[TGS] Final Fantasy XV Active Time Report live stream

I wish he would. I don't think these characters fit this world.
Eh, they fit a modern world just fine. It'd be totally believable to see four young men like those four walking in a Tokyo like city like Lucis. I mean, sure, they are a bit more stylized than your average person, but that's part of FF's genes.

Well, maybe the ones that didn't look like fanart.

Nah, seriously, having recently gone on a jigsaw spree (on my 3rd 5000 piece now) the overall composition makes for interesting large-piececount jigsaws.

Not exactly FFXV but this one in particular too.

The Creationism one is right up there with it.

A Japanese game website called "Dengeki Online" has put of the Q&A in text.
I'll quote the original source, so someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

『FF15』製品版ではリミットブレイク的なシステムを搭載。コスチュームも変更できる【TGS2015】

The part which is creating confusion is the "自分で設定できる4つの武器のプリセットをリアルタイムに切り替えられる" part.

I tried translating which is the following.
Regarding real time weapon changing, it affects the core part of the game and character, thus you can't change every weapon.
In the retail version, you can switch between presets made out of 4 weapons which you can set by yourself. If you want to equip a weapon which is not in your preset, you'd have to open the menu.

I'm not sure about the "you can switch between presets made out of 4 weapons".
Because some Japanese summarisation blogs (まとめブログ) are interpreting it as setting 4 individual weapons to switch through.
Instead of, switching through multiple presets made out of 4 weapons.

Anyways, I quoted the original source since its what Tabata said.
Sorry I couldn't clear up the confusion.

I translated some of the questions that weren't still here or weren't very clear yet.

Can the convertible car be left open in the rain?

It'll close automatically.

Will there be FF12-like mob hunts? And will Gilgamesh make an appearance?

There'll be mob hunts but, Gilgamesh won't appear. (Looking at the answer) If DLC is fine with you, we'll consider it.

Can you call in chobocos? When the player gets off them, will they leave?

There's a method where you can rent them with gil for a certain period of time. During those periods, you can call them with a flute, and they'll camp with you. When you get off them, they'll follow you for a while and then leave.

Are Double jump, real-time weapon change without opening the menu, mid-air combos not as a thing of phantom mode but in general in?

About the real-time weapon change, it depends on the basic settings of the characters and the game, so you won't be able to change all the weapons. In the final game, you'll be be able to equip 4 presets with the weapons you like, and switch them in realtime. If you want to use weapons outside the presets, you'll need to open the menu.

In FF15, will there be costume change and/or will it be limited to DLC?

Costume change is in, I think that in the final game there'll be at least one type of costume. Clothes that we wanted to put but couldn't will be considered for DLC distribution.

Outside black chocobos, will there be chocobos of other colors?

We have no plans for different colors outside the black chocobo. Nevertheless, that doesn't mean that there'll only be black chocobos so look forward to that.

I'd like to see party members' pasts, like when they were in high school and stuff. I think it'd be very interesting if there were playable sidestories.

I want to do them, so I think I'll do them (laughs). Not only in the game, I want to touch upon main character episodes in various forms. Theyll be limited if we're talking only about the game, so I think it'd be better to use other media to show them properly.

I translated some of the questions that weren't still here or weren't very clear yet.

Mob hunts huh, I really enjoyed those in FFXII, probably my favorite part.

Man, I'm hoping for Chocobo breeding and racing. I want another Gold Chocobo gosh darnit, one that I can find secret islands and secret uber summons with. I bet racing would be pretty fun based on how that chocobo slid around.

Chocobo riding looks fun, one thing I hate about horse and jeeps on MGSV is how they get stuck in every little rock in the way, makes navigating the world a "pain" (did you see what I did there? hur hur)

Nah, seriously, having recently gone on a jigsaw spree (on my 3rd 5000 piece now) the overall composition makes for interesting large-piececount jigsaws.

Man, imagine how good the LR world could have look with a competent team and engine...

It's so disappointing to read Tabata interviews. It's a good thing that he's so passionate about things and want to add a lot, but I guess I just keep expecting this game to be advanced enough for them to have what's in and out set in stone, with no time for changes, but when he answers "I'd like to do it so I think I'll do it (laughs)", I can't help but think "what are you doing?", even if there's no question that Tabata knows infinitely more about game development than I ever will.

