That feeling you get from NOT working.

Not sure where I’m going here ... maybe just thinking out loud, and wondering how others feel... but yesterday (out of the blue) I took the day off because I felt I badly needed a rest. I live very close to work and yesterday just kind of sat around my house not doing anything at all - it didn’t feel like a Saturday or a Sunday or a holiday, because for some inexplicable reason I felt like I was ‘cheating’, that I was ‘supposed’ to be at work.

Weirdly, this prevented me from doing the things I’d normally do on a day off. It felt like a wasted day.

At 5pm I went down to see my girlfriend (who’s also a work colleague) and she and some others were getting into their cars, and I told her that I felt ‘out of it’, and that I regretted having not gone into work. She said, no, it was good that I took the day off because ‘I needed it’. But, actually, seeing everyone else coming off work like that just made me feel guilty.

What’s your experience here? I’m the type of person who views work as work - most times I’d rather not being doing it (though I certainly don’t dislike it, and, at times, it’s very rewarding). And yet when I’m away from work for too long, or at the wrong time, I feel terrible about NOT working. It’s weird.

I mentioned this to a colleague once and he just shook his head and said that it was ‘idiotic’ - but I‘m guessing there are others who sort of feel this way??

Don’t ever feel bad for taking a personal day. It’s completely normal to wake up some days and just say Fk it and take a mental health day. I do get where your coming from as far as feeling like you’re cheating because days I would take off of work when I wasn’t sick at my last job (my current job encourages us to take mental health days), I would feel weird for being home when my body is used to being at work. Your employer isn’t going to think less of you for taking a personal day even if you’re not sick, and if they do, I would find employment elsewhere.

I started working at 11...instead of going to swim at the beach during summer i was working, instead of playing with friend after school i was working.

I don't feel an inch of guilt when i have day off because of this, i already fucking earned every day off i'm gonna have.

I feel we just had two threads like this yesterday. lol But anyways if I could afford to skip a day of work I would. Sometimes humans need a break from it all and need to recharge.

I NEED to work. As a teacher having the summer off just proves it to me. Just waking up whenever and having 3 months off with no schedule fucks me up every time.
By the mid to late summer I’m just super unmotivated and just want to sleep.

Since I have been working these past 3 weeks my mood is greatly improved. I am sleeping better but not as long. I feel motivated and happier. I feel a sense of purpose again.

Maybe it’s partly due to the work I do being very rewarding 🧐 I wish everyone could have a job that impacts other people’s lives in a meaningful way.

Sure, your parents are going to kick you out if you can't make rent that month.

Meanwhile you've preordered a PS5, Xbox series X and the new PC graphics card.

Fuck off Taylor playing the "Slumming it" card.
I wouldn’t be so quick to judge. Some people really use video games as a therapy. It’s a way to unwind and release stress. It gives people a sense of accomplishment and entertainment value. Honestly if spending $500 on something that makes your live or mood better is a positive in my book.

Yeah finances are important but if you have a sense of foresight and can plan accordingly I don’t see an issue.

People are at different places in life.

My job requires me to be at work since i'm one of the only accosciates that can drive around the city so i can't afford to call off work whenever i want to. Also, Amazon doesn't charge until they ship so i may not even keep the PS5 or XSX. I can save up for nice things every once in a while, But go ahead and judge me i don't care.

I've been working from home since March (because the flu is going around you see), so taking random days off are just a waste of time IMO unless I want to go do something... except everything is closed.

Before this nonsense though I really did enjoy taking off a random day, but it would usually be a Monday or Friday. I took the first of 3 days as a "get caught up" type of thing (pay bills, do laundry, clean, run errands, etc.) and then I would have a normal weekend after.

I've had a slow week too (lots of GAF time lol)

Sometimes I do feel a bit guilty but then I think about all those times that I've worked late or allowed myself to get stressed with work, missed going to the gym because of work or worked over my weekend. I figure it all balances out.

