TF2 Engineer update incoming?

Played long enough to get enough engy achievements that I unlocked all the new weapons and crafted the new wrench (scrap metal + ambassador). Lil' sentry + FJ is THE way to play attack engineer. The wrangler + big level 3 is good for defense. I like that the engineer has a decent attack option.

If you're on a server with a bunch on engineers, get everyone to build their stuff in front of spawn and then everyone upgrade. Send one guy ahead to make an exit and everyone teleports their stuff to the front. I should have taken a screenshot of 7 level threes right in front of spawn. :D

There's also a neat glitch, if you build a level 3, then go into spawn and equip the gunslinger pick up your gun and put it back down, it'll be a level 3 mini. It doesn't work all that well, but it sure is funny to look at.

Which weapons are associated with which milestones?

I actually got the Frontier Justice and the Gunslinger, but I'm only at milestone 1 (so I know at least 1 is a random drop).

Can't wait to get the Wrangler. Saw some people using it last night. :D

Frontier Justice is 1, Gunslinger is 2. I haven't gotten to 3- too much idiocy to do that right now. I can wait a bit.

Yup, wrangler is milestone 3.

I really am going to just have fun as a Spy or Demo for the next few days. Engie is my favorite class, but I want to learn and experiment in an actual game environment, not the engineer spam we're currently facing.

That was one advantage to Sniper vs. Spy and Demo vs. Soldier; when they went live people had two classes to try for, so you usually only had four or five on a team, instead of eight engineers :lol

Engineers are pretty shitty right now. Everyone wants to be that dumbass with the metal arm+shotgun and be completely worthless to the team. It's not asking for much, but simply putting down a dispenser is wonderful. Dare one ask for a teleport too?

Ugh, why did I pick today to do a clean windows 7 install. I won't be able to play until tonight :(

Is it considered blasphemy to plug in a 360 controller while playing?
That reminds me, once my Blue Tooth Adapter gets here, I want to try and set it up so I can use the Nunchuck of a Wii Remote to control movement.

but what about all the other buttons you use on your keyboard? You're really gimping yourself if you cut down to basic movement and 2 buttons.

Well, I can/do use my mouse buttons to switch weapons, so with most classes I should be able to just map E and something else to the 2 nunchuck buttons.

Or is there some keyboard controls I am overlooking that I should be able to get to quickly?

Well lets see. The ones I use regularly are

Q E for quick switch, medic; I auto reload, so no R
ZXCV for voice and quick commands (I generally only use voice chant and maybe 1 of them for Thanks.
CTR and SPACE for crouch and jump

And then there are buttons for binds and text chat.

On my mouse I use my scroll wheel up and down for weapons swtich.
Mouse 3 for binds
mouse 4 for weapon switch
mouse 5 for mumble chat.

And on classes with more than 3 weapons I use 4 5 and 6

Most likely will fail, but I still want to give it a try and see if its workable. So I guess I'll set the two buttons on the nunchuck to jump and crouch, and I'll figure out what to do for the rest. Really, what it depends on is if the game benefits at all from analog controls or not

My pyro and sniper destruction scores are going through the roof. THANKS BITE-SIZE MINI-SENTRIES

I was having a BLAST last night using mini sentries as semi-mobiles. Set up a mini sentry, pick off a few guys, move with the payload, drop for attack, pick up, etc.

They deploy pretty quickly when you move them.

EDIT: assisting with the shotgun obviously

How noob friendly is this game guys. Finally got a capable system and looking to catch up on some things. Guessing it's not friendly. :lol

Jump right in! Very noob-friendly, I'd say.

The only drawback to TF2 is that it makes all other games look bad in comparison, both PC and console. Seriously, what other game compares, in terms of the diversity of roles to play, the social/community experience, the free updates that add to the game... none.

Perhaps you can map a few to motion? :lol

Actually if you have wiimote drivers, you can do that. Motion X/Y will just respond like a normal button press.

Got the wrangler. I'm not really good with it... And even then, the laser sometimes glitches to a different sentry. Fix your entities Valve! :lol

Noburo:

Enter idling/achievement server.
Leave computer
???
Hats.

I want some cool loot, and its taking to long! How do I set up "idling"? I know its looked down on, but I need items!

idling is gimped. no point in it now. Your items per week are capped. If you play normally you'll hit that cap easy.

The fastest way to get them is to do the achievements.

Certain drops occur when you reach achievement milestones (which are itself achievements).

For instance, if you get 17 engie achievements, you get an extra achievement, which includes the wrangler (if I recall correctly).

Capped at what though? Ive got so many other games to play, that I cant play TF2 "normally" which im sure is like playing MW2 "normally" which seems to be like for 4 hours everyday for most people, haha.

Achievements will just get me the class items as well correct? I want hats and stuff too!

Blu_LED said:
Can someone explain how achievements affect drops? Is it just as simple as more achievements = more drops?
For the engineer:
5 achievements = unlock weapon
11 achievements = unlock another weapon
17 = unlock last weapon.

X amount of achievements result in a weapon unlock, but only once for each class.

There are "milestone" acheivements which you get by getting X number of acheivements. When you get a milestone an item automatically will drop.

The cap rolls over. So the less frequently you play, the more items will drop when you do play.

But those weapons can also be found randomly?

Yes, there's also random drops.

Plus, some weapons can't be gotten from milestones. For the Engineer, his "Southern Hospitality" wrench can't be gotten via achivement. But items unable to be gotten via acheivement can be gotten via crafting.

The random drops have nothing to do with the achievements or milestones. Well that's not true, the drops came about because of people whinging about having to complete milestones and earn the unlocks.

