[TGS] Final Fantasy XV Active Time Report live stream

Kagari's site has a good recap and translation of the QA.

Some stuff

  • Hajime Tabata said that if they’re able to add things into Final Fantasy XV, they will—even if it means having to do so through DLC.
  • Should they add content to the game via DLC, it will always be for free. For example, if they are to add airships through DLC, it will be a free download.
  • There will be a variety of familiar magic for Final Fantasy XV, and one brand new “main” magic.
  • Guns won’t have combos similar to regular weapons, but they will have rapid fire shots, and will require reloads. Think of them as traditional gameplay with guns in other games.
  • You’ll get something for defeating Archaeans (Summoned Beasts,) as in something to prove that you beat them, and will sometimes get to “borrow” their power after doing so.
  • There are plans to have other languages (voicing) to be available via DLC.
  • The Black Chocobo isn’t just a regular Chocobo.
  • You won’t be able to go inside all of the buildings, but there are plenty you will get to enter.

Not convinced that ALL of the DLC will be free but its good they won't charge for all of it. Nice.

It kind of annoys me how Luna is just another typical Aerith/Yuna oracle now, instead of the sword fighter that Stella was. I don't even need to post the GIF.

It would have been better if he never would have brought up airships at all.
They needed to adress the question. Partly because Nomura already made the decision & mistake of mentioning they were testing airships for Versus XIII and partly because controllable airships are something people would really like to see return into mainline FF and what's a better game to have flyable modes of transport than the first seamless open-world-ish FF ever? It was one of the most asked questions about FFXV, so they couldnt just stay silent about it. Maybe saying that it might come as DLC/update afterwards wasn't the best way to adress the question, but they needed to give an answer and "no comment" or "we'll talk about it later" would have been far worse

No they didn't, not when they keep saying this game isn't Versus XIII. There hasn't been true PS1-style airships in the series for a while so the sudden fixation here is hilarious given most fans probably didn't even read the Nomura interviews you mentioned.

Airships as fast travel has been a thing for a while, then you had FFX's point and click version which was fine too. Only now in FF14 can you fly a personal airship but that's still restricted to certain zones.

Don't like dlc also if free... i'd prefer to see 'important' things like airship in the release. Also because they should add the airship within the story/cutscenes and not only as an extra thing. :/

From a narrative standpoint, it's completely possible to have a menu-driven fast-travel airship at launch and the flyable higher-than-Ramuh's-head version with manual control to get to exclusively airship areas later on.

Not saying that's what's going on, but 'flyable airship as DLC' doesn't preclude their importance to the story, if they're part of the story.

I hope this is the case. I was pretty eh on it as well, but you raise good points.

A game released between 2008 and 2009.
oh u
Even the less serious stuff was something that they've been meaning to do from the start. Nomura talked about how he doesn't want the whole game be quite as doom & gloom as what they had shown from Versus XIII and how he'd want to have the kind of goofy humor that old FFs had, with Noctis & his friends goofing around at times. They simply didn't show that aspect much (other than Gladio rough-housing Prompto).

There are some bigger changes to the character & storylines, but those mostly seem to stem from the fact that Nomura's vision for the game expanded into something that would/could include sequels whereas the FFXV we have now needs to be more of a self-contained thing, so they've streamlined some aspects of the story & cut others. And of course some changes are just the kind that happen as something turns from a concept trailer like VsXIII's E3 2006 trailer into the finished thing (especially with projects that take this long).
That's all reasonable, but it still bums me out.

I don't believe this for a second.

Oooh really? In video format or pictures? Gotta go watch it if its a video cause i didnt watch it then

You're right, there hasn't been an airship in a long time, but that doesn't mean a lot people don't want it back. Lack of a world map/overworld that you could travel through with an airship in the past few FFs (not just through quick travel or menu) is one of the things a lot of people complain the most about or at least hope it would make a return at some point in the future. And despite some bigger changes, a lot of stuff they talked about for Versus was still carried over from Versus in one form or the other. Car being an important mode of transport, Noctis summoning weapons, Noctis' ability to use all weapon types, the sword teleport, importance/role/style of summons etc., so why not airships?

And you might've lived under a rock, because there was a lot of complaining over FFX being so different from the past FFs, one of the biggest complaints being it was without a miniature world map you could more freely traverse with airships etc. Even with FFXII's world being far less linear, a lot of people still yearned for the return of airships. And, again, airships has been one of the most frequent questions about FFXV and people were getting antsy about getting an answer to the question. I think it's better to know there's at least a chance that a flyable airship will be in the game than still being completely in the dark and not knowing whether one is even planned anymore or not.

to be honest? he should.