I'm also going to be starting a new job soon so it's really hard to motivate myself in my current job when I know it'll all be a distant memory in a few weeks.

I've had plenty of times where I'd wake up in the morning and couldn't think of anything worse than going into work yet again. Often though, I drag my ass in and feel better for it within 10 minutes of being there.

I know it isn't possible for a lot of people, but if you can compress a 40 hour work week into 3 or 4 longer days instead of having it spread across 5 or 6 days, it makes a big difference in my opinion.

1 or 2 days off is not enough to be able to disconnect your brain from work. Your "work" part of the brain is still very much active when you take a single day off and this why you feel this way. This is why we need 3 day weekend IMO
Yeah man, sometimes weekends fly by too fast... 4 workdays and 3 day weekend would be ideal scenario, but it sounds too good to be true so...

Learn to not feel that kind of guilt. Everybody deserves time off, even if it's from your girlfriend. Maybe you could improve on doing things you like next time, plan for three things and then just do one. Call it a 'fuck it'-day.

Society as it is right now is conditioned from a very early age that work and being 'productive' is an essential part of one's life and personality. I don't know whether this is a good thing or not; that is for others to judge. But that's part why many people feel a certain guilt over not working.

I know those kind of days. When you call out just because you don't feel like getting up but it is in the middle of the week. Then you sleep in late and really get started around noon but then you realize that everyone else is at work and you can't really do anything anyway so it is just vegging out all day.

I found saving those days for Fridays can make a difference. In fact, unless I am going on vacation I only really take off Friday or Monday. Taking a day off during the week just always feels like a waste to me.

Sounds more like OP needs to cultivate more hobbies and not let work be such a central part of one's life. It's important, but one day you'll be old and retired, then what do you do with your time? We see the danger of that now with retired boomers who made work their whole life, then don't know what to do with their time, so just loaf around the house, take up drinking, or some other vice. Any free time that opens up should be a joyous time to engage in other activities one does besides work. The more I look around, the more I notice that a lot of people absolutely suck at finding hobbies, and are quite listless without the regiment of work telling them what to do. It's actually quite worrisome for society.

it felt weird to OP because work is the natural state of things. food, clothing and shelter are not raining down from the heavens. we are meant to toil. that is part of worldly existence. everything about reality follows this rule.

the idea that people can get along without work is a myth detached from reality. all it does is subsidize that work to those less well off. ironically, wanna be socialists end up as the biggest contributors to capitalism.

I had over 40 hours of PTO and spread them out for like a month. Now I'm at 2 hours something and I had no guilt using it at all. Been building it for a couple of weeks so I may use some next week. Gotta get paid !!! Only feel bad if I miss work when I could've and didn't get paid.

There is nothing natural about sitting in a office for more than 8 hours for 5 sometimes even 6 days a week.

I will never understand Americans and their obsession with work.

I cant relate to this at all.

When i dont work people call me left and right plus email me on saturday sunday.

When i take a day off or 2 even though i work seven days a week they call and email even more.

I dont feel bad . I feel stressed the fuck out cuz i cant enjoy my day off constantly expecting someone to ruin it for me.

And you will not get thanked for it if you don't use the occasional day/week off
Nope. There's a rotation at work where someone takes 3 month off, then the other blokes cover him for ludicrous overtime. 3 months later the next fella will go off and it starts again.

There are a handful of people who will take 2 weeks off every 12 months, as they see it as a perk of the job, rather than a safety net.

Hell, i could go see a Dr, lie through my arse about being stressed/depressed (both easily faked) get a 6 month sick-note and nobody would think anything of it.

here you nod at the doc, he says 'ayyy lmao' and gives you a slip

that rotation sounds like government job, know a lot of people with police or civil service that have incredible stuff going on. police is a metric fuckton of overtime anyways

It's not government, it's a yanky company with only one factory in the UK. A factory run by a militant union that run circles around the management, as they don't even know their own policies. It's like going back in time to the 80's.

