The best looking games this generation so far

Life is Strange
From a technical perspective, LiS's graphics may not be all that impressive, but the game's art style perfectly and beautifully fits the game's tone and style.

Valiant Hearts
I feel like this game as a whole is very underrated and often overlooked, and it's beautiful hand drawn graphics are no exception to that.

Rise of the Tomb Raider
No explanation necessary.

Super Mario 3D World
The 8th world of this game in particular looks stunning, but I don't wanna post it cuz of spoilers.

I have to say it again:
Xenoblade X looks completely nuts if you consider that it is running on a WiiU.

I still can't believe that Xenox X's gigantic world (one of the biggest ever) is actually truelyone world which requires no loading.

once you get the
flight mode
jaws will drop regulary.

unbelievable

Damn that's gorgeous, how was the world though ? Was it empty?

Damn that's gorgeous, how was the world though ? Was it empty?

It's the single best open world ever developed in my opinion. It isn't vastly populated but it's not meant to be. Its an alien world full of monsters and awe inspiring views, the game is all about exploring and discovering the secrets of plant Mira. Game of the year 2015 for me.

Killzone. To me, still the best looking game out there to this day.

Uncharted 4
Battlefront
Battlefield 1
The Division
Shadow fall
Wild Hunt
Ryse
Rise of the TR
Forza Horizon 3
NBA2K
Quantum Break
Deus Ex Mankind Divided
Halo 2 Anniversary
The Order 1886
Driveclub
Gears 4
Alien Isolation
MGS5

Well this thread isn't best performing game of the generation so far.
But the frame rate never bothered me in Until Dawn anyway.
...but it is about the most technically impressive games, right? Frame-rate is part of that discussion.

Even when it's already 2 years old I still consider Killzone Shadow Fall to be the most impressive ps4 game, along with Uncharted 4.

Oh, God, that title. Fanboy wars and hyperbolic posts abound!
I've never been so glad to be wrong on GAF! After numerous similar threads eventually devolved into fanboy duel, I'm glad this thread is still rational and interesting.

The OP was initially referring to art style, but later clarified that "best looking" can be interpreted in any way by anyone.

Without question, Uncharted 4.

The best technically, the best art-style, the best lighting, the best animations, the best attention to detail, the best EVERYTHING!

I see a few posters have mentioned Batman Arkham Asylum. It's pretty good looking but the AA solution was HORRENDOUS.

I played it on PC and nothing, and I mean nothing, removed the jaggies.

Ori and Child of light art wise.

The Order still holds technical title thus far. Uncharted, Battlefront and BF1 are doing amazing things as well.

Damn that's gorgeous, how was the world though ? Was it empty?

Yes and no. The sheer amoumt of content is huge and there are lots of hidden places to find. Animals (Indigens) are everywhere and you are never too far from the next group.

However its still spaced out enough tbat areas have a huge sense of scale.

bloodborne-big.jpg

Bloodborne is ridiculously a good looking game... the atmosphere and the art direction is the absolute one of the best I've ever seen, BB2 would look stunning and mind blowing if it was ever made.

Bloodborne is my personal pick as well, despite how much I love Nintendo. Crazy how they jumped from Dark Souls 1 and 2 (2 games I consider to have really subpar visuals) to this. Absolutely stunning.

Only one city in the game, with scattered small groups of unimportant npcs at a few camps around the rest of the world. You go back to the city often, especially as it is where most of the quests are started, giving a bit of contrast between the activity of the city and the untamed wilderness of the overworld.

Strength: Lots of beautiful scenery. Accessible on foot, ground vehicle, and flying.

Weakness: Silent protagonist, leaving the story divided between and driven by the many other characters you can enlist, rather than 'you', reducing the story to a light to moderate tug to encourage you to explore new locations and scenery. Do not expect a populated world with characters to discover and interact with, or changes to and development of that world.

How empty it feels would probably depend on how much you enjoy exploring the environments, and whether the main city you go to + talking scenes for story-missions around the world is enough to satisfy you.

My top 5, a mix of technical and art-style:

Ori and the Blind Forest

Tearaway Unfolded

The Witness

Battlefield 1

Ori and the Blind Forest
Mario Kart 8
Ratchet and Clank
Uncharted 4
Gears of War 4
Killer Instinct
Driveclub
Battlefield 1

Those are probably my favourites so far.

Are there any good guides for this game yet? When I played it I didn't really have a clue what I was doing or where to go.

Uncharted 4, The Order, Until Dawn, Driveclub and The Division all look bonkers still.

I think Until Dawn has the best character models I've ever seen.

Bound really blew me away.
I love the way it looks on tv and it looks even better in VR. Same with Res Infinite (area X is so good!).

Other games that have a really apealing visual style to me are:
Mario 3D World
Yoshi's Wooly World
Wind Waker HD
Mario Kart 8
Ratchet & Clank
Journey
Alien Isolation
Capitan Todd: Treasure Tracker
Unravel
Tearaway Unfolded
Hyper Light Drifter

One of these games is not like the others....

seriously The Division looks like garbage even on PC 4K downsampled. The console versions barely even pass for current gen.

Defnitive answer imo is Driveclub. Even years after I sold my PS4, my much stronger PC has yet to show me a racing game that looks as good as Driveclub. Horizon 3 doesn't even come close (and runs like shit to boot)

Most games I thought of have already been mentioned, but I still think a few deserve repeat:

Project Zero Maiden of Black Water

Bayonetta 2
How? Both of these games look really dated in terms of rendering tech and asset quality.

Its definitely the least impressive out of the bunch, but still has gorgeous, atmospheric environments. Especially for an open world game.

Can't disagree more, Bayonetta 2 has some gorgeous art and there are moments where it simply looks stunning

Maiden of Blackwater also looks great with some of the best character models on Wii U and one of the most eerie environments ever put into a game.

There are very few games, let alone open world games, with the sheer asset density of the division. Let alone the straight up obsessive attention to little details., Note that video includes half of the details noticed by players. How anyone could look at the snow storms with dynamically lit particle effects and think it wouldn't pass for current gen is beyond me.

I mean art aside, those two games still aren't very technically impressive. Like the AA solutions have a lot of jaggies, character animation is really not where it should be, this is supposed to be fear and shock...

(seriously wtf is with so many Japanese games not giving faces good blendshapes, realtime wrinkling was a thing ages ago). Bayonneta 2 unfortunately can't maintain it's 60fps target when the engine is under load and the engine used seems like it had very few upgrades for modern standards. Like I really don't think either of these are highlightable. :/

It's too bad that "sheer asset density" doesn't make a bad looking game look good. Instead you see shades of shit most of the time like this

I should have known better criticizing a Ubisoft game in a thread Yves is posting in, but sorry dude the game looks as bad as it plays.

I mean it's a technical thread, you wanna highlight specifically what looks bad about it? Like is there something wrong with the volumetric particle effects? No, is the lighting system below par, absolutely no, is there a lack of attention to detail or lots of dead areas, (congrats on finding one of the emptiest looking spots btw, way to ignore the other three screens on this same page lol), no, I didn't even highlight how ridiculously detailed the interiors are, the scale of the buildings, the dynamic shaders for snow depending on TOD and weather. It's absolutely technical impressive in every sense of the word.

Seriously wish posts like this were moderated more often, because it's gamefaqs level fucking shitposting. Seriously. Sign up for that website if this is the level of discourse you prefer because I tried to have a discussion about, GASPPPPP, the technical specifics of a ubisoft game and used actual sources and facts instead of braindead phrasing like
looks like garbage
in a thread about game tech. >:(