I mean look at Cor he is fucking badass

20150919_010121.png

Cor can easily be the best FF protagonist in my book.

I love this artwork, not only because it draws a comparison between Regis's generation and Noctis's via "group of loyal friends", it's also similar to the comparison between the 4 Braves of Light/Light Warriors(Dorgann, Galuf, Kelger, Xezat) of FFV and the next generation of Light Warriors(Bartz, Reina, Faris, Krile). Given Cor is supposed to join Noctis, it reminds me of Galuf joining Bartz and crew(basically, a member of the "old guard" joins the "new guard" as a sort of mentor figure).

Still, love that they made Cid(who is dressed similar to Cindy) a fighter and friend of Regis. All of Regis's companions seem to fall along the similar lines of Noctis, with Cid taking Prompto's place, Gladiolus's dad takes Gladiolus's place, Cor takes Ignis's place, and Regins takes Noctis's place.

This sudden fixation for airships is weird but whether is day one or dlc I hope the people who want this get their wish. I just want a good/decent story I don't really care for the tropes but yet again I'm in the minority.

Yeah, we could still have scenes like the one in the E3 2013 story trailer where Noctis is flying over Altissia on an enemy airship in real time or the kind where Noctis is on that flying platform in Lucis in the 2011 trailer (I mean, we did saw him teleporting into one of those enemy dropships in the last progress report video). I'm guessing airships aren't too much of a problem if they stay within a certain sized area that is already streamed into the game (like a city or a swampy forest), but if you fly longer distances where the type of terrain & environment changes a lot (like, say, from the wilds into Altissia), then there are probably still problems. The streaming might not currently be able to keep up with the move from, for example, some swamp to a hugely detailed city.

lol Nomura also had a world map just like the ones present in 7, 8, and 9 but decided to scrap it because he felt like it wasn't cohesive with the rest of the game. There was so much iteration going on with Versus 13 that holding the 15 development team to anything that Nomura said or wanted 5 or 6 years ago is crazy.

Fully agreed, although I think it's funny that Glad Dad, despite being a bruiser like his son, is doing some Tai Chi shit.

Sounds like this was successful overall, as far as ATRs go. I still feel the trickle of information is unnecessary. I'd have preferred to get the Dawn stuff, the minigame stuff, etc. in a trailer that put it all in a larger context. Their ratio of talking versus showing is a little too slanted toward the former, as well. It's nice to hear about how things like magic are supposed to work, and details about the characters, but it doesn't translate into anything exciting unless shown through the actual game world. I don't like that so much of what we "know" only exists in the context of ATRs.

But I guess this complaint has been made a million times already. Maybe ATRs will look better when they have more to show, and all the ATR stuff becomes more supplemental.

Hopefully the big break means they'll come back with something more meaty.

There was so much iteration going on with Versus 13 that holding the 15 development team to anything that Nomura said or wanted 5 or 6 years ago is crazy.

Here's the thing, everyone fell in love with the concept/imagination Nomura came up with for VersusXIII. However, the execution of it was flawed since he was changing stuff on the fly and nothing was ever set in stone despite whatever intentions Nomura had.

Fans ( like me ) held on to vague comments from sporadic interviews throughout the years and formed this imaginary game in our heads sort of a fanfic. I let go of this notion long ago and you still see people judging this game on VersusXIII metric.. But people will say "Tabata said nothing was changed from Versus! Bla bla" poor PR talk, lied or afraid of reactions whatever you wanna call it however i do believe he tried to salvage concepts on what little was there to form a cohesive single story since the sequels idea for the moment have been scrapped. Tabata is basically like the XOF crew in TPP that came in to clean the mess, it pains me to say it but that's the truth. I still would've preffered Nomura's vision all day but at least the game is coming.

Finally people screaming at the dawn trailers is funny cause when they start showing spoiler trailers they will still complain they showed to much,

People can beg for it all they want but if the game isn't designed for it, it's not designed for it. XV wasn't and Tabata's answers on the subject make that very clear.
Still doesn't mean Tabata revealing they are working on it is wrong. Their messaging could've been better/clearer, like with a lot of things related to ATRs/FFXV's info sharing/marketing, but all-in-all us knowing they are working on airships, even if it's not certain the feature will be in, is not a bad thing. It's not like the absence of a flyable airship will make or break the game, but it will be a nice feature to have if they manage to pull them off and I think it's nice to finally know that they haven't completely abandoned the feature that hasn't been heard of in, like, 6-7 years.

