i remember there was a video of the iphone reveal keynote afterwards. i might wait for video rather than reading liveblogs or i will explode with frustration not being able to see it in action

I'll leave the actual device thread to you. I do recommend holding back until the conference is over, but people will likely be quick to jump the gun on the thread creation because it's very likely to be big news, so I'm not sure how you could guarantee you'd get it.

Well to clarify I don't mean to say it'll use the EXACT OS. More like a "flavor" or variant. But I think it'll look an awful lot more like the iPhone OS than Mac OSX.

This is what I'm saying too.

According to Apple, the iPhone runs on OS X. We all know it runs on a highly optimized version of OS X "for iPhone". OS X for iPhone has a radically different user interface compared to OS X "for Macintosh". The same will be true of the Tablet. It will run on OS X "for Tablet". I know he's not infallible, but Gruber is predicting the same thing. It just makes sense, given what we know about how Apple operates.

There is no way Apple will release a new product and shoe-horn an existing OS into it like Microsoft does. Windows Vista "for Tablets" was just Windows Vista with some UI hacks. OS X "for Tablet" will have the same OS X core as OS X "for Macintosh" and OS X "for iPhone" but will have a totally new user interface written from the ground up. However, since both the iPhone and Tablet are multi-touch devices, there are bound to be plenty of things in the UI taken from what they learned about multi-touch on iPhone.
 
I dunno guys, I'm getting a bad feeling about this. Steve has been running around telling how the tablet is the most important thing he's ever done, and today in the investor call Apple execs were really smug about it. I'm not doubting Apple's ability to generate awesome products, but that's a bad omen. Pretty much every time they've been so excited themselves... well, I hope this is no Cube.

Aside from the tablet, the one thing I am hoping to see is a little healthier looking Jobs. Hopefully he has put on 15-20 pounds since we last saw him.

That being said, I just re-watched the iPhone reveal and it has me hyped. If Apple put up a link for the device, not knowing anything about it, I would pre-order right now :lol

Ha! Now that I think about it, I was actually referring to Windows XP/Vista UMPC (aka psudo-tablet) Edition. It was just Windows XP/Vista with some crazy keyboard overlay on the touchscreen in the corners, along with some other hacks. Very strange, and totally stupid.

I actually know nothing about Windows 7 for Tablets.

If anything the recent comments dashed my worries about it being another Apple "hobby", a la Apple TV.
 
During the Q&A today, Tim Cook stated "- Tim Cook stated during the Q&A section, "We believe we are shipping the best product we've ever shipped and are very excited about the product pipeline." Don't know if he is talking about the past or the future.

Apple keeps the prices on everything the same all the time. Price drops are rare events. This is why there's the usual crybaby "but I just bought one yesterday!" when an update comes out, because the price is going to be the same from one day to the next. Other companies will gradually drop prices over time on older products.
 
as a long time iphone owner and new-er macbook pro owner im still interested in this for some unknown reason

i really dont need a new device, but im sure i will try to justify this. Maybe if they included IR and an amazing universal remote program so i dont have to buy that $200 harmony ive been eyeing
 
I found an area of my life that no gadget does well. iPhone is (genuinely) too small, and I don't like using laptops for it.

Reading manga/comics.

but who am I kidding this is never gonna happen, people can barely make good comic readers on macs so a built in reader is not happening, particularly with all the different formats they come in and we'd need a nice way to sync it to the device. And it'd need 3g to let me read it online so that routes questionable.

Damn, funny that my ps3 is my reader of choice cos it allows me to lie in bed and zoom around easily on a big screen. But manga on the go is the ultimate dream.

of course I refer to unlicensed unreleased manga not yet available in the west!

There is an excellent comic reader on the iPhone right now called Comiczeal. The only issue I have with it is screen size. From what we are hearing, it will be trivial to get Comiczeal(or whatever) running on the Tablet. Comic's are a given on this thing, one way or another.

I prefer ComicReader Mobi. I have no qualms these days downloading the latest issue of Naruto/Ane Doki with my iPhone and reading it there (although I always reread One Piece again on the bigger screen). If the Tablet doesn't come with a comic/manga reader but allows iPhone apps to be scaled up I think it'll be good enough.

By the way, ComicBookLover for the Mac now has a companion iPhone app...

I never bothered looking at anything else, since the screen size makes it nothing more than a novelty by default. A big 10" screen is a whole nother story.

ComicReader Mobi has got a great UI for overcoming the screen size. it even has an option to autorotate to landscape for 'double pages'. It's worth checking out the free demo version.

To continue reading comics in single page potrait mode or double spread landscape mode on digital devices (since nothing like the Courier exists) that is the question :/
 
I listened to a bit of the TwiT podcast tonight... it kind of amazes me some of the crazy capabilities people come up with for this thing. That you'd connect this up to a PVR and transfer recordings to it? That you'd be able to use it as a second display? That you'd be able to get over-the-air HD on the tablet?

This is Apple. It took them until the 5th generation iPod Nano to put an FM TUNER into it.

I listened to it tonight myself. Leo is out of his mind to suggest that there won't be a web browser. That's the worst prediction he's ever made.

They're just speculating pie in the sky level at what could be in it to distinguish it as a device. Leo in particular tries to go crazy. At least it's different from all the people playing it safe because they don't want to be seen a wrong.

He not so much predicting as much as asking what would the craziest notions be?

He couldn't come up with a valid reason for it either, just that Steve will want to "keep it simple". Idiotic. Dwight Silverman tried to shut him down but he's not forceful enough, and Calacanus was too busy licking his own ass.

One of the worst episodes of TWIT ever.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, he again is acting like it's a foregone conclusion that the tablet will have an OLED screen. So now, when it doesn't, he'll act like that's a dealbreaker. Ugh.

If it can then It would be the perfect device for me. I want to read research papers and annotate slides in pdf format. Its a day one buy for me if it can do this.

Leo's an Apple fanboy. He's just been critical of Apple of late so he could look unbiased. That and his obsession with all things Google these days.
 
My predictions:

1. iBook
2. 10" Screen
3. LCD
4. 64GB standard.
5. Games will be demoed where multiple people are interacting with the tablet on a table, like a board game.

The rest is wild card time.

TWiT.tv is going to dedicating their entire broadcast day to the event. Leo Laporte is going to be there at the event along with other TWiT alumni and will be covering everything during and after the event. They start streaming around 9:00am PST. They said that if they find a live stream (audio or video) they will rebroadcast it on the TWiT stream.

According to a (now deleted) tweet by major German electronics retailer Media Markt, the Apple iPad will go on sale March 1st at a price of 499 Euros with contract with T-Mobile or 899 Euros without. In U.S. prices this would likely be around $500-$600 U.S. with contract and $999 without. We came to these numbers by comparing similarly priced Apple items sold in Euros and USD (Mac Mini: 549 Euros / $599 USD, MacBook 899 Euros / $999 USD).

The company, however, quickly deleted the tweet but not before it was retweeted a number of times. NetbookNews.de also picked up on the story and seems to believe that Media Markt would be in a position to know this information. The German site tells us that Media Markt is the biggest German electronics chain akin to Best Buy in the U.S., and has a dedicated Apple section.

Given Apple's secrecy, however, we're not convinced Apple would reveal such information to their retail partners ahead of the official announcement. That said, it's possible that mobile carriers such as T-Mobile have been briefed already due to the carrier agreements that must be put into place. Apple's Media event takes place Wednesday, January 27th.
