Yeah I know. But on the other side of the coin, it seems more plausible than past rumors considering these rumors of being a "giant iPhone" and also separate ones about having data and all that for the tablet.

Here could be the iChat Video mobile thing people were wanting too?

Yeah. Bad pacing maybe? But seems to me that he was getting them geeked about 3 different products, the spinny thing blurred them together and seeing that they caught on, skipped forward.

However one strange thing about that press conference is that he unveils the iPhone almost nonchalantly. He's like "no this is it" but then puts it back in his pocket. Maybe it's because I'm used to video game companies hyping their console and saving the reveal for the climax moment, but in retrospect, it seemed anticlimactic. At the time it all was super geeky excitement.

In fact, I was so excited about the 1st Gen iPhone, I still have mine and haven't upgraded. :lol

Btw, I guess they will include something so that when you turn your tablet around, the screen turns too...
I just hope they let us lock it. I hate when I'm with my iPod touch checking Internet from my bed, and when I turn to one side I have to keep the iPod vertical or else everything will go widescreen.. I seriously HATE that.

I'm watching the reveal again - and I LOVE that. He teases the audience. He's got one in his pocket. It's like the MacBook Air reveal. He has one sitting at the podium - in an envelope!

But that iPhone announcement is a must-see. It really reveals how they think about products. He details how the mouse was a revolutionary control device for a computer. And the Click Wheel for the iPod. And multi-touch for the iPhone. If the Tablet is a revolutionary new product, you have to really consider what control system works best for it. The tablet is not held the same as a phone. Maybe it controls by holding it or with new gestures that suit the device.

Anyway, the pacing of the announcement is amazing. What they choose to display first, how they choose to reveal features - it's all scripted so perfectly. Each reveal hits a beat, and it just keeps ramping up. I'm hoping for the same level of showmanship for the announcement on WEdnesday.

I liked the pocket thing because he pulls it out and then they cut away real quick, but then they use the image of the blank screen iPhone.
It was like just...there. But yeah your right, it was amazing on the whole. I guess I'm splitting hairs over small details.

Any who Wednesday will be awesome we're going to be watching it at work. :lol

I am sooooo hyped for this !!! My only fear for now is the 3G aspect. If it really has a 3G connectivity in it, that means Apple will need to find an operator for each country in which they want to sell the tablet. And this means it may take some time to get it for people not living in the US ... T_T
The event should start around 3am for me here, so I am still not sure if I should stay awake or wait until the next morning to watch it...

Still not convinced it would have 3G when you can tether it to your phone so easily.

I went to the library this weekend with my MBP and iPhone to meet a friend so we could plan our trip overseas, and I thought it would be a good time to test out the iPhone tethering. I hadn't read on how to set it up, but it only took a minute to figure it out and it worked like a charm. I even kept the phone in my pocket the whole time, it was amazing.

It's was strange to me that such a complex networking setup over bluetooth, over 3G would be so easy.

Then again, not all the operators allow the tethering on the iPhone. Softbank here in Japan didn't allow it for instance. I am jealous of those of you who can do that :(
So if there's no 3G in the tablet, we're stuck because no tethering, and if there's 3G, we're gonna have to wait until Apple signs contracts with everyone... I hate this !

Remember when he pulled the iPod Nano out of his back pocket? Steve has a habit of introducing new products in quirkly and rememberable ways. It all started with the original iMac on a rising/rotating plinth.

He'll probably do something similar with the tablet. Maybe bring out a binder and start to flick through photos of CES tablets, then he turns a page and the tablet is there in one of the wallets running an animation.

It was the little pocket on the side, the one that's inside the normal pocket. I guess it's used for change or something. He pulls a nano out of it and he's like "you know I always wondered what this pocket was for." Crowd goes wild.

It's funny because it's a crowd of journalists. They're not supposed to go wild. They're just there to report on what's being shown. But he gets them riled up every time.

I think the biggest reason Apple gets wild crowds isn't just because of the Reality Distortion Field, but because Apple shows off shipping products. Everyone else constantly shows off product mockups, teasers, prototypes, ideas, etc, but Apple says "this shit is real and it's shipping now" so you get hyped. I remember a few years ago Gates showed off some fucking home server computer and had like demos set up in a fake house showing how it could be used in every room, and the kid's room was controlled with some tablet and it had like a goddamn strobe light mode or something silly for when the kid wanted it. Haven't seen this thing come out yet. It's just a waste of everyone's time.

Maybe Steve Jobs will come on wearing a pair of dungarees and pull the Tablet out the big pocket on the front.

"SURPRISE!"

