The Apple Tablet Thread Of It's Inevitable

I have it on good authority that this device's screen is not a circle.
Apple's really dropping the ball on ingenuity, then...

...a circle display? Truly revolutionary.
...another display that conforms to accepted resolutions? Just another tablet.

I personally was under the assumption the display was going to look like the Apple logo, with the leaf at the top being a status window and the screen portion being the interactive portion.

And, Valleywag offering up to $100,000 for information on the tablet. Yowza.

At what point does this hype go topsy-turvy and begin to hurt Apple when people's stratospheric expectations for this thing are not met? :) Or, have we reached that point already?
Expectations won't be met for the tech nerds and those that follow all these rumors obsessively. The general public has no expectations, however.

I think the tech-aware crowd is hyping the shit out of this thing, but the average consumer of this product is likely not even aware that an Apple tablet device is likely to get announced in a couple weeks, let alone what it may or may not potentially do.

There are going to be a ton of people that are going to be angry because what they thought this tablet was going to be ended up being something totally different. We're not all right :lol

We're victims of our own expectations.

This is not a joke: I just found out that a friend of a friend works for the company producing the touch panels. It's a Korean company.

Yeah yeah, I know. Friend of a friend. Ha ha. But it's apparently true. The dude got really nervous when I had my friend ask more questions about it. He got real pissed that my friend told me about it. :lol

Yes, totally useless information for us, but I found it a hilarious coincidence that I've been buried on this topic for the last few weeks and out of the blue my friend mentions about his friend and the iSlate. Wacky.

This is exactly why I'm keeping my expectations in check and just hoping for the best. If this thing is too expensive and/or doesn't offer functionality that benefits me, I'll have no problems passing on it, and going with a Kindle/Nook instead.

So what are the latest rumours on pricing? Will be the dealbreaker if they're usually bullshit Apple prices. Are they expected to come with a huge bs apple tax?

No, this is going to be the first Apple product in 20 years that's priced competitively with bobo-brand shite just to get cheapasses to finally stop asking this stupid question.

Yeah coming into a widely Apple-fan regulared thread, throwing around the BS "bs Apple tax" line, on a product we don't know shit about.

Good idea.

But the "bs Apple tax" has a true perception though. Name me one Apple product that doesn't appear to be more expensive than the competition?

So? I'm an Apple fan too, I've bought an iPhone and several iPods, which are much better competitively priced than their desktops and laptops, which, in my opinion, carry the BS "Apple tax" that I can't justfy (cause I'm a cheapass too apparently) for largely similar specs to something else. If its completely new and innovative, then it's worth it to me for an extra hundred or so. Apple Hi-Fi? Eh not so much.

eh apple products are more expensive but it also comes with iwork and ilife, and a pretty generous support system genius bar. What they suck at is there warranties every product has one year.

i don't post a lot in this thread but i've been stalking a bunch and happen to have a close relative who has been heavily involved in the islate's production. everyone's trying to figure out what is and isn't going to be a part of the tablet within the next week and a half, well i went out drinking with my uncle and got him super wasted. we went back to my place and he showed me an actual prototype that should be pretty close to the finished product, only in a hardbody plastic case rather than what will be an aluminum body. i'm surprised nobody has brought this up in their speculations but they were right about the 3-d aspect of interaction. this thing is slick, and the new lit app looks pretty snappy for something that is just digital ink. but sorry the bomb of information that i am going to drop knowing that there is no way that anyone can find me and kick my teeth in for putting it on the internet early is that this thing actually has a housing in the back of it for frying up to four strips of bacon, and i shit you not they must have spent YEARS getting this to work right because it is the most perfect and crispy bacon i have ever had in my entire life-- within just 30 seconds of waiting. all islate packages are to be shipped with a sample pack to drive the new hardware feature home and reign in a new era of interfacing with your computer as more than just a machine to get on the internet

The perception is true, but Apple products hold their value. Shit, I just sold a Mac Mini G4 that I bought almost 5 years ago for $320 ($599 originally).

Unless you live in a city without an Apple store then you're fucked.

Great! In the absence of any real information on the Tablet, we've resorted to the "Apple products are too expensive!" argument. Wake me up when it's the 27th!

no and then you'll miss all the fun.

edit: doesn't matter. I was only joking about the iPhone creating the market. It didn't come across very well. move along.

Macbook Air vs the weaker and higher priced HP Voodoo Envy and Dell Adamo.

iMac vs the cheaper but way less powerful and smaller HP and Dell all-in-ones.

I think some of these patents are just diversionary tactics

Wouldn't be surprised if that were the case.