Team was plenty competent. I think all else being equal, making Crystal Tools do what it's not meant to do just to put LR together, in the time and resources allocated to the project, is nothing short of a technical marvel, regardless of how the end result was under objective scrutiny.

The impression I'm getting is that a lot of what fans ask have been discussed internally to one extent or another at some point (come on, you have a large team of presumable Final Fantasy fans and all the time in the world prior) but Tabata doesn't want to promise anything that might get cut to make release date. Especially not in context of FFXV where there's apparently a huge gaping PR wound over the whole Stella thing. Hence PR answers.

Glad to hear rare monster hunting is in. I really hope it's handled more like FFXII rather than how it was handled in Episode Duscae with all the quest markers and objectives.

Yeah, makes sense. No matter how much content the final game has, when people find out the amount of stuff that was promised and didn't make it, it'll inevitably feel like an incomplete game, but if he just says he'll think about it instead of "we're working on it already", he can just say "yeah it didn't work out".

My impression is they just don't want to outright say "no" in fear of upsetting people. So they leave the "maybe" part in and if they do it, they do it but if not they can eventually say it wasn't working so it didn't make it in.

Experience of playing FFXV in 2018:

1. Install game.
2. Choose "New Game"
3. A CGI movie opening.
4. A slide show of concept arts that lasts 1 hour.
5. A CGI movie ending.
6. "Game Over".

We did. Plus his bandaged forearm.

edit:
I know what's wrong with the fish dish!

No fluid physics for the sauce.

(Probably for the best, that thing already makes me hungry enough as it is)

As in the demo, you have a "deck" of weapons. What he says probably means that you can't individually change a weapon in that deck with the real-time weapon change, but when you press whatever button is the weapon change button, it will change the whole deck to a different one.

So you can't do it like this

Deck of weapons:
Sword - 2H Sword - Spear - Katana

*press weapon change*

Sword - Daggers - Spear- Katana

(Unless you make two almost identical weapon decks)

It works more like this

Deck #1
Sword - 2H Sword - Spear - Katana

*press weapon change button*

Deck #2
2H Sword - Halberd - Daggers - Sword

If you can change mid-Combo that basically is the same as changing individual weapons (though you can only chose from 4 weapons). So, I guess the feature is back as we knew it.

Luminous is a bitch. FF7 Remake and KH3 aren't using it because of the development hell it's created for 15.

Then I really wish they would. They need to just show their vision of the game already. Can't wait for the march trailer, hopefully it'll put the game that we have in a better light. So far, most of the information we have that helps shape the game in our minds is about stuff that's getting cut from Nomura's game, instead of what makes XV unique compared to Versus.

Instead of saying "Stella didn't work so she's out", "Regis' look didn't work so it was changed", they should just fucking tell us what's unique about their role in XV that demanded such drastic changes.

Though I suppose the ATR format helps this kind of information and couldn't possibly show their vision as well as a complete story trailer would.

Nobody's gonna talk about the wheel chair behind Noctis?

Probably the accident that put him close to death and gave him the eyes that can see the light of expiring souls, right?

The dogs must have something to do with their survival as well, since they both have them and it was confirmed that the dog is an important character (or am I remembering things wrong?).

Yeah... Which is a shame because FFXV looks incredible, honestly more impressive to me than what we've seen of Dragon Quest or Kingdom Hearts, but it's just not worth it. Luminous was a mistake, and Panta Rhei seems to be at least just as bad. I wonder if the time it's takin for Capcom to reveal a new RE and DMC has to do with their engine being hot garbage.

I think they said the dog had an important role in the story, which is a little different than being an important character, but that's a minor quibble.

Oh I agree and that's actually one of my biggest problems with the messaging that's gone on with the game this year. It's clear Tabata is pouring his life into creating this game but it's his vision and desire to try and please everyone at once that's currently lacking.

Yeah, luminous is absolutely gorgeous but I'd rather have a slightly less beautiful game on UE4 in 3-4 years than wait FF15 time.

The reason we may or may not have airships is entirely a technical problem with the Luminous engine too. Apparently the engine has issues scaling vertically which would make airships impossible. I know that Tabata and his team are reaching out to studios outside SE for tech and information sharing. But the lack of commitment from Tabata on some content features is definitely because this engine is so fucking unwieldy and he just really has to push this game out the door.

