How do you know it's fake? I wish it was real.

there was one cause for concern in the video - when he holds his finger for a "right click" it looks like windows 7/vista tablet interface (sweeping circle)

And a bunch for other inconsistencies. Like the little x for closing popups in the right in the first video (Macs nearly always use the left), and the second, it;s on the left (and in one instance, he taps the popup and it closes without using the x).

To be fair, I see that little X thing on a lot of websites nowadays and I think you can click anywhere and it closes.
The video just generally looks fake.

Damn, that video made me want to buy new furniture something fierce.

how’s that for awful conspicuous consumerism? Buy a pricey tablet so I can buy more shit in flashy new ways. :lol

Even though it's fake, that video does a really good job of showing how fucking good this could be. Imagine doing anything better than shopping for furniture but getting that kind of response and direct interaction with the screen.

That'd be superb. But, purely cos of my crappy wireless connection in my flat, I know the reality wouldn't be as slick.

It would be like an iPhone! But BIG!

I knew it was fake when he shook the screen. Real Ikea furniture would have fallen apart like kindling.

i just really hope this thing has a stylus and digitizer - while i do love the iphone like capacitive interface, having it for drawing too would be a damn godsend. i would carry it everywhere... it would be my poor mans mobile cintiq

Problem is that I don't think you could get that kind of response on a slow-ass 3G connection.....probably not even Wifi. It'd have to be an app that's already loaded onto the phone, not a frontend for an online store that's downloading pictures and data in real time.

Yeah, I figure that kind of responsiveness would require an app (or equivalent digital magazine format that gets intro’d next week).

Yeah I really hope it has 4 gigs of RAM, a Core i5 CPU, a 120 gig SSD, Firewire 800, Mini DisplayPort out, is capable of running Snow Leopard Server.

Oh, and I want it to cost under $500, otherwise it's a complete rip.

A thin bezel would be nice, since it means almost the entire area is screen real estate, but then what area of the device do you grip? I think there needs a decent amount of bezel on the device so you can hold a thumb there and not have it register an input. That is not a problem on an iPhone because the device is small enough to grip both sides, but the size of a tablet means your thumb will more than likely be on the front of the device for support.

Ugh, just announce it and tell me how much my wallet will be raped to buy one.

interaction I can understand, but response? wouldn't be any different from a laptop - you're dependent on your connection. If its cached for performance that means an app. Perhaps apps are more likely if its an iphone-based system though

edit: just watched the video. Just looks like a nice flash based website that'd run on any laptop.

I think I'm annoyed by this for one simple reason - So far I've seen nothing that couldn't be done on a PC via a web browser. Assuming these kinds of things are real - why has it taken until now for companies to start looking at presenting their media/stores in new and more interactive ways, why haven't they been doing it for years now?

For one thing, you're crazy if you think that could have been done in Flash years ago.

Second, forget the catalogs, we're expecting that level of interaction across the entire OS.

Third, saying this could be done on any laptop is like saying the iPhone experience could be had on any phone with a d-pad. Digging into the apps with your fingers in a tablet form factor is a large part of what makes this exciting.

Fourth, The reason these companies all seem to be getting it is that Apple has demonstrated the benefits of this type of interaction for three years. They are taking the lessons learned from the iPhone and expanding on them.

OMG, did you guys see this!!!!!!

Xater is excited about the tablet!

Hey I have expressed nothing but interest for this thing so far. I am still hoping it can replace my Macbook which doesn't require that much functionality.

Given the leak, the prototype that MSoft had sems like it will cater mroe to what Im looking for (love the dual screen display, for instance) but well see! Im excited were finally getting to this point tech wise though.

If they announce this thing next week, what are the chances it's in stores same/next day? I'm thinking slim. Spring launch?

I think it's more likely that it won't be until spring.

Another speculative question: is it possible this thing will have enough functionality that I can flat-out replace my existing MacBook Pro with it? Presuming use of a bluetooth keyboard/mouse and some kind of stand to prop it up on a tabletop.

We've heard anywhere from March to June rumored, but they'll want June for the new iPhone. Closer to March seems likely. You never know, though.

that’s certainly what I’ve been hoping and championing for.

but I doubt it.

We won't know until Wednesday, but I would rather keep my MBP than rely on an unproven product to substitute all of my actions on my laptop.
I have a little faith than that. Hell my iPhone already does more than half of the stuff I needed my laptop for.

Eh, I don't know. I do video-editing, audio mixing, all the iWork stuff, plus Transmission downloads...

If it does all of that, and does it well, I guess I'd consider it. But I can't imagine it does all of those things.

We pretty much know that this thing is ARM powered. So the answer is no, both hardware power wise and software wise.
