TF2 Engineer update incoming?

Engineer is now a fun class to play. Gone is the tedious nature of explode/rebuild.

Is it too powerful? I'm not sure. Remember, *both* sides get this new ability. My impression is that it ups the requirement for teamwork (i.e., medic + pyro/demo) to break through. I think that's good with the people and level I play at, but maybe would be a bit tough at a more beginner level.

I'm finding myself using my guns much more, which is cool. Because I can setup my gear quickly by moving it, I can move out and do some damage as well, then return to hit my gear.

I'll be curious to see what it's like once the patch settles down. Right now it's crazy because there are so many engies, but I wonder if it'll stay like that after a week or two. There are sentries everywhere right now, but I think that will decrease at least a bit..

Nothing new here, just a few quick thoughts:

Wrangler: I really like it. It seems to have semi-auto-aim, which makes for some jerky targeting sometimes, but it's a nice way to keep a sentry focused and protected, take out targets out of range, etc.

Gunslinger: It feels like something is missing. It's hard to say what, really. That said, Mini-Sentries aren't too hot by themselves, even if you're ready to run and gun, but they work great as compliments to other sentries, that much I can say for sure. It's probably my imagination, but they seem to auto-target enemies a little faster. One other thing is that I know the fist crits every third swing (or hit?), but I haven't caught what the animation effect is for that, and I don't know if missed swings count toward a crit. Also, Bionic Commando Engineer.

Frontier Justice: This seems more like a "my defense sentry just got blown up, but I got out of the blast range in time" type of weapon. It's fine for what it is, an Engineer one-shotted me with a crit from almost full heath at a decent distance away, so it has the power. I kind of wish the crits lasted past death, but it's not realistic to expect that.

Moving Sentries: God yes. On Double Cross I had to build a sentry to guard the moved intel. When it went back, I could just pick up the sentry and carry it over, and within a few seconds my Level 3 was guarding it again. I will say on Attack-Defend maps, it can box in the Defense side pretty hard, if Attack can keep scooting the sentries forward every time they make progress. They pretty much take over tunnels that way. I don't think carrying Mini-Sentries should slow down the Engineer as much as a Level 3.

I don't have a Southern Hospitality yet.

Man people getting the unlocks very quick again. It will take me at least one week because I want to unlock them during normal play. Probably longer because engie is my least played class.

Go Demo/Soldier and have a brilliant week.

Do unlocks occur via achievements like they used to or is it purely crafting/random drops?

It's not a matter of team OP, but compared between classes, wether or not an engie is OP compared to a scout or demoman, for example.

The gunslinger needs some work, I'm not sure what though (maybe increase movement speed or something?). The mini-sentries are weak and with the ability to move your stuff now, they don't make up for the loss of your tier 2/3 sentry. Valve obviously feels the same way as they tacked on the +25 health/3rd hit crit to beef it up, it still feels unimpressive though. I tried being aggressive with it and going combat engie but that build is still very weak against most classes. Maybe if you dropped your mini-sentry by right-clicking while you had the gunslinger out (so you didn't have to switch weapons mid-combat) it might feel more fluid. Since it's still deployed through the PDA, it just hammers home that it's a gimped sentry.

movable shit...OVERPOWERED....

I'd prefer it to be lvl 1s ONLY...

Or, if you're moving lvl 3s, it's A LOT slower than lvl 1 and should take longer to set itself up and should be extremely vulnerable

Though I will say it was fun sniper slow moving engies around :D

One thing I didn't like is how an engie immediately packed up his shit and moved it only a few feet away to avoid teh spam. There's gotta be a cooldown or something :P I wouldn't mind maybe having you stand there while it packs itself up before you move it. Having it done instantly is... >_>

Or, like I said, only make lvl 1s movable :P Otherwise, I may start playing on more servers with engie cap limits
Not overpowered. Got them turtling in front of spawn? That was there without the moving. It's because of the amount of engineers you have now, and a demoman will still be able to handle them. They try to pick up stuff to avoid teh spam? Detonate your things faster or, even better, take out the engie with his crap.

