i see your point, but there are some (bad bad bad) sites that actually require flash to navigate properly and use the site at all. those sites are still going to prompt people to install flash, and although i can imagine that minority will shrink, it will take a while :( i mean safari/os x comes with a built in flash plugin now so you don't even have a choice about installing it, although i guess you could delete it :lol

I'm pretty sure most web developers won't mind a shift from Flash, but beyond that entirely Flash dependent web sites are pretty few and far between these days, and will only shrink as mobile web browsing grows. Publishers won't want to completely block out an audience. I've personally already seen a pretty big shift, namely in restaurant websites here in NYC. Pre-iPhone 100% Flash pages with basic restaurant info and menus to some cheesy lounge music were common. I've seen fewer and fewer as time went on. How much iPhone is to thank and how much is purely shifting from something that sucks, one can't say.

I just turned my pc in to a mac over the weekend, what i really don't like about the mac os x is the single window model, i can't do side by side windows with out a script. Since iphone is limited to one object window at a time it's not a big deal, but for the tablet if i want to browse the web and watch a video at the same time will it let me?

what

home button, but it does not take you 'home' like on the iPhone. What it does is pop up a dock, a la OS X, where you can launch iPhone and tablet specific apps as well as items like books that you've added to it for quicker access. The dock is not a permanent fixture on the screen, only appearing when it's specifically accessed (unlike iPhone where its 'dock' is there 100% of the time that you're not in an app).

i'd like to see something like the dock grid/fan stuff for that like in snow leopard.

  • I quite like your ideas on the dock and home button

Are you guys new?

If I had a dollar for every time a major release from Apple has leaked online early, I would have ZERO DOLLARS.
I mean I know we're excited, but c'mon. I'd expect it from das Juniorkind, but not all ya'll.

The majority of us aren't falling for it and even the person who posted it realizes it is a fake. Don't know who you are aiming at?

Well, macmac doesn't have the same ring :p. iMac was the first so it gets a pass. I think that's why they moved from iBook to MacBook to highlight that it's a mac computer.

Not thinking about it too hard, there may be more, but the iMac G4 and iPod 5G both leaked before hand.

I think the fat iPod nano appeared beforehand as did pictures of the unibody MacBooks.

Also to move away from the Power- moniker, since they shifted from PowerPC processors.

Shoot first, ask questions later! :lol

"LackofiMac-itis", it makes you very irritable. Don't blame me, I have a disease.

  • 10.1" transflective display
  • Home button, but it does not take you 'home' like on the iPhone.
  • In the dock, applications are capable of opening multiple windows, which show up in stacks the same as OS X.
  • Books come with tools such as highlight, clip, bookmark, and underlining/free writing through use of your finger.
  • The tablet does not store your music. Instead, you are able to stream from your iTunes library via Apple's recent acquisition of Lala Media.
  • On the same note, the tablet also does not store movies or TV shows. Instead, you can stream your shows/movies from your iTunes library a la Apple TV.
  • Apple adds the option of a monthly subscription service for TV and/or movies, where you can stream the shows immediately to the tablet.
  • iWorks '10 is an HTML5 service that stores your notes/documents from class and work in the cloud so that there is no finder visible to the user on the tablet. The OS gives an option of saving PDFs and other files directly to iWorks/iDisk.
  • The device does not have integrated 3G/4G access or, it is access much like the Kindle where people can download eBooks but they have to be within range of WiFi to browse web pages, etc.
I'll probably think of more, but that's what strikes me as plausible at the moment.

So you're saying it doesn't have 3G/4G (except for media purchases), and that to do anything else you need WiFi? I don't see that happening. It's too confusing.

Also, there's no way it will access media exclusively through streaming. How are you supposed to watch/listen to media on an airplane or out of the country? Even with a fully dedicated and always-on 3G/4G connection, you're still without a connection on an airplane or overseas.

Perhaps you'll be able to store all the media you want on it, and if something isn't on your tablet, it can be accessed via streaming. But there's no way that it will lack any media storage and access media via streaming only. That's putting WAY too much power/faith in the hands of the wireless telcos, which is not something Apple ever does (putting trust in another company).