Oh Apple hand pics a bunch of fanboi stooges, they aren't true journalists lol. Apple probably has political officers who watch the crowd and note who isn't cheering loud enough so they can revoke their invite for the following year. :lol

That's cuz you're probably using a MacBook right? MacBooks are terrible when it comes to heat. Get a better laptop that handles cooling better like an Asus. They're damn cool to touch on the bottom and sits on my lap super comfortably. I balance it on my upper leg just fine while watching TV. Just like I'm doing now while posting this and watching Lost.

the heat is less of an issue than the poor ergonomics. it gets hot when watching flash video for more than 30 minutes but I deal. the biggest issue is the keyboard. if i'm only gonna type once every 20 minutes into a google bar, i'd prefer a device that did away with the physical keyboard. An asus laptop like you recommend is not what I'm talking about.

Well it's not different than Nintendo press conferences, really. It's journalists, yes, but a lot of them are Apple/gadget fans. So it's like when Nintendo announced a new Zelda game or Samus pops up on the screen and everyone cheers. :)

Yes. This. And at CES it was friggin' ridiculous how many devices were shown where the demo was *just* e-Reading or watching a video or my favorite, the "look, I'm touching the screen and it's creating colored circles. Isn't that AMAZING?" No, no it's not amazing and while you might have a decent product here you should probably show off a real-world use of the damn thing.

Oh yeah, I was there for the 2004 announcement of Twilight Princess. Big dudes were crying, and everyone got on their cell phone as we all walked out to call people and yell about what they just saw.

And definitely knowing this was a shipping Zelda game that was really going to come out instead of that early Zelda render from years before helped the hype get big.

Yeah, I'm totally on board the hype train now.

Mobile analytics firm Furry released new statistics this week on what it claims are approximately 50 devices that were "reliably" placed on Apple's campus.... Peter Farago, VP of of Marketing with the firm, noted that Flurry believes the devices running iPhone OS 3.2 are tablets because the hardware, when asked via software, did not identify itself as an iPhone. He also said that some devices testing iPhone OS 4.0 have been spotted -- but they leave the Cupertino campus, while those running iPhone OS 3.2 do not.

Those 50 tablets probably come with 50 well trained mercenaries to protect them.

That quote is just pouring naptha on a fanboy fire at this point. it's awesome. says nothing specific, but gets everyone ooh-ing and ahh-ing

While I'd like to think it's true, I cant help but think it's a misquote due to being heard from second and third hand sources.

A shame he already used that envelope thing unveiling the Macbook Air. Otherwise, it would be good for them unveil it like Mr. Indredible - throwing all the old magazines and books into the trash, then *clunk* hey, what's this?

I always laugh at the part where he introduces three things:

Widescreen iPod with touch controls (Huge cheer)
A REvolutionary Mobile Phone (Crowd goes wild!)
A internet communication device (Crowd goes, "huh?" and claps politely)

What I don't get is he repeats it twice (ipod-phone-internet communicator, ipod-phone-internet communicator), and then goes for a third time, but doesn't complete the cycle, instead, stopping on the phone ("Are you getting it?"). Was this deliberate? to not complete the cycle? IT seems so, as there was no next slide (unless it was cut). Seems odd to me. OR if he had enough control in his clicker to go to whatever slide he wanted (i.e. control what was being shown as opposed to just clicking forward).
He was saying are you getting it, these three things are one product.

Here's my list of Steve's product size demonstrations:

Bag = Macintosh (1984)
Deck of Cards = original iPod (2001)
Pack of Gum = iPod Shuffle (2005)
Pencil = iPod Nano (2006)
Envelope = MacBook Air (2007)

He never used one for iPhone or iPod Touch. Interesting to see what he does with the tablet.

Listening to TWIT right now. Leo thinks OLED, but all agree that this device is going to probably be subsidized with some kind of TV subscription.

genius!

Gawd, I hope it's not *TIED* to a TV subscription service (at least not pay). Ugh. That seems very un-Apple to me for one, and two, I already have cable and if I want a show on iTunes I'll buy it separately thanks very much.

I'm going out on a limb right now and saying that there is no way the screen is OLED (too expensive) nor tied to a TV subscription. These rumors are getting way out of hand, and people wonder why they are disappointed when the new devices don't meet expectations.

exactly.

Seriously, I stopped listening to TWIT years ago because of stuff like this. They're all over the damn place. I get better analysis hanging around on gaf.

