The Apple Tablet Thread Of It's Inevitable

Unless Apple decide to change their whole business model for the tablet, there is no way it's going to be cheap.

It will be a premium priced product at first to encourage tech-envy and make it a desirable item to own. It's all part of the Apple Hype Cycle, and it's worked flawlessly with the iPod and iPhone. They don't have the pitfalls of say Sony and the PS3, because development and support is assured because of the iTunes model across all platforms.

People will bitch, but others will buy. Then a year later they will drop the price, and people who were bitching will buy and push it into the mainstream.

Assuming they are going for the mainsream with this, rather than a niche product like the Air. Which from all the build-up and hype I'd say is almost certain.

then you're gonna be disappointed. look at what other tablets cost first and then figure out what this thing will potentially go for.

I don't think the tablet market is anything but niche and will never be as big as the laptop or smartphone market. most tablets attempt to be small pcs/organisers for business types who don't want to carry a laptop everywhere, and have been rendered almost irrelevant by smartphones.

the market is in a place where the only people who carry laptops are the ones who want to do real work or don't have a smartphone yet. hence no need for tablets in this arrangement unless its in place of something else.

if apple are really going after this traditional tablet audience - wow. it'll be as baffling to me as the decision to make the PSPGo. I just dont see any room in the market for a traditional tablet, even with the apple magic and price mark up.

it should compliment the laptop/ipod/iphone range and be positioned as an entertainment gadget and sit next to the ipod rather than a computer product and sit next to the macbook - and it can't do that if it costs that much.

oh well, not long now!

I understand your skepticism, but you sound just like some analysts talking about the theoretical iPhone before it was revealed (small market, only business user want 'em).

Yes, tablets have been a niche market for a long time but I fully expect this version to do for tablets what the iPhone did for consumer smartphones. which is to present a very friendly UI on a slick piece of hardware and tie directly into the itunes content delivery system.

it'll do very well as long as it's not more expensive than their laptop line, I bet.

Watching the next keynote. This was still before the App store. Steve was beginning to get thinner. :( iPhone got refined apps and the iPod touch got a little closer to parity. iTunes got movie rentals and the tv got rebooted. And then came the MacBook Air.

Overall, more filler and less energy.

What about it eating into the higher end netbook market? I am in the market for a netbook but am waiting to see what the tablet will be. If it's close enough to what I need (video out and a webcam), I may get it. (Unless it's priced at 1000$+, of course).

Everyone is saying it'll be "i" something, so I guess everybody has given up on it being an OS X device, as Apple seem to want to name everything with OS X 'Mac' something or other.

Yeah, like the "iMac"?

Regardless, it'll be running a flavor of OS X that will be closer to the iPhone than the computers. But OS X none-the-less.

What about the 'iMac'?

Edit: Heh. Note to self, don't post without a refresh.

haven't most of the latest Apple announcements been basically confirmed by leaks? i.e. we knew what most of the products looked like before the show if nothing more specific.

Have apple ever announced a retail price only to sell the product months later? for a german retailer to be tweeting about it now, kind of suggests it will be available to buy soon. why would retailers already have info about it if they weren't selling for 5 months?

as ready as I am for a gadget I don't REALLY need (sometimes you just want a new toy!) if this is that expensive to make it the cost equivalent of a macbook or a new iphone, hell no apple.

I'm looking at PSP, ipod touch prices at most.

although my craving for a new apple means I might be sweet talked into doing something stupid. but if its just gonna be like all the leaks so far, not interested.
:lol :lol :lol Thanks, I needed a good laugh this morning.

It still has Mac in the name.

That's why they dropped PowerBook and iBook a few years ago, they decided they wanted the OS X devices to have Mac in the name.

But it also has an "i" in the name. Whoa! Mind blown!

And for what it's worth, the iPhone and Tablet do run a version of OS X, albeit a highly optimized, mobile version.
