What monster processor? Its almost certainly just a standard cortex A8 clocked slightly higher, i.e. the same CPU core that's in the 3G S and the decent iPods. Now, if it was a dual core cortex A9 (like it bloody well should have been considering the price, release date and size of the thing) then we'd be talking.

It all depends on how much it has been customized for the iPad. But as others have said, this is the first batch so they will be more expensive. Give it awhile and with more competition the prices will adjust.

The install base for the iPad is going to be significantly less than the install base of the iPhone/iPod Touch. In order for a company to make it worth their time to develop specifically for the iPad they're going to need to make more money per copy sold as a result of having a smaller customer base. The price of iPad games is going to be more expensive. Get used to it.

to be fair the iPad is like 5 times the size of the iPhone too
 
I tried playing an iPod Touch game, and my fingers were cluttering up the screen so much that I decided that platform wasn't worth my time. The iPad fixes that. But the lack of buttons still makes this a non-purchase.

It reminds me that Namco Bandai plays with the hearts of people who expected them to actually follow through when they announced Pac-Man CE for PSP Minis.
 
My iPad arrives on Saturday. I'm excited about PvZ, Peggle, and Risk. In fact, I feel like the iPad has the potential to revitalize the RTS market in a huge way - the game simply has to take advantage of the controls.

I tried playing PvZ on my Touch-Notebook and ended up playing it with mouse again. You are simply not fast enough because the ways you have to move your whole arm are too far. Sounds stupid but it's true :) Slow paced games work great with touch but speed games suck hard.

Yeah, not having to support the damn first-gen iPod Touch is a BIG step up. There's an iPhone game, Real Racing, best racing sim on the system, it's limited to only 6 cars at once since it was written for the iPhone 3G (it pretty much maxes out the system). They did a test on the 3GS, just adding more cars, not adding any effects or rewriting their engine in OpenGL ES 2.0 or anything, and they got 40 cars onscreen at once with no slowdown. But there's no way they would use that many polygons on iPhone due to having to support all the old systems.

Well here's the game running on iPad:

And even if the iPad is using the exact same CPU as the iPhone 3GS, but clocked 40% faster (which is a complete rumor published by one gadget blog), well, 40% faster than the 3GS is still damn fast for games, if they are written specifically for iPad.

Disclaimer: I'm an iPhone/iPad developer (but I don't work for Firemint, I'm porting over Dungeon Solitaire, a mix between Magic-style CCG's and Solitaire, to iPad). And before anyone asks, I don't know any tech specs, Apple doesn't even tell us developers that, and they haven't given us hardware to play with.
 
Oh, don't get me wrong, the SGX 535 is a very impressive little mobile GPU but people that believe the iPad is a huge leap above the 3G S are on the wrong track its definitely the same sort of performance category. You're right though, writing a dedicated OpenGL ES 2.0 engine is what's going to set games made specifically for the iPad apart. Its in a whole difference performance and featureset category.

It certainly should reduce the whole issue of fingers hiding the game from the player.

I just hope it does well enough that its worth building specific iPad versions of games rather than just scaled up iPod games.

Er, the thread backfired the instant the OP decided that the best way to promote ipad games was to show off ports of iPhone games, some of which seem to be straight uprezzings. Are we supposed to get excited for a psx-visuals skateboard game with two giant buttons? A pc/mac game released 9 months ago? A picture of real-life um... Axis and allies?

I suppose it's better than showing off the shifty gameloft halo knockoff that Jobs showed but still.
 
looking forward to seeing what devs who understand the platform will develop. screw the naysayers, the ipad is going to carve a niche of its own. i already absolutely love iphone gaming. i can only imagine how much more creativity will be unleashed on "tEH oversized iphone"

This pretty much. I have a feeling the naysayers are also some of the folks who doubted the iPhone's potential as a gaming platform.

Your statement doesn't make sense. DSi LL will get no unique software, nor will any software be modified when run on it. It's just a DS with a larger screen, same resolution and everything else. Games don't even know they are runing on DSi LL. The iPad, on the other hand, is a new platform, with games that won't run on the iPhone, and with games that do run on iPhone but are entirely different when run on the iPad. Talking about this stuff in the iPhone thread could cause confusion - a horrible iPhone game could be amazingly great on iPad, or vice/versa. Or just have entirely different features.

Thanks for clarifying that. Exactly. One of the confusions that people have is that this is "only a big iPhone". As the months come and go and more exclusive games are announced for the iPad, it will distinguish itself at least as a gaming platform from that of the iPhone/Touch. Many devs are very excited at its potential and many here have already confirmed that they have high hopes and expectations. Hopefully once its released on Saturday the "It's just a big iPhone" will go away.

Well, then get used to people justifiably making fun of ipad gaming until then, because unless you're like that crazy nintendo fan who, weirdly enough, thinks that games like crazy birds or orbital are as good as the best ds/psp games, what you're showing off looks like a novelty for people who have $500+ to blow.

i want the ipad for its videos, would be awesome while working out. and no, a netbook isnt better for it imo.

I found games like angry birds, space miner, monkey island, sf4, colorbind, doom, creeps and a myriad of other little games much more engaging than spirit towers, scribblenauts and professor Layton diabolical box, all of which I purchased last year. Out of the ds games I played last year, I only finished phantom hourglass. Layton was ok, but didn't compell me nough to finish it. Spirit Towers was hugely disappointing to me as was scribblenauts.

So in my opinion, I think the Best of the iPhone can stack up to the best of the ds.

Not that this has anything to do with what I feel about the ipad, but seriously Spirit Towers? I find it hard to take anyone seriously when they call it Spirit Towers.

Some games will be better on ipad for sure, but others will have the allure of portable ness.

For example, im not sure an ipad version of tetris is will be that necessary for me.
 
What's going to be really interesting are online games that can be played on both iPad and iPhone, like We Rule. In line or at work, play on the iPhone, then pick up where you left off on the iPad later.

For now, the HD version of my favorite iPhone games (Plants Vs Zombies, Flight Control, Worms, Tetris, Field Runners, etc.). Most of all though, I am excited about all the new possibilities. I get the feeling that RTS games are going to rock the iPad :D
