesome thanks. So just to be sure, no file dates need changing? Also can I use an existing save file or do I need to start a new game?

Technically you're going to overwrite the existing textures and such.

Speaking of which, what does "cleaning" a mod mean?

Quite fortunate that this thread resurfaced now.

I think I will skip skyrim for a few months and let the game become stable and patched.

In the meantime I will be playing oblivion with mods.

Well that didn't work very well.

I backed up the original folders that were going to be overwritten. After sticking in the two new folders with the mods, steam gave me a popup for first time setup when trying to start oblivion even though I've played it before. Then I got a BSOD, followed by another BSOD on my next attempt....

This is what I'm going to do too. Oblivion with mods (+ other games of course) is probably good enough for a few months, when Skyrim is all patched and the mods community are back in full force. That's when I'm going to upgrade my rig for Skyrim.

Removing any unneeded entries in the .esp using something like TES4Edit. The construction set is pretty notorious for marking things as 'edited' even though they remain unchanged, which can bloat up a plugin and sometimes cause compatibility problems.

Hmm... now Oblivion starts up but then closes immediately =/

I have all the mods in the OP.
Number one cause of instant crashes is missing master files. One of the esps you are using has a required esm file that you don't have. You can use something like Wrye Bash to look through your load order and check each esps master list till you find one that pops up red, or do it the longer way by turning off every mod then turning them on one by one, starting up the game each time to make sure it runs.