I'm not taking any sort of ban bet here but here's my crystal ball. :)

Hardware
- 10" or 10.1" LCD screen
- Two sizes - 32 and 64GB
- SIM card slot for optional 3G connectivity (not sold subsidized by Apple), user can choose what carrier they want to use
- Wifi and bluetooth and tethering
- Has a stylus (pop-out stylus?)
- Accelerometer controls
- No front-facing camera
- No support for either a bluetooth keyboard or mouse

OS, software, UI
- Runs OSX in the same way iPhone runs OSX, with interface much like the iPhone.
- Locked down. No direct file system access.
- Customizable locked screen that displays certain widgets even when device is still locked (email, weather, stocks, last IM message received)
- Interface much like the iPhone. Limited multitasking available.
- eReader app which will aggregate all your printed content into one place (no separate publisher apps). Books, RSS, magazines, newspapers.
- Tablet versions of iLife and iWork apps.
- Syncs all your content stuff through the cloud if you have Mobile Me. If not, wired syncing.

Cost
- I'm going to go way, way out on a limb here. $399 (32GB) / $499 (64GB).
- Dock sold separately for $50.

I think its safe to say that at least one major feature we all hope it includes will not be included, simply to offer an upgraded version next year. Whether its a front facing camera, or what, who knows. However, we know Apple and we know they will do this.

I don't really see it as confusing. The only thing to understand is that you can download books/magazines anywhere, but you have to be at a hotspot to use any internet functions. Unless Apple were to work out some amazing deal with AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon etc where the tablet works under their existing data plan, I just don't see that being anything but an option. $80-100 a month just to use my iPhone and tablet? F U! :lol

Good point. For the record, I was thinking of WiFi and not 3G, heh.

OLED. rumor is it's coming later on.

I'd say this offical quote from Steve Jobs today for the Q1 earnings is somewhat significant.

"The new products we are planning to release this year are very strong, starting this week with a major new product that we're really excited about."

aaaawwwww yyyeeeaaahhhh! Shake-Zula.The mic-rula,The old schoolah, Ya wanna trip? I'll bring it to ya.

Yeah I posted this before, the best thing is that he said products plural

Seriously! I use to think that no conference could hype me up like E3's and hardware reveals, I was wrong. I AM SO PSYCHED!

Here is my big prediction:

You are all wrong in thinking it will sport a user interface just like the iPhone. I think it will take cues from it, but not much more.

I think the hardware side will be the least interesting part of the conference. If it's 'just a big iPod touch' then I think I'll fail to see the point.

Silly question but is there any confirmation Jobs will be heading this event? I can't imagine he won't be as word is he's healthy, and this is his baby and he's been hands on for a while (along with the recent "most important thing I've done" comment), but a friend of mine is badgering me convinced he won't be there.

ah, sorry didn't see your older post.

still an interesting turn of phrase how he considers it a "major" new product.

as for the plural of products... well, yeah, of course. new iPhones, iPods, macs, etc, etc. new products can easily refer to updates to existing lines.

edit: @snakeXs. no confirmation but we're all thinking along the same lines as you

Who here is saying it will? I think most of the logical people here are stating exactly what you are.

Here is MY big prediction:

Your prediction will be correct, but some people ITT will still call it a big iPod Touch.

the best thing about all this, is that i'd love it even if it was just a giant ipod touch since using a laptop just for browsing gaf and reading rss/twitter is somewhat redundant. but we all know it will be so much more :D

So, the announcement is tomorrow right? What time is it and what blogs should I look at for feeds/writings as it goes on? I'm assuming low probability of video or is it supposed to be a big event?

Edit: Jobs better be there! >:(

No, its Wednesday and starts at 10AM PST. Engadget will be blogging it live. Also, we will have an official thread here and I am sure you will be able to follow the updates accordingly.

With all the 500 errors we've been getting lately I'm going to avoid the frustration and just stay off of GAF on Wednesday morning.

Tomorrow's tomorrow morning you mean.
LovingSteam said:

Sure.

I'll leave the actual device thread to you. I do recommend holding back until the conference is over, but people will likely be quick to jump the gun on the thread creation because it's very likely to be big news, so I'm not sure how you could guarantee you'd get it.

:lol @ your price predictions. I fixed them up for you.

I dunno. We'll see. And yeah I expect that this place is going to be nothing but 500 errors on Wednesday morning considering it's already 500 errors with nothing happening!