The stylus thing... I could see it. I think a phone is too small a device to be purely controlled via stylus. But a tablet -- I could see that. Actually I could see either finger or stylus input supported. So you can use your finger for most things or all things if you want, but there's also a stylus. Or maybe Apple's come up with a better way to control without the stylus (like that pen-grip thing). In 2 weeks we'll know!

For anyone who still thinks the Tablet doesn't exist, Apple has sicked the lawyers on Valleywag over the Tablet bounty:

Apple cease and desist said:
As your offer acknowledges, Apple has maintained the types of information and things you are soliciting -- "how it'll work, its size, the name, the software", as well as any possible details about the product's appearance, features, and physical samples -- in strict confidence. Anyone who might have access to such information would be bound under the strictest contractual obligations not to disclose the information to third parties.

It doesn't get any more real than that, folks.

What kind of crazies thought that?

I'm curious the magnitude of the tablet (call it the Slate damnit iSlate sucks donkey balls).
Like will it just be a nice addition? A revolution? It's going to be interesting to see...

I hope it's Apple's attempt at changing portable computers but methinks it'll just be a smaller thing especially given the sizes.

I think it's real but that doesn't prove it.

There's probably a law somewhere that makes it illegal to offer people money to break their nda

If it wasn't real, they would not have used that language. It would have been standard C&D boilerplate, or nothing at all.

That is pretty boilerplate. They would send the same type of letter to someone offering money for information on a touchscreen iMac or a CDMA iPhone.

Well, Gizmodo agreed with me, Tuaw didn't. Whatever, I just thought it was interesting. I think everyone hear knows the Tablet is real at this point, anyway.

I've never posted in here because I'm not an apple guy (iPod Touch 16gb is all I have).

BUT, I think I have something that might be of interest to some of you. My bro-in-law works for Apple in their marketing division. They've been working on this marketing campaign for the last year and they're appaprently starting to wind down. My b-i-l refused to go on vacation with my sister (his wife) because there was no way he could go while they were working on their strategies and getting the capmpaign ready to roll.
Well, as of yesterday, he's now free to take his vacation. They'll be going to cancun next month, but apparently he's free to go whenever he wants now. Work is done. His end of it anyway.

ANYWAY, here's the tidbit you guys might be interested in most:

My sister let slip, that my b-i-l told her that the tablet will use some kind of revolutionary 'finger tip' cover which focuses the fingers touch to a much smaller point on the tablet screen. Basically, as things are now, if you put your finger on a heat-sensitive touch screen(iPhone), it covers a certain amount of space and the screen reads it all. This coverage is sometimes too much and it can get clumsy... especially for art-based programs. Well, the tablet is supposed to be super sensitive and reads every little input.

You can imagine trying to draw something really fine with your finger and its covering way too much screen.

So, this thing slips on to or over your finger and neutralizes your finger's heat signature and instead, has a really fine heat source at the very tip. It basically narrows the heat signature from being as big and thick as your finger, to a really fine point on the end, which allows more detailed input to the screen.

She also mentioned some 'fancy' (her word) new type of ink which explodes (her words, probably from him though, he speaks that way) off the screen. Very dark "zero" blacks (contrast?) and a state of the art battery with ridiculous life.

Well, that is all. Not much as far as specs, but I thought it was cool with the art possibilities.. and what not.

I know GAF loves art. Oh and it makes bacon, lulz, it prints money!

Laterz.

I don't know what to make out of any of this.

Nope, not buying this part. They might as well go with a stylus then. Perhaps the new touch surface can sense variations of the fingerprint for precision.

Indeed. I'm looking at options for a laptop and well configured i7's (6-8GB of ram, discrete graphics, blue ray read/write, 500gb hdd's, etc come with 15-17" 1080 screens at around 1500€). Apple's equivalent (supposing they use i7's wich is something we don't even know yet) won't be available for less than 2000€. Not to mention expresscard wich is sort of a biggie since I'm planning to plug a Tempo Pro on it.

They make great stuff, no doubt (I'm writing this on a 2007 iMac) but they demand a hefty premium, which is not always rewarded with additional features.

I'm calling bullshit on the iThimble that you'd have to put over your finger to work with the Tablet. That sounds so incredibly un-Apple, and I agree with the sentiment above. Might as well go with a stylus at that point.

Did I mention that the reasoning behind the thimble (lol) over the stylus is because your finger will always be a more natuarl movement than holding a small and thin stylus.

Ever try signing your signature on those credit card pads? Turrrrible.

Considering the iPhone, nor any other multitouch, or even single touch device detects 'Heat' from your fingers, it sounds rather like a load of old bozwolloks to me.

There must be a PC/Google thread where these guys are yucking it up over trolling us. I can feel it.