I find it pretty balanced out, even the buildup. You cannot pick up a sentry that's being built from scratch or from a move, you have to wait until it's done. In that time, the sentry's health can still go down while it's not shooting back. Not to mention Engineers walking slower when carrying + they cannot protect themselves so they can be picked off more easily.

IMO it's pretty balanced

I don't think movable sentries are a problem. Servers with no engineer cap+bots are. Went into a double cross. It was just embarrassing. At least 15+ things in the center. Complete with bots that would auto break the saps.

Seems fine to me, in terms of balance. If anything the engineer will be weaker, albeit a bit more flexible.

Engineer trying to move stuff is incredibly vulnerable now. The Cloak & Dagger just got a bit more useful. You can wait for him to move his gun if you want an easy kill. :P

Then there will be the people who try to play combat engineer and fail horribly, just like all the people who tried to play battle bard in DAoC.

It just looks unbalanced with the amount of engineers we have playing right now. Moving the sentry every now and then is pretty good, especially when people are expecting it to be somewhere and you placed it on their blind spot. I didn't even know until the end of the night you can move all your equipment as well, not just the sentry.

I owned the game since the last holiday sale, but never really played it.

Today I tried it for real and I just don't know whats going on. I am getting killed constantly and don't know what class to play. Any tips for a complete newbie? :D

Edit: Just saw that there are already many tips fpr starters in this thread.

What's the max on the number of revenge crits you can store? Between 2 sentries (1st one got destroyed) I built last night I saved up 25 crits. Nothing like seeing your sentry blow up and then chasing down the culprits with crits :D

These videos can keep you up to speed (At least before the engineer update)

Okay, I'm calling it. The little sentry isn't good enough to me to give up my big sentry. But I love my robot hand :(

Okay I'm not really calling it because the little sentry is so cute. But I'll have to mix and match playstyles a bit.

Frontier Justice + Robot Hand = Little sentry racks up kills and dies fast, so you get your crits fast as well.

Wrangler + Big sentry = Woah.

I see the little sentry as being more of an offensive weapon then a defensive weapon. But even then, it's offensive but indirectly. I'd imagine it's best used as a diversion / just to annoy people. I've seen level one sentries kill plenty of people simply because a) they don't know where the shots are coming from initially and b) it's not considered a big threat and low on people's general "to kill" list. If you could be front line support by dropping dispensers, hanging around to throw down a little sentry at the right time, and then using your crit-shotgun to keep the front line intact I could see the load out being incredibly effective. You're still playing a support class, but the class just has a little bit sharper teeth.

Really I just want to get into a server with a 2-engineer limit with good players and try everything out. To bad TF2 won't be "normal" for another month or so. It's going to take forever to get the engineer slot on a good server.

Just went on multiplay.co.uk servers and there was no engie limit, but only 2 engies (including me) on BLU :O I was amazed and got a few good achievements out of it. Play was awesome except for the fact RED had 8 engies :lol

I mainly tried my stuff with relatively empty servers, 3v3 on koth, placing the little sentry will attract all fire to it, so I guess I had that coming for me. I'll have to test some more things ofcourse, but so far I'm liking the update alot!

Ugh, why did I pick today to do a clean windows 7 install. I won't be able to play until tonight :(

Is it considered blasphemy to plug in a 360 controller while playing?

You should play how you want; just be aware of the likely loss of competitive advantage.

Keep playing and have a few laughs. No one's keeping track of your death count. ;)

I'm thinking right now they will attract a lot of fire because they are new and people don't know what they do. I hope that people eventually start to treat them like a regular lvl1 sentry instead of a new must-kill target. That, and when it's 3v3 there aren't many other targets to focus on :lol .

Even though I despise Area maps, I wonder how well the mini sentries would do. I'd think since they only cost 100 metal you could move them around at will and surprise people pretty easily.