Someone here said they dont get the yanks. How can they work like that no vacation sick leave etc.
I get it from living in europe half my life .
But the difference is , and again it depends on the field you work in, you can make a big carrier here.
You can start your own thing any time no restrictions no age limit you can become what ever you want.
Its all up to you.
In europe its a lot harder to change carriers after a certain age or you try to start your own business but the laws and regulations will make it very difficult for you.

The saying land of opportunities applies here for sure. But its all up to you.

So you see you can be comfy with your pay check and stay with the company and have lots of free time but you will never evolve.

I work my ass off but cuz i want to and want to have a better life and have everything for my family. I dont want to report to someone for the resr of my life and i want to retire early .

I guess i am the opposite and i just dont understand people who are happy where they are though they could become soo much bigger in life.
When i worked for a company i made decent money but there was no room for improvement. I hit the ceiling with my wage and i could already calculate how much i will make till i retire.

Now i work twice as much comes hell or high water i am at work. I make sometimes nothing and other times 100k a month easy. It flactuates. But even now i still look for new ways to make money. Starting a second business that with little luck i can fully automize so i work the same hours but make again more money.

I am motivated.

But you will never experience this side of yours if you rely on someone else to feed you as in a company you work for.
For a lot of people its fine to be an employee for ever. Having stady income and security is all they want.

But for working for someone is just a stepping stone.
And cuz of this i am sorry but i look down on people who are lazy.
I know plenty of people who cry all ths time how hard they have it but at the same time they dont even try.
You want a better life do something about it. Other wise you are nothing but a slave.

Cool post man, I hope your second business goes well.

I'm only at the company I'm at because I have almost twice as many days off as I do work days. I work 170 days out of the year.

In my spare time I'm starting a business, just going through the process of starting my own consultancy business, which I can run in the time off from work. Best of both worlds really.

Plus, while my job is boring as fuck and kills me creatively, it is the easiest, most backwards, useless, technophobic, high-school-esque place I've ever worked. I took a step down from senior management to lower management so I could get the time off for my business.

Every now and then I'll try and steer the senior management in the right direction or help stop them from shooting themselves in the foot. They won't listen, even when I'm right they won't tell me I am. The other month my little birdies told me that, in a senior management meeting, they realised I was right about the solution to a problem, two weeks before they solved it. They all agreed to say the solution was something else, as "we can't tell boswollox he was right"

I love it 😂😂

I highly encourage you and anyone else to pay attention and follow every opportunity that presents itself.

If you found a way to start something on your own and follow through thats the first and most important step.
Its great you can do both as you have the time. And who knows maybe it turns into something big and you can shit on everyones head who will still work there after you moved on to bigger things.

I am happy for you.

In America in particular we worship work that's why people show up sick. we don't revere anything more than a person's strong work ethic. I'm going to assume it's religious roots in the idea that you should suffer and that suffering makes you a better person. That said it's great when someone finds a job they actually find fulfilling.

That happens to me every weekend I don't work.

But when I take a full week off? I wake up on my first free day and it's like going back to the first day of school vacations. No timetables, no phones ringing, no mails, not a worry on my mind. And not a single gram of guilt.

Having a strong work ethic doesn't mean you have to kill yourself working every single day of your life. And if I had no financial worries for the rest of my life, you can bet I'd take at least a week off every two months.

True, still doesn't mean its "natural" to work 12 hours a day for 6 days a week. Not even animals work that long to get their food. Prove that wrong.

I work everyday. I’m a migraine sufferer so that’s the only time I miss work and I rarely take vacations so I usually have plenty of PTO. If I do call out for a migraine I still end up feeling guilty about it. We’ve been brainwashed sadly. Humans were not meant to do what we do but if you want to have nice things this is the path you have to take. Unless you were born rich or whatever.