We knew that the old school world map was scrapped a long time ago, though. Again, a lot of the concepts from Versus did make it into FFXV (even if how some of them control/function was changed), so it's not too far-fetched to think that airships could have made the cut as well, especially since we've seen Noctis on an airship post-Versus XIII. It's just one of those things that was mentioned briefly and then never heard of again, yet never officially scrapped either. Some stuff has been like that yet they have actually resurfaced later on. Like Noctis using guns. Nomura said it would be possible in Versus XIII. We never saw it. Never heard of it again. Game changed to FFXV and still didn't see it. But lo and behold, we got a surprise-confirmation that Noctis is still able to use guns in FFXV just recently.

I gotta say, that new Regis looks much better than old Regis. Now he at least has an older fatherly figure to him.

Who is Cid in this game? I thought we were only getting Cidney.

Nomura's glorious vision.

The Roen deal.

I hope all costumes aren't Roen designed. I've said things like this, I wouldn't be against having other artists at Square(or freelancers) design costumes for these characters. Like, get Nomura to design a set for all the heroes, maybe not like the original pre-Roen Versus costumes(other than Noctis, Gladiolus, Prompto and Ignis were dressed too casual and very similar to their final Roen look). Just let Nomura go crazy(even with belts and zippers, if he chooses to do so... he's earned it). Also, being a big fan, I'd love an Amano costume set(ask Amano to design his own original outfits for the four heroes and maybe Cor too). Might look out of place, but no one says "additional" costumes in JRPGs need to look logical.

And you might've lived under a rock, because there was a lot of complaining over FFX being so different from the past FFs, one of the biggest complaints being it was without a miniature world map you could more freely traverse with airships etc..

This!!!

I remember that perfectly, i got seriously pissed off the game when i discovered that.

God I hate this shit in RPGs....looking at you Tales. Look at Souls/Dragons Dogma. Why can't they just give us plenty of costumes to attain in game :/

I'm the exception, not the rule, but it nukes my interest in costumes wholesale when it's DLC. I'm just not at all tempted. I like in-game rewards. I like there to be a mechanic, a line of dialogue, something. When this kind of stuff is DLC, it's just, "pop, now you look different," and that's so trite, so small. Certainly not a thing I'd spend $5 on.

Are you referring to the Accordo sequence with Leviathan? That's a scripted set-piece. If we can only get airships and airship battles etc through similar set pieces I'd be ok with that.

Airships are cool and all but I don't think this is the game to bring them back in a traditional sense. Perhaps FF7's remake though ?

I just get the feeling that this game has been designed 100% around the speedier travel option being roads and cars - hop in the car, drive and take a look outside , see anything that looks enticing ? then pull over and hop out and run around exploring for a bit.

Given the scale of the graphics , I wouldn't be surprised at all if the actual game isn't quite as huge as maps and demos make it seem either.

I fact , I think it will take a page from FFXIII in one way - there will be "chapters". FFXIII ended up having 13 chapters typically filled with 30 mintues of story, 1 hour of exploring/monster fighting ending with a boss and and a 10 minute cutscene right up until the last couple chapters.

With FFXV , I think we will end up having 15 chapters - each one will be a main location or goal probably culminating in a boss battle. Some of these might be long sections with a bunch of side quests , others might by on rails narrative sections such as the leviathan sequence showcased in the 2013 trailer. This entry looks to have some similarities to ffx's narrative as well - traversing the world from point A to B collecting summon monsters , I imagine a couple of them will be optional but I suspect a good chunk are intended to be full chapters - even the episode duscae demo seems like half of a chapter - you leave Nifelhiem to go deal with Titan , Prompto does something that breaks down the car so you've gotta spend a day exploring the countryside nearby to collect money and then the next day (in theory) you drive down the highway some more to go have a chat with Titan and fight him as a big boss. Then, perhaps after that you go back to nifelheim for the failed peace treaty sequence where the city is under attack and it ends with Noctis escaping with his friends leading into chapter 3 - where you probably have to travel somewhere for a reason !

Using airships as anything outside of a fast travel option in a game with this potential design would be little more than a cosmetic thing really.