I hope they are not right just as much as everyone else. Leo didn't even think there would be a browser on the damn thing but the other people talked him out of it lol.

what on earth kind of device was he expecting? Apple's version of Sony's portable TV? :lol

Yeah he thought it was going to be basically a media playing device, not really a PC, tied to Apple's content delivery system. TV, books, magazines, etc.... not really a general purpose computer at all.

That's IN-sane. I can't imagine Apple introducing a tablet product without Safari front and center on it. Just can't. I imagine we'll also see a different setup to browse printed content (that may include some web content), but no browser? What-the-fuck-ever. :) While I think other companies seem to be introducing slate computers that are only good for media capabilities (or have only demoed media stuff like video/books/music), I don't think that'll be how Apple approaches it.

So these guys are talking out their ass and don't even try to use the logic?.

It's crazy to me watching the MacWorld 2007 conference again and seeing the iPhone reveal.

That thing was only 3 years ago and everything being shown is something that I fully take for granted...and it didn't even have the App Store yet.

"5 years ahead of it's time" actually doesn't seem too crazy in retrospect. There are still things the iPhone did out the gate that other phones don't have at all, like visual voicemail or an easy to use interface (relative, but there's nothing easier than iPhone, no question).

I really hope that this thing isn't a total dud. My simple mind can't create a product that makes sense for the mainstream in mass quantities like an iPod or an iPhone. Everything I come up with doesn't seem like a product that has a role, but instead creates a role that doesn't feel necessary.

I'm completely 50/50 on this thing. It's either going to be "Oh..." or "OH!"

http://www.macrumors.com/2010/01/25...dly-working-closely-with-apple-on-tablet-app/

As part of a broad report in advance of Apple's media event scheduled for Wednesday, The Los Angeles Times claims that a team of New York Times employees has been traveling to Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California to work on a new version of the newspaper's iPhone application offering video and optimized for a large-screen tablet device.

Apple has been slowly amassing digital reading material for the forthcoming device. A team from the New York Times has been working in Apple's Cupertino, Calif., headquarters in recent weeks, developing a large-screen version of the newspaper's iPhone application that incorporates video for the yet-to-be-unveiled device, according to one person with knowledge of the matter. A Times spokeswoman declined to comment.
The claim is reminiscent of a story related by the developers of flight simulator application X-Plane 9, who were invited to Cupertino to work alongside Apple's engineers to port their application to the iPhone in hopes of demonstrating it at the company's "Let's Rock" media event in September 2008.

The New York Times has long held a close relationship with Apple in regards to the iPhone platform, frequently finding itself featured in demonstrations at media events and keynotes. Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger, Jr. revealed last week, however, that he will not be attending Apple's media event, and when pressed for comment on Apple's involvement with the newspaper's plans for restructuring online access, said only "Stay tuned."

Ladies and Gentlemen, the CEO of Google, Dr. Eric Schmidt!

"Hey Steve, we should merge!"

Wow, the worm has truly turned.

Edit: And now, Jerry Yang of Yahoo!

Yeesh, lots of burned bridges and corporate casualties in just three years.

I did chuckle at that. Google is in a very strange place now that they've gone and created their own brand of operating system instead of just lending their web applications to other operating system creators.

It used to be: "Google is the greatest, and you can use their products everywhere!"
It's turning into: "Google is the greatest, but you can only really get the best experience with them on their own platform."

I liked Google a lot better when they extended other platforms, not creating their own and gimping others. Nothing is obviously stopping other OSs from using Google products, but Google has made themselves a direct competitor that they now force the creators to either directly market their competitor or use more than likely inferior alternatives (Bing! for example) instead.

I don't dislike Google, but they're playing a very interesting game right now.

The one thing I think of when considering this a media device is what has everyone been carping about in regards to their cable subscription:

Namely that they cannot pick and choose their content.

The problem with this, however, is that the two pieces of content that are almost impossible to unlink from your cable subscription is sports and live news (unless you just want to be stuck with the local news). If Apple could somehow take this device as a media hub and figure out a way to allow delivery of those two items (not far fetched, as MS is rumored to be in contract talks with ESPN to deilver live events) then they could have something revolutionary.

I don't think it will go down this road though, espcially since the internet pipes are mostly controlled by cable providers, who would have the most to lose.

Ye gods, Stan Sigman, CEO of Cingular. (imagine a Texas football coach in an ill-fitting blazer).

Tries to brag about his vision of working with Apple and then pulls out 4x6 cards and reads (poorly) to the audience how great the upcoming merger with AT&T is going to be. :lol

I'm so hyped for this event it's unreal, I have no need for this device as I already have a iPhone and carry a 12" HP laptop where ever I go, but the hype's so strong I think im just gonna buy the damn thing just for the hell of it.
