The best ending scene in a film?

Several of the greats - 2001, Paths of Glory, L'Eclisse, City Lights, A Clockwork Orange - have been mentioned, but for my money, there's nothing quite like the ending of Aguirre: The Wrath of God.

Se7en is definitely my favourite, but few others that I can think of including The Departed, Oldboy, Saw, Lock Stock, Pulp Fiction aaaand Donnie Darko.

Aww Monsters, Inc.

First thing that popped into my head. Such a great ending for a young kid. That, and the the peace the Grant seems to have when hes flying away in the copter, looking at the birds.

Also, I wish I could post that Fountain comic that has the troll faces in it. Literally the only one I like with that type if meme but it haz spoilers, :(

Fuck yeah! I was looking through this thread hoping someone would have posted this.

Titanic's ending is pretty much perfect, bringing multiple themes together visually; couldn't find a shot with the pan over the photos, but that adds to it a great deal. The final pan up to the dome - the 4th in the film, all important - is hugely powerful to me.

Lots of good stuff in this thread.

Oh yes. From the moment the music kicks in, it's just intense and heart-breaking all the way through.

Did it really? I consider it one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time.
I wouldn't say Gattaca got panned. It got mostly positive reviews. It's just mostly been forgotten, which is a travesty. It's one of my favorite films ever.

I have quite a few favorite endings, but one of my recent likes was Lost in Translation's. In a simple way of course

My vote also goes to the Godfather but OP took it ! :/

This is the very first thing that popped in my head too!

Dat montage. Wow.

Empire Strikes Back is also pretty classic.

The ending of Assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford left me shellshocked with tears in my eyes. Powerful stuff.

I liked The Dark Knight's ending, save for Gordon's monologue, which was really cheesy and ham-fisted.
Wait, if you didn't like the monologue, then what exactly did you like of the ending?

The sequence of Batman being relentlessly pursued by the police was very well done.

The monologue was just a bit hokey.

Endings that left an impression on me.

Se7en

Back to the Future.
What my young self thought about it:
To be continued?!...What a rip off.

Stand By Me
A show about kids that ends in a depressing/realistic way was something I don't think I ever experienced before I saw this

Les Diaboliques

Modern day audiences will guess the twist but that won't stop them from enjoying the ride.

Andrei Rublev

triumphant and bitter sweet.

The Fountain
The 25th Hour
Barton Fink
2001
Memento
A Clockwork Orange
A Serious Man

Edit: L'Eclisse, Aguirre, Diabolique, Andrei Rublev... I guess the second page is where we mention quality cinema that 99% of GAF will never have seen, my contribution is Rififi.

Hmm...tough. I think Saving Private Ryan's ending was quite moving and wrapped things up nicely.

-EDIT- Also 28 Weeks Later ended quite impressively even if it was just a cliffhanger.

You've gotta be fucking kidding me... Saving Private Ryan? That was the most tacky ass ending to a movie I've ever seen. American Flags waving in the wind, old fart crying... damn that shit sucked.