STUPID WORK! I just want to get home and play TF2! And I'm freaking out of town for the weekend too! I'm so jealous of everyone playing. Please keep posting impressions of the new items because I love theorycrafitng this stuff. Question about the mini sentry though: do you drop it like a normal build command (PDA)? I have this image in my head of throwing them out of your glove like Ratchet and Clank.

You build it via the PDA.

PDA, but when first announced, I thought it was right click.

Is there a solution to 'server is not responding' when trying to join any server? Other than keep hitting 'join' till steam hears me sobbing and lets me through? It wouldn't be so bad, except there's no 'auto retry' button when the server doesn't respond.

In order of loot:

Earned milestone 1, unlocked new shotty
15 minutes later find one as a random drop
hit milestone 2 after a night's sleep, unlock glove
5 minutes later find wrangler as random drop

So I am sorted :lol

I also crafted the new wrench this morning, ambassator + scrap metal.

So far I think the new shotgun is perfectly balanced, without crits it's slow to fight with due to the 3 shells at a time limit, crit's are not that easy to earn so they serve as a bonus more then a farmed bonus.

The glove at first felt useless to me, dropping a quick sentry was cool but if I want to rush I will use scout, soldier or another class. After a while I learned a few sweet tricks with the mini sentrys (no not the upgrade glitch) and it can help on some maps if you hide one in the corner.

The wrangler is a fucking beast, set up a level 3 up high and rain death upon anyone that moves, if you switch to your wrench the gun stops for 3 seconds BUT the shield remains so you can so easily repair it and refill it's ammo with a few hits then swap back to the wrangler remote.

Also using the wrangler with the glove is a real awesome mix, just grab and plonk down that mini sentry every now and again in new spots and aim for the enemy, so awesome.

I love this update.

I like being a scout and using the sandman to stun Engineers who are using the wrangler, such easy targets :lol. I assume it's even more fun to snipe them.

But really, just bind moving forward and primary attack to MOUSE1. Victory.

I only got my achievements during normal play and I've got all three weapons now.

So much fun running around killing all the Engineers with one of the other classes. Also gives me good opportunity to work on my "sappin" skills.

every server is filled with people who never play engi just grinding for new weapons.

I'll be glad when it goes back to normal.

The most depressing part is that no one uses the new offensive potential of the glove and moveable stuff. :(

At least the 3 people who actual want to push the damn cart have 6 teleporters to choose from!

John said:

Yeah, they're pretty easy to get, even more so with a team mostly of engineers. A fair amount of achievements require teaming up with other engies, and ones like Death Metal you'll pick up pretty fast since a spy will undoubtedly sap all the teleporter entrances in front of spawn, and everything else for that matter.

First update you've been through? It's always like this. Luckily everyone balances out quickly these days compared to the Medic days.

And that's why you got to have some class restriction servers in your favorites.

Had a fun night. Played a ton of games on one server, but had literally one maybe two engiess on it. I was expecting to see tons, but no such luck.

Next server, I came out of the spawn door to trip over what must have been half a dozen teleporters. Surreal.

I'm not sure what think yet. I think right now it's made the class weaker because they're not turtling as much and they're running around in the open being gunned down fairly easy. On the opposite side, it sucks making a mental note where a sentry is and it's.. just not there a minute later.

I only played engie once last night to try it out. Instead I played other characters so where I could work on their achievements. For example, even with my pathetic spy skills, I was able to get some sapping achievement. :D

Also got some soldier achievement for shooting sentries.

I should have played more spy though. I need to read about the spy mechanics . . . I don't know when the various transitions between normal, cloaked, and disguised occur so I end up dead quickly.

Stage 2, Dustbowl, final point, playing D. While an Uber demo rocked the shit of my teams stupidly clumped together sentries, an engie popped out of the leftside tunnel and built his level 3 sentry on the left side of that platform facing our spawn to cover his teammates while they capped. We couldn't do the desperation rush to final point if we wanted.

Edit: I find the ability to pick up and move buildings to be more meaningful than any of the new weapons from the class update.