If you complete a number of achievements you will complete milestone and earn an unlock. What the number of achievements are to hit a milestone varies from class to class. Just look in a specific class' achievements and check out the three milestones, they will mention how many achievements are required for the milestone.

I'm not sure the exact item count, but I think if you play around 7 or 8 hours a week you'll get everything you can.

Thats what I like to hear! So can someone help me set everything up? I've got no clue as to what I'm doing.

Yeah, well I can play 8 hours some weeks, but others none, or very little :(

Yup, actually, the Engineer is the only class where I got all of the items through achievements. I only have like six or seven on most other classes; 90% of my inventory is random drops

Sure! What do you mean by "set everything up?"

Go into filters and look for a server running the map achievement_idle or a map similar to that. Then you just leave the game on while you wait for items.
Or you could just play the game. You'll get items at the same rate regardless. Idling is more for when you're not playing the game and want to get items.

As in do it most efficiently, something I can leave on over night, or while I'm at work.

Hrm only seeing 2, I would think there would be quite a bit more, with so many people doing it.

I just pulled up over 100. Just stick achievement_idle in your map filter. Jump on the server and stick in spectator (this way you don't mess up your stats.

here's the blog post about how the new item system work. give it a read.

Previously, we rolled randomly at intervals to see if you got an item drop. Now we roll to determine when your next item drop will occur. So you're guaranteed to find items at fairly regular intervals. The bulk of drop complaints we've received in the past have been from players having unlucky streaks, where they didn't find any items for weeks. That won't be possible now.

We've significantly increased the rate at which item drops occur, compared to the previous average interval.

There's now a maximum amount of playtime per week in which you get item drops. Playing beyond that amount won't find any more items. The amount varies, but if you play an hour or so a day you're good. Some of your unused time will rollover to the following week, so if you're an intermittent player you'll also be fine.

The best way to get the items is to play through the achievements (if you really just want the items, and don't care so much about the game or the challenge of them you can use a milestone unlocker or achievement farm server). That will net you the 3 core new weapons for every class.

Hats can only be crafted or found randomly, though.

As someone that used to idle all the time I really don't see a need for it now. I usually clock in more than my 7 hours a week through normal play.

As it is now, you could idle for 1 night a week and be good no matter what, but it's fun to get item drops as you actually play.

Thanks, I was being stupid, and putting it in the tags box, not the maps box. haha.

After more playing I like the gunslinger a lot, it's very useful when you can just run to a corner a dump a sentry hoping it gets a few rounds off before being blown up, or stick it in a good spot and do some long range wrangler shooting.

The ability to manually aim sentries has completely changed the game for me now, I hardly ever used the normal pistol anyway and damn on some maps you can beast an entire area if you have a partner engie heal and reload your sentry, total beast.

Got quite a few items today, and am halfway to a new hat thanks to duplicates.

Ah, nothing more satisfying than deflecting a "clever" Wrangling engie's rockets back at him.

Anyone having TF2 problems? Ever since this update i cant join any of my usual servers. I just get "No server response" or whatever. Wish i could find out whats wrong :(

Did a defrag and verify itegrity check in steam, No luck.

No kidding. Same thing last night on Badwater. I'm on Red. Team with like 8 engies and I'm a demo. No teleporters, no dispensers.

Blue team captures the first point and I die defending it.

I type in chat, "If we're not built on the roof you guys got problems."

Sure enough, roof is a barren wasteland.

Leave server.

I thought the other patches were bad, but I think this one takes the cake. Everyone's just sitting around waiting for the otherside to move. It's boring.

I didn't see very many problems with people building teleporters. Usually as long as someone builds a forward one, Engies will first carry their sentries through, then at death their teles. I guess if they're turtling hard they don't die fast enough for you, and the exits get clumped up and are Spy or Demo candy, but usually I see enough Engineers try with the teles.

Go play Spy, disguise as Engineer, Dead Ringer if you've got it. Your life just got more exciting and probably more satisfying.

But I actually want to play Engineer and mess with the new toys, not sit around and complain about how the game's not normal right now and how clever I am for picking an anti-Engineer class. This is the time to screw around with the new weapons and get good at them, because later on if you're just then trying to figure out the Gunslinger's best uses, or when it's safe to lug your Sentry, people are going to bitch about it. Even on the best servers I run into that.

Well, at least we all knew it was gonna be the worst of them, so we had time to mentally prepare. Hopefully in a week everything'll be great again.

Yeah, also my favorites and history have been wiped. If I leave the server browser open for like 10 minutes then I can join a game or two before it chokes up again. Never had this problem before and neither have I updated anything besides TF2.

Just find servers with a class limit on them...not hard to find :P

One I frequent, FreeFragNetwork, is filled with really shitty players for you to feast on as a spy or sniper, limits engies to 3 only, AND is instaspawn.

Yeah, one of the servers I play on has instaspawn, engineer limit for non-premium members (which is most players), and has plenty of fresh meat to snipe and backstab.

so i finally go to play a normal game and Man, I hate the new engie weapons. it's so different to play but then again it opens up a new way to play or not :lol. I'll give it some more time I guess.

It's hard to say right now but I feel like the Wrangler could potentially break maps, with a 2 engineer setup one can refill ammo while the other mans the gun, providing an unlimited steam of spy finding, sticky breaking, shielded, uber bouncing, unending fire. In the right places, hallways and chokepoints, it's extremely tough to counter.

It's pretty easy to craft the new wrench.

Southern Hospitality = Ambassador + Scrap Metal

Not a very good item, but it's there if you want it for the sake of completeness.

Embrace the insanity of the class update, TF2 will return to business as usual soon enough, servers will die down, the class balance will return but for now, enjoy the insanity, play as a counter-class. Live it up as a spy or demo.