I agree, I'm guessing this is the last game they will develop on Luminous. KHIII's switch to UE4 is probably indicative of where the company wants to go.

It would have been better if he never would have brought up airships at all.

Very few games have the seamless vertical scale that Just Cause franchise has. It's a LOD nightmare.

But it's ok, I submit to your expert knowledge of game engines. :)

That's what I'm thinking. I'm guessing that Regis crying in the Dawn trailer is him lamenting the fact that Noctis can see death and he'll suffer because of it. I wonder if Luna has the same power as Noctis has and Stella did. I'm guessing yes, because that'd be a reasonable reason why she's the oracle that can communicate with the gods and is revered by people.

The black/gray dog in the concept art is the same one that appeared in the streets in the Dawn trailer.

Noctis is too young at that time and as seen in the concept art, that event won't happen until a little later in the story.

It kind of is and it kind of isn't. Functionally, it CAN be the same, but again, if you are in a situation where you want to have 2H weapon as your enemy finisher attack instead of a katana, but keep the rest of the weapons in the deck the same yet you don't have a deck set up where you have a 2H sword as an enemy finisher, that's when you'll have to go into the menu and switch it manually.

I'm also thinking that having this ability to see death make you this game's equivalent of an l'Cie, so Regis could also be lamenting the fact that Noctis now is a subject to the gods' will, would also tie well with the ones we see in the end of Dawn 1.0

They didn't switch over to the full Luminous until 2014 when it was more complete. So you really only have to wait 2 years. :P

The manual switching from around E3 '13 surely had a limit on how many weapons you could switch between, too, so you'd have had the same issue when you don't have every weapon type at least once in your list, no?

here's another story bit that I thought was interesting and put a lot of context into the scenes with luna and that guy we don't know the identity of.

Yeah, makes sense w/ the whole brushing-the-rifles aside thing, too. Her city is occupied, but the soldiers are no doubt on a short-leash w/ her due to her powers/political importance.

2013 was a bit different in that weapons didn't have preset "roles" that you had to assign for them in the menu, yes? So you could use a sword for everything if you didn't switch it to a different weapon. It could be the "basic combo" weapon, the "jump attack" weapon, the "enemy finisher" etc.all at once without having to switch to different decks. On the other hand, in its current form, you can technically have a 2H sword in your decks, but it's limited to the "roles" that you assign to it beforehand. Of course the 2013 probably had a limitation on how many weapons you could have ready for switching, but that wasn't quite as limiting as the current system. I'm just talking about how the system works in a way that you switch the whole deck instead of just switching a single role into something different. In action, it can work pretty similarly as the old system, but it's a bit more limited.

I mean, that's what I get from that quote, but I could be wrong.

The FFXV you see in this gameplay footage has been in development for 3(+) years so far. While they've kept the world, the premise of Niflheim invading other countries & coming for Lucis in the beginning of the game, the road trip focus, friendship theme, modern day aesthetics etc. the same, most of the work done to make FFVsXIII a reality was scrapped in 2012. This is a technologically expanded version, even if some story stuff has been cut/changed. They can make larger environments, more impressive set piece moments, more complex enemy behaviour etc. And that meant that a lot if not most or even all of the PS3 level work was scrapped in 2012.

Kagari's site has a good recap and translation of the QA.

Some stuff

  • Hajime Tabata said that if they’re able to add things into Final Fantasy XV, they will—even if it means having to do so through DLC.
  • Should they add content to the game via DLC, it will always be for free. For example, if they are to add airships through DLC, it will be a free download.
  • There will be a variety of familiar magic for Final Fantasy XV, and one brand new “main” magic.
  • Guns won’t have combos similar to regular weapons, but they will have rapid fire shots, and will require reloads. Think of them as traditional gameplay with guns in other games.
  • You’ll get something for defeating Archaeans (Summoned Beasts,) as in something to prove that you beat them, and will sometimes get to “borrow” their power after doing so.
  • There are plans to have other languages (voicing) to be available via DLC.
  • The Black Chocobo isn’t just a regular Chocobo.
  • You won’t be able to go inside all of the buildings, but there are plenty you will get to enter.
